1. In Sherman Alexie’s “What You Pawn I Will Redeem,” alcohol is a significant obstacle for Jackson Jackson. His drinking habits waste his money, impair his judgment, and derail his efforts to reclaim his grandmother’s regalia. Every time he drinks, he falls further from his goal, showing how alcohol can trap someone in a cycle of poverty and poor decisions. In real life, I’ve seen alcohol wreak similar havoc. It can lead to health issues, job loss, and broken relationships. People get so caught up in drinking that they neglect important parts of their lives, just like Jackson does.
2. Despite his flaws, Jackson Jackson has admirable qualities. He’s persistent, kind, and funny. He tries to buy back his grandmother’s regalia with his money, showing his sense of fairness. He’s also generous, often sharing what little he has with others, like when he buys drinks for everyone at the bar. While his lack of self-control and tendency to waste money can be frustrating, his good intentions and kind heart make him relatable and likable.

Title: My Research Journey: Exploring the Question of [insert topic]
Part I: Research Narrative (500+ words – 2 pages)
The first section of the assignment will be a first-person narrative that tells the story of your research journey. It will let the reader know how your process began and progressed. I’m interested here in the chronological path of your process. Use the following questions as starting points or guides to tell your story:
Why did this question interest you? Why does it deserve to be answered?
How did you begin your research? What did you do next? Why?
What sources did you uncover?
What did you agree or disagree with?
How did the sources affect your thinking?
How do the sources relate to each other?
The first section of your assignment could be seen as a mini-version of a longer exploratory essay. As you can imagine, you can be drafting this section throughout the process.
Part II: Annotated Bibliography (minimum of 4 entries); at least two (2) sources should be accessed using the HCCS library databases.
An annotated bibliography is like an expanded Works Cited (MLA) page where your reader sees not only the formal citation but also a paragraph containing a summary and explanation of each source. You will list your sources alphabetically according to MLA citation style (Links to an external site.) as you would in a Works Cited page. Each formal citation will be followed by a short paragraph containing:
A description and summary of the work (100-150 words). Take a few sentences to summarize the source and give the reader the main point of the source (or thesis, if appropriate) and a general sense of the whole work. Observe the conventions of summary in your annotations (author tags, present tense verbs, objectivity).
Then, include an indication of the credibility, authority, or bias of the source (2 sentences). Some ways you can demonstrate credibility are by using the CRAAP Test (Links to an external site.), listing how you found the source (such as via the HCC library databases), saying the source comes from a respected publication (such as The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, or a peer-reviewed scholarly journal), or noting the author has credentials relevant to the source.
A statement of how the source might fit into an argument, that is, how it might be useful for your own researched argument.
Your sources here will reflect how your research develops. There is no expectation that these sources are the ones that will appear in the final paper or that they will be “balanced,” that is, so many “for” or “against” an issue. In fact, it is unlikely that all the sources will appear in the final essay. Also, resist the impulse to select only those sources that support any opinions or judgments you may already have about your topic. Reserve judgment, and see where the research leads you.
NOTE: Your sources must be from the last decade. Sources that are more than ten (10) years old will not count towards your assignment. Also, you may not use Wikis, Blogs, Personal Websites and ProCon.org as cited sources. -

