“The Art of Persuasion: Crafting an Effective Argument Essay”
A minimum of 8+ full pages typed,
Use MLA documentation style, and include a minimum of FIVE credible sources in your works cited. You should diversify your sources, so not ALL online. (Talk to actual people!)
Key Features of an Effective Argument Essay:
1) Contains the main parts of a classical argument: An effective essay will include these traditional elements:
a) Introduction- engage the reader, introduce the issue, state your position
b) Background and Preliminary Material- place your issue in a current context and provide any background information and/or definitions of key terms and concepts
c) Supporting Arguments- make a strong case for your position by developing your assertion(s)—this is usually the longest portion with a separate section for each line of reasoning
d) Addressing Counter-Arguments- you objectively summarize opposing arguments and address them—this clarifies the issue for readers; it also utilizes your ethos as being “fair minded.” Finally, you respond to these counter-arguments by pointing out their flaws or weaknesses or concede to their strengths.
e) Conclusion- here you place your argument into a larger context, and issue a call to action relative to your argument
(FYI, you do NOT have to put them in this order, think rhetorically. Maybe you want to present and address the counters BEFORE you support your argument. You are the author, so you decide the best structure for your argument.)
2) Offers excellent support: For each line of reasoning (the “because”), the writer provides adequate grounds in the form of facts, examples, statistics, testimony, or other supporting details. In addition, the writer uses effective appeals to the readers’ emotions, beliefs, or values.
3) Persona or tone: the writer establishes a knowledgeable, trustworthy, and credible persona by
treating opposing views fairly and respectfully and by building bridges between the writer and
audience to demonstrate common values or concerns.
4) Anticipates and addresses opposing views: the writer summarizes opposing views charitably and either refutes them or concedes to them.
5) Integrates and documents material from sources accurately: follows guidelines for using attributive tags and in-text citations. The works cited list is accurate and complete.
6) Shows evidence of careful editing and proofreading: writing should demonstrate careful editing with attention to stylistic choices, such as strategic use of punctuation and strong, active verbs. A final draft should also demonstrate close proofreading for errors in spelling, punctuation, documentation, and formatting. -

“Recommendation Report: Implementing a New Social Media Platform for the English Department at SCSU” Exploring the Power of Bing: A Comprehensive Guide to Microsoft’s Search Platform
Recommendation Report
For this assignment, you will consider what you have learned about how organizations use social media, and you will write a recommendation report, recommending that the English department at SCSU consider a new social media platform.
Right now, the English Department uses several platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and a blog. (A few years ago, the department tried a LinkedIn group, but it has been inactive for about 6 years.) There are a great many platforms to chose from (like Pinterest, TikTok, Snapchat, or even a podcast, among others).
The important thing, whatever your choice, is that you provide evidence that your recommendation is appropriate for the English Department. That evidence could include outside research about the platform (perhaps showing typical users of the platform fit the demographics of the English department), ENG Facebook analytics (available on Blackboard), information about “typical” department members, based on user personas (see the last few pages of the ENG Social Media Style Guide), or other sources.
So, for example, if I was going to recommend that the department start using Instagram (not an option for you, since the department already uses it), I might argue that it is an appropriate choice because 1) Instagram users are typically between 15 and 30 years old, like most SCSU students, information I have found in researching the platform; 2) SCSU has an active Instagram page, with almost 4000 followers, so there are likely to be many ENG majors already on the platform; and 3) looking at ENG FB analytics, the posts that get the most engagement are those with images, so an image-heavy platform like Instagram makes sense. Of course, I would include examples to back all of those things up (like pointing to a few specific ENG Facebook posts with high engagement due to their including images).
While there are many places online that will give you suggestions for how to write a recommendation report (and since this is a professional writing class, I would normally have you write a more formal report), it is probably easiest to think of this more as the kind of argument paper you probably wrote in ENG 110 or 112 (or whatever first-year writing course you might have taken at another school):
Start with an introduction, reminding the reader of what your purpose is and saying what you will be recommending.
Give a description of the platform you are recommending: how it works, and how businesses and organizations typically use it.
