  • “Revising for a Higher Grade: Improving a Presentation on Narrative Text Analysis” “Exploring the Power of Persuasion: An Analysis of Effective Presentations”

I had an order completed on this site a few weeks ago by someone, and received a grade of 43/50. I’ve attached the instructions I gave that person, and the presentation he created for me. Professor has given feedback to improve the grade. This is what he said :
I like the point that you made about limited perspective! Particularly in narratives that revolve around young people coming of age, limiting the perspective from which the story is told immerses the reader in the consciousness of the protagonists’ emerging sense of right and wrong, maturation, uneasy relationship to the adult world, etc. Here, of course, the limited perspective works to heighten the impact of the revelation of Harry’s special history.
It’s clear that your are passionate about this text and its portrayal of friendship in the face of overwhelming obstacles. I do think the presentation would have benefited from the model of critical apprecation that I discussed in the video. The more one is emotionally invested in a text, the more important it is to be willing to look at the text objectively – including taking into account its potential shortcomings. Perhaps because of your change in focus partway through this unit, I wasn’t able to give this feedback earlier.
I would also encourage you to think about how to ensure that you are consistently drawing the audience’s attention to specific scenes, passages, etc in your analysis. While I can tell that you are a keen reader of the books, the presentation actually doesn’t highlight or do deep dives into particular moments that might illustrate your broader points (e.g., the point about limited perspective). Note how holding up a particular paragraph or set of paragraphs might have lent further substance to your analysis in this regard.
Thank you for taking these points into consideration! I think you might consider revising this presentation for a potentially higher grade at the end of the semester, too.
The presentation the person made for me that received the 43/50 grade has been attached.
These were the original instructions I gave the person who made the presentation. Please be sure to watch the video by the professor.
Create a Google Slide presentation on a narrative text of your choice. It could be another text, or even a novel, film, or TV show that you enjoy. However, your presentation should include the following:
-Name and author of the work
    -A particular investigative angle
-2 slides minimum on summary (paraphrase!) and cultural, historical, or biographical context.
-3-4 slides of analysis of 2-3 elements (setting? character? POV?), with specific examples from specific moments (can include video clips, highlighted parts of text, etc).
-1 slide on your personal reflections (why is this text meaningful to you personally? Be creative in your explanation!)
    -Works cited page.
-As this is a research based presentation, you should rely on 3-4 sources, including the actual text.
-EITHER voiceover narration (7-10 mins) OR speaker notes that provide a detailed guide to the content of each slide. NOTE the difference between speaker notes and slide content: slide content should be bullet point based and visually friendly; speaker notes should include what you would say if you were explaining the slide in class. The speaker notes should be in complete sentences and paragraphs, unlike slide content.
    NOTES
To fill in speaker notes, you’ll need to write your guide to the slide in the white textbox below the slide.
Your analysis should focus on elements like character, POV, and setting. If you are focusing on a TV show or movie, I would avoid getting sidetracked into discussion of cinematography or acting.
    Grading breakdown:
60 points: slide content (is it informative? Efficient? Visually friendly? Well-formatted? Prioritizing interpretation over information? Hewing to assignment requirements? Well-researched?)
40 points: speaker notes OR voice over
Extra credit for quality/polish of presentation, creativity.
I encourage you to also take a look at the examples of previous students’ presentations as well for inspiration:

This LAST video I’ve added a link to below has an example of a presentation done by the professor himself, so you can see what he is expecting, what kind of analysis question you can use, etc. To join, use the nickname “Damanpreet” please. It has to be Damanpreet

  • “The Power of Popular Culture: Examining its Influence on the Progress of Social Movements”

You are to take any social movement or idea, and illustrate how Popular Culture has influenced its progress (for better or for worse), and continues to do so.  A social movement is a belief put into action. There’s also a list of common social movements at the bottom of this doc. First, your thesis must be an original and specific argument on how pop culture affected the movement. For example, “The gay rights movement benefited more from 90’s-00’s television sitcoms’ attempts to normalize it than from more subversive and underground movements.” What this means is, you PROBABLY WON’T HAVE YOUR THESIS UNTIL YOU’VE DONE SOME REAL RESEARCH! Look at the key moments in each movement. Other than (obviously) organization, the most important thing I am looking to see here is historical reach.