“Drafting an Engaging Profile: Exploring a Day in the Life of a Jimmy Johns Driver”
Please review the Features of the Form of a profile, on page 111 in your textbook. You will use this resource to help you compose the first draft of your profile essay. By the end of this week and before 8 a.m. (Central Time) on Monday, you will submit your draft to the group Discussion Board so that others can provide you with feedback and help you make your essay stronger.
Content
This first draft should be at least 500 words long. Try to meet the requirements for the final draft as best as you can and submit an essay that you feel is as close to finished as possible so that the feedback you receive is more likely to be useful. However, do not be overly concerned with issues related to proofreading and editing at this point; you will have the opportunity to address these as you revise.
Be sure your primary focus is on just one day spent with the subject of your profile. You don’t have to organize this chronologically, from the start of the shift to the end. You can certainly do that, but you can also organize it around the questions you are seeking an answer to.
Be sure to let us see and hear the subject of your profile. We should feel as if we are in your shoes observing and interacting with the subject of your profile, so don’t hesitate to put yourself in the profile too, interacting with the subject of your profile.
Be sure to take time to craft an engaging introduction, one that draws the reader in by promising that the reader will discover something interesting about the job you’re profiling. Look on page 564 of our text for ideas about the different types of leads you could use for this essay. Leads are techniques for introducing this or any future essay.
Here is an introduction to a profile about our old friend, Larry, the Jimmy Johns driver, which I hope will give you some idea of what an effective introduction needs to have. The first two paragraphs are the introduction and then I move into the first paragraph of the body of the profile:
“So tell me the truth,” I said to Larry as we sat in a booth at the Jimmy Johns franchise off Blair High Road in Omaha, Nebraska, waiting for his first delivery of the day to be ready, “have you ever helped yourself to someone’s cookie or pickle, hoping they wouldn’t notice?” Larry, nearly 30-years-old with an oversized blonde mustache, laughed and assured me he had never in his five years of working as a Jimmy Johns driver stolen someone’s cookie or pickle. “But even if I had, I’m sure as shit not going to admit it on the record,” he added with another laugh, twisting the ends of his mustache, a habit of his, I discovered, whenever he was nervous.
I’m happy to report that during our day together, Larry was willing to share other secrets about being a Jimmy Johns driver—such as how to improve the chances of getting a bigger tip or ending up with a free sandwich by the end of the day. In the end, what I learned about earning a living as a Jimmy Johns driver was what I expected for the most part—that the worst part is dealing with traffic all day and getting lost at times and that the best part is getting to be on your own for most of the day. But what I didn’t expect to discover is just how rewarding the job can be at times.
As I anticipated, one of the worst parts of the job delivering for Jimmy Johns is being stuck in traffic for most of the day. “That’s why I make sure to start my day with a full tank,” explained Larry as we sat at yet another red light . . . -
Title: The Power of Forgiveness in “The Scarlet Ibis” In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the theme of forgiveness is evident throughout the narrative. The story follows the relationship between two brothers, the
Select one of those stories and explore what you identify as the theme of that story with the evidence and textual support that leads you to that conclusion. While there may be more than one theme per story, you only need to explore one here.
Keep in mind that theme is more than a subject, so the theme is NOT going to be something generic like “Love” or “Greed.” Theme is the message of the story. Theme extends beyond the characters of a story and often relays a universal message that can be easily understood by the audience. Refer to your assigned reading from the textbook covering theme, if necessary. Remember, as indicated in this week’s lecture, that whatever you identify as the theme must be supported in the story. Therefore, be sure to use textual evidence to show how the story supports your conclusion of what you identify as a theme from your selected story.
There can be multiple themes per story, and each person is going to read the story differently based on personal experiences. The important thing is that you can find points of the story to support your answer and nothing in the story conflicts with your identified theme.
So, select your story, identify a theme, and be specific in laying out the support. -

Do not try to submit separately.
This essay needs a minimum of three sources: Two sources must be used for your side of the argument, and one source is needed for the opposition side of the argument. Incorporate at least one of them as a paraphrase. All must appear in the body of the paper with a proper in-text citation and a works cited entry on the last page.

“Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword – A Persuasive Essay on its Impact as Friend or Foe”
Writing Assignment
Write a multi-paragraph essay that takes a side to Kara Woodridge’s blog article, “Social Media: Friend or Foe?” For this writing assignment, your response should be persuasive, thoughtful, and detailed, showing various points that support the same topic. Logical evidence that backs up your opinion should be used throughout. Your essay should clearly explain your view on whether or not social media is a friend or foe and why you feel this way.
The first paragraph will offer an interesting introduction to the social media topic and your take on it. The following three paragraphs need to include: the main points that develop your assertions, evidence to support them, and an analysis explaining how the evidence supports the main point.
Each paragraph should have a topic sentence that clearly states your point and details to support/prove this point. You should have transitions between paragraphs that show why each point appears in this order. At the end of your last paragraph, you should include a concluding remark that gives a final interesting thought on your topic.
A grading rubric will help you develop your paper. Your essay will be graded using five separate categories: Purpose, Thesis Statement, Supporting Ideas, Paragraph Development, Grammar & Punctuation, and MLA format.