Give your reasons and evidence for the recommendation. Remember, this isn’t just “I use Tik Tok, and I really like it, so the department should use it.” Have some good reasons and solid evidence that will really show why it will work for the English Department. (If you want to argue that Tik Tokis popular among students at Southern, you need to be able to prove it, other than saying all of your friends use it.) Show an understanding of both the platform and an understanding of how the English Department uses social media and what it needs from a platform.
Describe how the department would use it, specifically. Discuss how it would meet the department’s goals (see the “Purpose and Goals” section of the Social Media Style Guide).
Give a few examples of posts (maybe a week’s worth) so the reader knows what it would look like. Don’t just give a general description; create actual posts, or find posts that already exist (maybe from another academic department) that do the things you say would work for ENG.
Wrap up with a conclusion.
A few final important details:
The report will probably be about 4-5 double-spaced pages long
Your audience for this report will be the chair of the English Department, and any colleagues she chooses to share it with. Do not assume that readers are familiar with your proposed platform, or that they have more than a general knowledge of social media. Give details that would be appropriate for a brand new user when describing the platform. -
Overcoming Fear and Achieving Success: An Analysis of Freire and Kohn’s Perspectives on Education
Reading Response Assignment: Week # 5
Step 1- Complete the reading assignment: Freire and Kohn
Step 2-Annotate the reading by Talking to the Text
Step 3-Please compose two paragraphs identifying Freire’s and Kohn’s main points in the first paragraph. The first sentence should address a common theme. The next six sentences should introduce each reading selection with its main points and titles. Finally, you will need to provide a sentence with a direct quotation, commentary, and parenthetical citation that validates the main point.
In the second paragraph, you have the option to only address one reading selection as it relates to you. However, you may choose to address how you made connections to all. Each paragraph should have at least one direct or indirect quotation from the reading to support your claims. Please use MLA format. In addition, the required length of each paragraph must be at least 8 sentences long.
Example:
Paragraph 1- example
Many people have a desire to graduate college one day; however, without the proper motivation, this desire is simply a dream. Johnathan Williams argues that people need to physically write their educational goals on paper and post them, so they can visually be reminded of their commitment to success, in his article, “I Need a Degree.” Williams pushes many of his friends to succeed in small goals because “small successes lead to greater self-esteem and more motivation” (32). Next, Rebecca Cox strongly believes that many irrational fears can adversely affect first-year college students’ success in college unless they have a fear-management strategy, in her article, “The Student Fear Factor.” According to Cox, many English students are simply overwhelmed by the volume of expectations and assignments and will say, “I’m not going to be able to make it”, when all they need to do is find a support network for the courses they have (20). For example, write two more sentences that relate to the two articles. Make sure to include content in your own words. As a result of success building strategies, many people have graduated from college, started businesses, and accomplished their goals.
Paragraph 2- example
The portion of William’s article where he described how he helped his best friend was compelling to me because it reminded me of the time when my God -Father helped me to overcome my fear of writing. In this portion of the article, Williams told his friend that not helping his best friend in life would be an eternal stain on his permanent record in Heaven (33). My God-father told me that I had to succeed because I represented him. He could write well, and he was determined to teach me the tenets of writing. I wanted to write well. I listened to everything my God-father shared with me, just like Williams’s best friend listened to him. I practiced day and night using the skills my mentor gave me. I am sure the best friend followed instructions too. In the end, I accomplished my goal of becoming a better writing much in the same measure of success as the best friend who graduated from college in the article. -
Title: Applying Toulmin’s Method to Analyze an Argument Claim
I’ve attached the PowerPoint to follow and the Assignment I submitted that I want to refer to.
After reading the PowerPoint presentation on Toulmin’s methods of analyzing the validity of an argument, I would like you to analyze a claim yourself. Choose ONE claim you have been working with (perhaps from your Exploratory Essay or from a discussion board post), or find one in a discussion board another student has been working on (You need to use a claim including the word “should.” For example, All elderly drivers SHOULD be required to pass yearly competency tests).
