  • “Exploring the Role of Social Media in Homeland Security” Article: Alexander, David. “Social Media in Disaster Risk Reduction and Crisis Management.” Science & Engineering Ethics, vol. 20, no. 3, Sept. 2014

    Entering the Conversation
Due Date: Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. PST
    Word limit: N/A
    Points: 20
Responses: Respond to two classmates by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. PST.
Purpose: This discussion aims to begin your engagement with class readings. As you may have already seen, the ENG 240 Library Guide contains selected articles on every undergraduate major offered at National University. This assignment will help you find one (or more) primary articles as starting points for your final paper. At this point, you likely will not know what your paper’s primary claim will be; this activity will help you generate ideas and practice active reading strategies.
    Task:
Go to the ENG 240 Library Guide and find the tab that corresponds to your major. If you are a general studies major, you may choose any subject that interests you. If you are in Education, you may choose either the readings in education or the subject matter you intend to teach (e.g., if you plan to teach history, you may choose the readings in history instead of education if you like.)
Read three or more of the articles in the section.
After you read at least three articles, consider which article you felt like responding to the most.
In your chosen article, highlight passages in the article to which you wanted to respond.
Create a new Microsoft word document.
Note the subject of your paper (your major) and the title of the article you chose on the document.
Copy and paste three quotes from the article onto the new document.
Under each copied quote, respond briefly to each selection with your thoughts or questions about each quote.
Create a new discussion thread below.
Copy and paste your work from your word document to the new discussion thread.
Respond to two classmates’ posts by Sunday. Try to respond to classmates who have the same major if possible.
    Criteria for Success:
An example might look like this:
(Note, I use an example not in our ENG 240 readings. It is just an example, so do not worry that you haven’t read this article.)
Article: Steven Johnson, “Why Games are Good for You” – PDF Document (186 KB)
Successful posts will choose engaging quotes and interact with them by writing thoughtful responses that engage in the argument made in the paper, agreeing with, disagreeing with, or qualifying points made in the original article. Responses may ask thoughtful questions or suggest gaps that should be discussed in the argument.

  • Evaluating and Advancing the SMCCD Sustainability Program “Sustainability at SMCCD: Evaluating Our Progress and Taking Action for a Greener Future” Thesis Statement: While SMCCD has made significant efforts towards sustainability, there is still room for improvement in terms of reducing our carbon footprint and

We have been reading The Story of More by Hope Jahren, a book that outlines the consequences of industrialization and consumerism and urges us to write and enact a “story of less” in our personal and public lives. In our third and final unit, you will further investigate one of the San Mateo Community College District’s sustainability programs, analyze and evaluate different sources on your topic, and write a paper explaining and evaluating this program and giving advice about what additional action is needed and why. You’ll also create a “One-Pager” to summarize your work. Parts of Your Project Part 1: In preparation for parts 1 and 2, write an annotated bibliography explaining the relevance of 3 sources about your topic. One of your sources should be a relevant page from the SMCCD Sustainability website (https://sites.google.com/my.smccd.edu/smcccdsustainability/home?authuser=0), and the other two should be sources that you find through the CSM Library. (https://collegeofsanmateo.edu/library/) Part 2: In a well-developed and clearly organized essay, explain and evaluate built environment sustainability programs, based on their website (https://sites.google.com/my.smccd.edu/smcccdsustainability/about/meet-the-team?authuser=0) You will introduce the program, describe the problem(s) it aims to solve, evaluate its real and/or potential effectiveness, and suggest further steps you think are necessary for an effective program. Part 3: Create a “one-pager” – a visually engaging one-page summary of your work in part 2 with the SMCCD sustainability team in mind as an audience. Requirements and Tips for Success in Part 1, the Annotated Bibliography As you research, you will write an annotated bibliography entry for each source. One of your sources should be part of the SMCCD Sustainability website (https://sites.google.com/my.smccd.edu/smcccdsustainability/home?authuser=0), and the others should include at least one source that is NOT a website (e.g. a news article, a scholarly journal article, a video, or a book). You should also use different sources from the others in your group. This will give you more ideas for sources for your paper. You can (and should!) use more than three sources for your paper, listing all of them in your Works Cited, but only three annotated bibliography entries are required. Each entry should be structured as follows: 1. A full MLA citation and a link to the source (if available) – If you want help citing your source, visit the CSM Library Citation Page (https://libguides.collegeofsanmateo.edu/mla) for guidelines and to access NoodleTools, a citation generator. 2. A paragraph with a brief summary of the source and an evaluation of the source: The summary (3-5 sentences) – The first sentence should be a citation sentence and include the main idea of the whole article. – Summarize the information that relates to your topic. – Don’t repeat information you have included in a different summary; the source should add new information to your project. – Be concise! Follow the guidelines for an effective summary. The evaluation (3-5 sentences) – First, evaluate the quality of the source. – Mention the type of source and explain how it does or does not meet the criteria in the CRAAP test. – Consider commenting on the accessibility of the source’s language, layout etc; you may also mention whether or not you recommend it to another ESL 400 student and why. – Next, describe how the content of the source adds to your project. – What important evidence does it add that other sources don’t have? – How will that evidence complement the other information you have already found? – How will that engage, inform, or persuade readers? Requirements and Tips for Success in Part 2, the Essay Write 4 pages minimum (12-point font, approximately 1200 words, double-spaced). Include the following: An introduction that – Builds urgency about the issue, showing why it matters. – Provides background information that readers need to understand your findings. – Ends with a thesis statement with a clear point of view. Body paragraphs that use the PEA(EA) strategy. Topic sentences should give the point of each paragraph clearly near the beginning. Evidence from at least 4 sources in the form of summaries, paraphrases, and/or quotations. Sources must include: – The Story of More, by Hope Jahren – The SMCCD Sustainability website (https://sites.google.com/my.smccd.edu/smcccdsustainability/home?authuser=0) – At least 2 additional sources from a library database (https://collegeofsanmateo.edu/library/) – Follow guidelines for when and how to quote. – Paraphrase more often than you quote! – Your own analysis of the significance of that evidence. A conclusion that – Reviews the main points of the essay and – Leaves the reader with a final thought about the importance of this issue and a call to action about what readers/SMCCD might do. Unit 3 grammar and vocabulary labeled as follows: – 2 noun phrase appositives, bolded and labeled (NPA) – 2 participle phrases, bolded and labeled (PARTP) – 4 words from The Story of More vocabulary list (see appendix A of the Course Reader) bolded and labeled (VOC) A Works Cited page formatted properly using MLA style. Annotated bibliography entries are not needed here (that’s a separate document) – just the full citations. Requirements and Tips for Success in Part 3, the One-Pager Create a one page, 8 ½ by 11 inch document that fills the entire page with: – A title that accurately reflects your project. – The key takeaways from your project, particularly as they apply to SMCCD’s sustainability team. – Your thesis (You may want to change the wording to fit the topic and format). – Brief information about your evaluation of SMCCD’s sustainability program. – Your suggestions for further steps. – At least one quote. – Don’t forget citations! – At least 2 visual elements – pictures, symbols, or charts. – Be creative! You may create this digitally, with a tool like Canva or by hand. – You should also be ready to explain your one-pager to others. (The idea for one-pagers comes from Cult of Pedagogy (https://www.cultofpedagogy.com/one-pagers/) and AVID (https://www.alvordschools.org/site/handlers/filedownload.ashx?moduleinstanceid=18523&dataid=30429&FileName=One_Pager_Overview.pdf)