  • “Exploring Subcultures: A Prewriting Exercise”

    FIRST STEP: CHOOSING A TOPIC
This semester we’ve explored a number of subcultures (or unique cultures) that resist what might be called the dominant or main-stream culture in America.  Your task for your final essay is to choose a subculture (or unique culture) and examine its characteristics, shared mind-sets, values and how it may resist the dominant culture.   For this essay, you should consider a subculture that interests you, or perhaps one you are part of.  Here’s a list of subcultures related to some of our readings:
    Pow Wow culture
    or
    AIM  (The American Indian Movement)
    PREWRITE ASSIGNMENT:
Below are a series of questions.  Take your time and write a paragraph or more about each.  The idea is to get thoughts down on paper. Do your best to allow your writing to flow without interruption.  Some of the questions you may not yet be able to answer untilyou investigate further; on those do your best to theorize or “think-out-loud” about possible answers.
    1.  What subclultre did you choose to write about?  Discuss what drew you to the topic and why you have chosen it. Try and be as detailed as possible.  Describe elements or aspects of the subculture that interests you.  (1-2 pages)
    2. What values unite the culture? (1 paragraph)
    3. What are some of its secret rules?  If you don’t know yet, do you have any suspicions? (1 paragraph)
    4. What aspects of the subculture resist main-stream ideas? (1 paragraph)
    5. Is the culture political?  Gendered?  (1 paragraph)
    6. Does it have a seperate lingo that defines some of it’s values? (1 paragraph)
    7. Is there a shared mind-set? (1 paragraph)
    7.  What outside sources might help you?  (eg. Psychological profiles, history of the group, interviews) (1 paragraph)
    8.  What are possible arguments you can make about the subculture  (Skaters comprise a rebellious and dedicated faction of   enthusiasts who span all age groups)? (1 paragraph)

  • “Combining Writing Modes: A Global Revision” “Preserving Your Originality: The Importance of a Creative Mindset”

    Instructions
This longer essay should draw on all the skills employed in previous essays. Your argument will be supported by personal reflection, descriptive narration, stylistic and/or formal innovation, close reading/analysis of a primary source, and integration of relevant secondary sources. In other words, I am asking you to combine the various writing modes that are usually associated with composition classes.
You should think of this essay as a global revision. You are required to do more than polish and correct paper three. Paper 4 will be significantly different even though it must be recognizable as a revision. As you add more source materials, you will need to rewrite sections for coherence. You may end up completely reorganizing all the material you keep.
    Some options:
You may keep the original pop culture source but change the argument.
You may retain your social issue and/or your personal component but work with different
    sources.
You may add additional primary sources that will also require a shift in your argument so that your reader is prepared for a larger argument from the outset. (I do not recommend tacking new material onto the end.)
All sources should be documented in MLA format.
This 6-7 pp. essay should allow me to assess your ability to combine close reading of a primary source, supporting evidence from personal experience as well as from at least two different kinds of secondary sources. You should have 4-5 sources overall.
    Elaboration on content
You may choose your own topic so long as you cover all of the technical and formal              elements listed above.
You may find additional inspiration in the assigned essays we will read over the next three weeks.
You will be allowed to use one of the assigned sources to serve as a primary or a secondary source.
Do not use more than one of the assigned texts because I do want to see you conducting research, finding what you need rather than simply using the materials that I’ve found for you. You are not required to use any of the assigned readings.
It is possible for someone who wrote on a television episode to choose a different episode from the same program for the new essay. Much may depend on your ability to find fresh angles in order to add more content to the longer essay. If you don’t think you can say anything new about your primary source, then, you may be shifting the focus to different episodes so long as you are still working with some of the previous content, which might be related to the social issue. Similarly, you might use different songs off the same album. Or you might use an adaptation of the same story. (For example, if a graphic novel was adapted for television, you might decide to compare/contrast specific issues with specific episodes.)
    Elaboration on source-type and documentation
I want to see at least three different types of sources being documented on your Work Cited page. Note that you are required to use 4-5 overall.
One will be the required primary (probably the one you used in essay three), then, you will have two other secondary sources that require you to consult and follow MLA guidelines provided via Canvas links. I specify two here, because you need to demonstrate an ability to document two different types of secondary sources. (If you choose an assigned essay from the textbook, you could find another source via a library database. An essay in an anthology and an essay in a database require different information in the final citation.)
The fourth and possibly the fifth source can be either primary or secondary. The primary source is the one you are analyzing (performing the original close reading of). The secondaries will be about the primary, about similar primaries, possibly in the same genre, and/or about the social issue/controversy you are using to connect your essay.
You need to maintain control over the essay, despite the number of sources. I recommend that you use your personal (reflective, descriptive) component to help you to maintain your originality.