Next, Using the exact format you saw in the PowerPoint, you will apply the Toulmin scheme to your claim. Be sure to use all of the following components to the argument: claim, stated reason, warrant (unstated assumption), conditions of rebuttal, backing. Remember, you only need to complete a Toulmin analysis on one claim. -
Improving Readability and Clarity: Design Strategies for Non-Specialist Audiences What Causes Sleep? (Revised) Headings: – Introduction – The Role of Circadian Rhythms – The Importance of Sleep-Wake Home “The Importance of Sleep for Growth, Development, and Overall Health” Title: The Role of Sleep in Promoting Growth and Repair in Children and Teens
This week we’ve explored how professional and technical writers can use design, layout, and typography strategies to make documents easy to read and useful for their audience. For this week’s Concept Worksheet, you’ll apply these strategies to an existing text with the end goal of making it more readable, clear, and useful for a non-specialist audience. This worksheet is similar to the Audience Adaptation Assignment you completed in Week 3, but the focus in that assignment was on adapting the language for non-specialists. The focus here is entirely on strategies for layout, design, formatting, and typography. Using the understanding you’ve gained from Chapters 4.3-4.5 of our textbook, apply three or more of the following strategies to the text below: Headings Lists Figures Notices Tables Highlighting Margins, indentation, and alignment Fonts and color Last, write an explanation of at least 200 words explaining what changes you made to the text and how you think those changes might benefit a non-specialist audience. Your document should be 12pt, Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, and double spaced.
What Causes Sleep? There are two internal biological mechanisms that work together to regulate wakefulness and sleep referred to as circadian rhythms and sleep-wake homeostasis. Circadian rhythms direct a wide variety of body functions including wakefulness, core temperature, metabolism, and the release of hormones. They control the timing of sleep, causing a person to feel sleepy at night and creating a tendency to wake in the morning without an alarm. Circadian rhythms are based roughly on a 24-hour clock and use environmental cues, such as light and temperature to determine the time of day. Sleep-wake homeostasis keeps track of a person’s need for sleep. A pressure to sleep builds with every hour that a person is awake, reaching a peak in the evening when most people fall asleep. The homeostatic sleep drive also regulates sleep intensity, causing a person to sleep longer and more deeply after a period of sleep deprivation. Adenosine is linked to this drive for sleep. While awake, the level of adenosine in the brain continues to rise, with increased levels signaling a shift toward sleep. While sleeping, the body breaks down adenosine. When it gets dark, the body also releases a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin signals the body that it’s time to prepare for sleep and creates a feeling of drowsiness. The amount of melatonin in the bloodstream peaks as the evening wears on. A third hormone, cortisol, is released in the early morning hours and naturally prepares the body to wake up. Factors that influence a person’s sleep and wakefulness include medical conditions, medications, stress, sleep environment, and foods and fluids consumed, but the greatest influence is exposure to light. Specialized cells in the retina process light and provide messages to the brain to align the body clock with periods of day or night. Exposure to bright artificial light in the late evening can disrupt this process, making it hard to fall asleep. Examples of bright artificial light include the light from a TV screen, computer, or smartphone. Exposure to light can also make it difficult to return to sleep after being awakened. Night shift workers often have trouble falling asleep when they go to bed and may have trouble staying awake at work because their natural circadian rhythm and sleep-wake cycle are disrupted. Jet lag also disrupts circadian rhythms. When flying to a different time zone, a mismatch is created between a person’s internal clock and the actual time of day. The rhythm and timing of the body clock change with age. For example, teenagers fall asleep later at night than younger children and adults because melatonin is released and peaks later in the 24-hour cycle for teens. As a result, it’s natural for many teens to prefer later bedtimes at night and sleep later in the morning than adults. Individuals also need more sleep early in life, when they’re growing and developing. For example, newborns may sleep more than 16 hours a day, and preschool-aged children need to take naps. Young children tend to sleep more in the early evening, whereas older adults tend to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. Sleep Phases and Stages. When sleeping, individuals cycle through two phases of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep. A full sleep cycle takes 80 to 100 minutes to complete, and most people typically cycle through four to six cycles per night. It is common to wake up briefly between cycles. Restoration takes place mostly during slow wave, non-REM sleep, during which the body’s temperature, heart rate, and brain oxygen consumption decrease. Brain activity decreases, so this stage is also referred to as slow-wave sleep and is observed during sleep studies. Non-REM sleep has these three stages:
Stage 1: The transition between wakefulness and sleep. Stage 2: The initiation of the sleep phase. Stage 3: The deep sleep or slow-wave sleep stage is based on a pattern that appears during measurements of brain activity. Individuals spend the most amount of sleep time in this stage during the early part of the night. (Note that the previously considered 4th stage of non-REM sleep is now included within Stage 3). During REM sleep, a person’s heart rate and respiratory rate increase. Eyes twitch as they rapidly move back and forth, and the brain is active. Brain activity measured during REM sleep is similar to activity during waking hours. Dreaming occurs during REM sleep, and muscles normally become limp to prevent acting out one’s dreams. People typically experience more REM sleep as the night progresses. However, hot and cold environments can affect a person’s REM sleep because the body does not regulate temperature well during REM sleep. The patterns and types of sleep change as people mature. For example, newborns spend more time in REM sleep. The amount of slow-wave sleep peaks in early childhood and then drops sharply in the teenage years. Slow-wave sleep continues to decrease through adulthood, and older people may not have any slow-wave sleep at all. Why Is sleep important? Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times protects mental health and physical health. Lack of sleep affects daytime performance, quality of life, and safety. The way a person feels while awake depends on what happens while they are sleeping. During sleep, the body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain physical health. In children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development. Healthy Brain Function and Emotional Well-Being. Sleep helps the brain work properly. While sleeping, the brain is forming new pathways to help a person learn and remember information. Studies show that a good night’s sleep improves learning and problem-solving skills. Sleep also helps a person pay attention, make decisions, and be creative. Conversely, sleep deficiency alters activity in some parts of the brain, causing difficulty in making decisions, solving problems, controlling emotions and behavior, and coping with change. Sleep deficiency has also been linked to depression, suicide, and risk-taking behavior. Physical Health. Sleep also plays an important role in physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repairing the heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Sleep helps maintain a healthy balance of the hormones that cause hunger (ghrelin) or a feeling of fullness (leptin). When a person doesn’t get enough sleep, the level of ghrelin increases and the level of leptin decreases, causing a person to feel hungry when sleep deprived. The way the body responds to insulin is also affected, causing increased blood sugar. Sleep supports healthy growth and development. Deep sleep triggers the body to release hormones that promote normal growth in children and teens. These hormones also boost muscle mass and help repair cells and tissues. -Text adapted from Nursing Fundamentals under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, which allows remixing, transforming, and building upon the original. Write a short essay (3-4 full typed double-spaced pages) with separate paragraphs of intro, body, and closure. To prepare, select TWO of the readings from the list that you may be able to relate to from your past experiences. If you would like to incorporate examples from the novel as well to contribute to points, you may do so.
Prompt:
This prompt asks you to do two different things: 1) discuss the two readings AND 2) contribute your own thick description and specifics of your connection. Remember this is ONE cohesive essay, though. . .not separate discussions.
Discuss how the two authors present effective details in their writing that deliver vivid pictures (profiles–a specific term discussed soon) of the “places” and/or “conditions” that affect the character(s) (or Orwell, too, if you are also including the novel)—highlighting and analyzing the details that stand out to make their stories interesting and convey a dominant impression (!main point!=X evidence + why analysis)
Formulate a strong thesis in your intro about what the most effective kinds of details are in conveying a message/dominant impression (intro identifies the pieces used, too, by author and title).
Give a body paragraph for each reading that you will discuss that has a topic sentence that points back to the thesis and guides the paragraph and its content,
Provide integrated examples (modeled earlier in the syllabus), specific examples, and clear references to the pieces you are discussing (so you can quote, paraphrase, summarize carefully)
AND offer at lease one paragraph of personal insight/comments/evaluation—this is not merely “I think/believe or in my opinion” but a contribution of your own experiences that will clearly communicate to the reader a place/condition that one–or both–readings have “triggered”/made you remember. Use specific detail (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch. . .dialogue, etc.)
Close the essay with reminders to readers about what effective writing helps readers “take-away” (i.e. message/lesson, etc.)
Document (give citations) correctly as you refer to the authors by names and page numbers–see examples online or in the handbook
Requirements: 3-4 Full Pages Times New Roman Size 12 Font Double-Spaced APA Format Excluding the Title and Reference Pages