On the next content page, some essay writing resources are provided if you would like to review how to write an essay, essay structure, and MLA formatting guidelines.
    Academic Integrity
You must include properly cited quotations from The Kite Runner as your proof or evidence.
You have learned about the psychological and the socio-economic approaches in Units 1 and 2. Now, you will write an essay about Amir’s journey in The Kite Runner, using the archetypal approach.
Recall reading about Carl Jung’s archetypes in Unit 1, Activity 1, where they were grouped with Sigmund Freud’s work as a part of the psychological lens. Some literary theorists argue that archetypes while having origins in psychology, can also stand alone as an analytical lens. For this essay, you will be working with the archetypes of The Hero’s Journey, as theorized by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
Watch the Ted ED video below for a helpful overview of the hero’s journey. Watch the video once for an overview of the hero’s journey, and then watch it again a second time, thinking about how some of the stop points on the hero’s journey apply to Amir in The Kite Runner. What is Amir’s status quo? Does he get assistance? What is his departure? What is his renewed status quo at the end of the novel? For your essay, you will work with 4-6 of the steps you choose from the hero’s journey to apply to Amir’s psychological and physical journeys.
TED ED – What Makes a Hero? Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhk4N9A0oCA
You can use the handout in the link below to take notes on each of the 12 steps of the hero’s journey.

Always keep in mind that the hero’s journey is both physical and psychological.
An important point to remember is that while a hero’s journey may be PHYSICAL (traveling to new places), at the same time, and even more importantly, the hero’s journey is PSYCHOLOGICAL. By the end of the hero’s journey, the hero has undergone a transformation or fundamental change in their personality or way of thinking about the world. They are NOT the same person they were at the start of their journey or story.
The link below is another resource handout that explains each of the twelve steps in detail:

  • “Breaking Barriers: Exploring Language Accessibility for Individuals with Disabilities through Technology”

    THE DIRECTION:
In my final paper I will be focusing on the accessibility of communicating the English language for people with disabilities. I might possibly extend this to go beyond just the English language, and T consider all languages and how different industries utilize the softwares. Speech and written communication assistance will allow a whole group of people the chance to communicate with others in their own communities. The rise of technology will allow people from all walks of life to communicate with virtually anyone on the planet.
    WHAT MY PROFESSOR SAID:
Nice. maybe focus on 1-2 pieces of software/technology that aid in this that you can write a 6 page paper about using 6-8 academic sources.
    WHAT I WANT:
I really want it to focus on language, communication, and what not
I want the cons as well and discussion about how things like google translate struggle because our language is metaphorical. Meaning like because of phrases and whatnot it is difficult sometimes because of different cultures (hopefully that makes sense) for example: “it’s raining cats and dogs here” “you’re trash bro”
    6 pages

  • “Unveiling My True Self: A Personal Statement for the Renaissance Scholars Program” As I sit down to write this personal statement, I am filled with both excitement and nervousness. Excitement, because I have the opportunity to introduce

The personal statement is an important part of your application to the Renaissance Scholars program at CSU, East Bay. We use your personal statement to learn more about you as an individual – your talents, experiences, achievements, and points of view. Think of the personal statement as your opportunity to introduce yourself to us.
What would you like us to know about you that may not be evident from a review of the rest of your application? Here, you may want to write about people who have influenced you, situations that have shaped you, difficulties or conflicts with which you have struggled with, goals and hopes you may have for the future, or something else you consider significant. Regardless of what you choose to write about, your personal statement should reflect your own ideas and be written by you alone. Present your ideas in a focused, thoughtful manner. Support your ideas with specific examples. Personal statements comprised of lists of qualities or accomplishments are not useful or effective.
Instructions: Please use no more than 250 – 500 words for your personal statement.

  • “Annotated Bibliography: Exploring the Impact of Social Media on Mental Health”