  • Exploring the Role of Symbolism and Point of View in Building the Theme of Cultural Identity in Bless Me, Ultima

Analyze two literary elements in Bless Me, Ultima. Take a careful look at how Anaya builds a theme throughout his novel with the use of two literary elements.
Here is a list of literary elements: plot, character, point of view, setting, diction, imagery such as metaphor or simile, symbolism, and style. Be aware that if you take on plot you do not want to summarize the plot of the book, but rather analyze how the plot or sequence of events builds a specific theme.
In addition to using the novel, please locate two critical literary articles from the library’s database system to support your ideas. Databases that are specifically helpful for literary analysis include Jstor, Literature Criticism Online, and Literature Resource Center.

    Revise Article Analysis (Essay One)
Your first option is to substantially revise your Article Analysis Essay (Essay One). These revisions must go beyond merely fixing formatting, grammatical, and/or organizational issues we identified in your earlier versions. In addition to addressing those issues, you will also generate a strong thesis statement about your article, that includes a call to action, and uses new evidence from an additional article and from Capital to support your analysis.
For example, if your Article Analysis posited that
“the housing crisis in the Bay Area demonstrates the inherent contradictions between use-value and exchange value in the commodity form”
then your revised, argumentative thesis might argue something like
“the housing crisis in the Bay Area demonstrates the inherent contradictions between use-value and exchange value in the commodity form, and demonstrates that working people and tenants must “put their heads together… and compel the passing of a law” (Marx 416) that establishes rent control, just like tenant organizers did in the City of Pasadena (Zahra).”
In this example, you’re moving beyond a theoretical analysis of the issue you researched and using new evidence from new research (for this example I used this article) and new evidence from Capital to support your call to action (passing rent control).
    Guidelines for Option One
Generate a 1500 word revision of your Article Analysis (Essay 1) or a 1750 word revision of your Film Analysis (Essay 2).
Your new draft must have an argumentative thesis.
Option One requires a call to action: What do we do to address the issues you uncover in your Article Analysis?
Option Two requires an argument for the efficacy/inefficacy of the film’s portrayal of Marx’s concepts. How well does the film depict these concepts? Why? What problems arise from the film’s depiction?
In addition to evidence from your earlier draft, your new thesis must be supported by at least two new pieces of evidence from the film/article and at least two new concepts from Capital (four new pieces of evidence, total).
This essay should follow MLA formatting guidelines, and include in-text citations and a Works Cited page.

Exploring the Purpose, Strengths, and Limitations of Academic Writing” “Promoting Work-Life Balance: Strategies for Increased Productivity and Employee Satisfaction” “The Evolution of Work-Life Balance: A Symbiotic Relationship between Employers and Employees”

As a student, you are most likely familiar with 5-paragraph essays, and you may have wondered, “Why aren’t we required to write a 5-paragraph essay?”
Likely, you have learned about and written a 5-paragraph essay, also known as an academic essay. You may have done this in high school or in previous educational experiences. Academic essays usually include a formal thesis statement, an introduction, at least 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
The academic essay genre is often used by faculty members to assess a student’s ability to find, explain, and draw conclusions using credible evidence, sometimes about debatable issues. However, the genre has some limitations. People don’t generally communicate with each other this way outside of school. Nevertheless, depending on your future coursework, you may be expected to write in this form, so it’s important for you to be familiar with an academic essay.
This week we will explore this genre’s structure, conventions, strengths, and limitations.
There are 3 parts to the discussion this week. Complete all 3 parts and submit them by Thursday.
    Part 1: Resource
Read the Work/Life Imbalance Sample Paper prior to responding to the discussion questions. Use this resource as a review of academic essay structure and thesis. Additionally, review the following 2 optional resources, as needed, during your writing practice: Essay Structure and Thesis Writing.
    Part 2: Response
Respond to the following questions using information from the resource in Part 1:
    * What is the purpose of writing in academic form? Who is the intended audience?
    * Have you used academic writing? How does the Work/Life Imbalance Sample Paper compare to past essays you have written or read?
    * What are the strengths of a 5-paragraph essay? What are its limitations?
    * How does this genre compare to other forms of writing in your everyday life?
    Part 3: Resource Credit
Practice giving credit (i.e., citation) to the resource you selected in Part 1 and used for your response in Part 2. Giving proper credit to your sources builds your credibility with your audience. Don’t worry about perfection. If you make a mistake, your faculty member can help, so please let your faculty member know if you have any questions.
Include the following in your response using APA format for the resource you selected:
    * In-text citations:
    * Credit the source within your response. For example, a parenthetical citation format would appear as: (Adams, 2016, p. 23)
    * Tip: To create in-text citations, you can use a citation generator, such as the Reference & Citation Generator in the Center for Writing Excellence, to cite the article in your response.
    * A reference (i.e., the resource’s full information):
    * Place it at the end of your response in the references section.
    * Tip: To create references, you can consult the References page on the APA Style website for assistance.
Read the Work/Life Imbalance Sample Paper prior to responding to the discussion questions. Use this resource as a review of academic essay structure and thesis.

    Work/Life Imbalance

    Dr. Melina Fords Work/Life Imbalance
Coordinating supervision and care for young children is a common challenge faced by many working parents. It is extremely rare for school and business schedules to be perfectly aligned, and there is a wide range of unexpected events that place additional stress and frustration on modern families. Forexample, sudden illnesses, doctor’s appointments, and poorly communicated early dismissals all contribute to the rushed scramble to arrange childcare that is familiar to many parents of young children. Circumstances such as these are unfortunate for both companies and their employees. These types of situationsforce employees to make some tough decisions that could ultimately affect not only their job performance, but also their overall happiness in their work environment. However, there are solutions to this imbalance. Companies must adapt and provideadequate family leave, allow work-at-home days for applicable positions, and encourage the use of all vacation time and sick time as needed. Not only is this good for their human response, but these practices may actually increase productivity.
    Adequate Family Leave
One way companies can ensure productivity and happiness in workers is by providing adequate leave time for both parents following the birth of a child. Schulte (2014) indicates that there is a connection between an employee’s work-life balance. The problem is that most companies fail to see this link. Mothers need time to heal, rest, and adjust to the schedule and needs of a new baby. Newborns can sometimes have problems, such as jaundice, feeding issues, or sleeping difficulties. New parents should be able to take care of these issues before the child goes into some kind of daycare and companies need to be more responsive to these needs. If new parents have time to spend with their baby, they will not be so anxious, tired, or unsettled when they return to work. For instance, the Patagonia Companyallows new parents a two-month parental leave (Schulte, 2014). This way, parents can come back to work ready to focus on their jobs again.
    Work at Home Days
Workers’ happiness and productivity can also be increased by adding one work-at-home day to weekly schedules, if it fits with the position. A study by Daipuria and Kakar (2013) showed that a “compressed work week and work from home options also find favor amongst the respondents which give clear indication to the organization to remodel their work assignments to suit mutual requirements” (p. 51). Participants in the modified work environment find the flexibility in their schedules to be mutually beneficial for them and the companies for whom they work. While at first glance it may seem like an impossible task to create such an accommodating work arrangement, there are a lot of ways this can work for a company and its employees. Remote access via computer can make employees available anytime. Additionally, employees can participate in meetings via Skype®, share documents, and send emails. The modified work schedule also makes it possible for employees to work outside of a traditional eight-hour workday as needed. Daipuria and Kakar (2013) concluded that a flexible work schedule is likely to “improve the work-life balance of the employee especially if they are working parents” (p. 51). So even if a company cannot spare someone for a whole day every week, this plan might be available as needed occasionally for the employee.
    Vacation and Sick Time
Finally, companies should encourage the use of all yearly vacation time, as well as sick time, when needed. It is possible that a situation may arise that an employee just cannot avoid. Sometimes parents are forced to make a decision between their sick child and their job. Sick days mean tending to a sick child at home. A workplace culture that frowns on people who stay home when they or their child cannot be at school or is sick only harms everyone working. It encourages people to lie or even sometimes inappropriately bring the child to work with them. Similarly, employees should not have to worry about vacation days which they need at unusual times to cover days when schools are closed as well as to take vacations. Allowing people to use these days as “personal days” for whatever reason creates a more honest workplace and more productive workforce when employees are at work. Krasulja, Blagojevic, and Radojevic (2015) have shown that organizations that offer work-life balance programs have happier employees who stay longer.
    The Business Angle
Alternatively, some may argue that it is not a company’s responsibility to offer programming that impacts the lives of employees outside the office. While a company certainly mustfocus upon shareholders and profits, they also have responsibilities to their employees and the communities in whichthey reside. The lens of history lands on the side of progress in the United States, and the relationship between company and employee is ever evolving. Where in the past there were exploitative practices, such as child labor, or no rules on hours worked, the culture has shifted for a reason. There is a symbiosis between employers and employees, and protecting this relationship and maintaining its healthiness, provides a boon for all.
    Conclusion
It is hard to imagine that working parents are productive or focused when they are forced to leave a sick, young child at home alone or in someone else’s care. Employers should create improved working conditions by implementing programs that take into consideration work and life, bridging the gap between the two seemingly different environments, without compromising productivity (and even increasing employee satisfaction). Work-life balance programs that create more benefits, like family leave, work from home, and personal leave days, will give employees more flexibility in scheduling approved time off which establishes a more family-friendly work environment.
