For this final exam, Using the reading “The Epic of Gilgamesh” that we have read in
this class. Using quotes, cited in-text in MLA format, pulled from the text we read for that area and the
notes/PowerPoints and lectures over that work and culture. Use key words from the lecture to prove
that you understood the cultural significance and meaning of the work as it relates to the time
period/culture in question.
This will be 900 words in length and will require two things to be cited and included in the works cited
page at the end: the primary source/story you chose, and one piece of research/outside source to
enhance your reasoning for why you identified with that culture and era the best.

“The Truth Behind the Biopic: An Analysis of Historical Accuracy in the Film Portrayal of [Historical Figure]”
Identify a biographical film that attempts to portray a “historical” figure, someone who was/is an actual, real-life person. Then, write a focused, purposeful research paper in which you argue whether, based on your research, the film accurately portrays the person it attempts to. Your essay should also make some larger point about why the accuracies/inaccuracies in the film are important, significant, or meaningful. You will also find and incorporate into your essay at least FIVE outside sources that explore the historical figure or person the film attempts to portray (newspaper/magazine/journal accounts, books, and websites about the actual person). These sources will be documented using MLA guidelines. You must use at least one periodical source (magazine, newspaper, scholarly journal), one book source, and one (legitimate) web source (I’d prefer it if you did not use Wikipedia, though that’s a good place to look for other sources…). ALSO, you should NOT merely look for sources (websites) that are already pointing out inaccuracies in the film—you need to do some of your own original research, as well.

Research Paper (Paper 3): The Creature’s Education
Research Question: What text most shapes the Creature’s identity or sense of self?
In Volume II of Frankenstein the Creature finds three books that contribute to his education: Milton’s Paradise Lost, Plutarch’s Lives (also sometimes called Parallel Lives), and Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther. Two other books that Shelley references are Volney’s Ruins of Empires (which unfortunately it is difficult to find quality information about), and also implicitly is one written by her mother, Wollstonecraft’s Vindication of the Rights of Woman.
Research one of the books listed above to learn more about it and to learn more about how it shapes the creature’s identity. You can read exerpts (or the whole thing, of course!) from the source you choose, they are all available for free on Gutenberg.org. Use quotations from Frankenstein to support your argument, as well as quotations and paraphrasing from your research sources (primary and secondary). Your paper should be 1300-1500 words long.
You will need 3 outside sources (besides Frankenstein) in your essay, one of which you find on your own. If you decide to read and cite parts of the primary source, then you will need 2 more secondary sources. These secondary sources can be one that I provide and one that you find yourself, but must be scholarly sources. You need to log in to the library’s databases when prompted using your CUNY login information.
1. Choose one from the following:
Milton, Paradise Lost Book I (more if you like): https://milton.host.dartmouth.edu/reading_room/pl/book_1/text.shtml
Plutarch, Lives, Life of Theseus (and more if you like): https://www.gutenberg.org/files/14033/14033-h/14033-h.htm#LIFE_OF_PLUTARCH
Goethe The Sorrows of Young Werther, the whole novel is about the same length as Frankenstein: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/2527/2527-h/2527-h.htm
Wollstonecraft: The Vindication of the Rights of Woman(exerpts are attached as a PDF), or read it all here: https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/3420/pg3420-images.html
2. You can use one of the secondary sources provided, and then you must find one more secondary source on your own.
Reminder: You will need FOUR total sources: Frankenstein plus three more (either a primary and two secondary, or three secondary). You must find one of the secondary sources on your own.
For secondary sources, one source must come from a Library Databases. You can find a full list of English literature databases here: https://bmcc.libguides.com/english. I recommend the encyclopedias on Literary Reference Center (EBSCO), and articles on JStor.
You can cite in your paper:
The primary sources
Articles found on databases through the library
Articles or websites from museums and libraries (e.g. The British Library, The Library of Congress, The British Museum, etc.)
Articles published on academic websites (.edu) like this one: http://omeka.wustl.edu/omeka/exhibits/show/monsters-library/creatures-library -
“The Power of Language: Examining the Effects of Stigmatizing Dialects in Education and Society”
Instructions
I. Please read the following:
1. “What’s Wrong With Black English”
2. “The Lesson”
II. Please submit a two-page essay––as a Word docx attachment––that connects with, or reflects on, anything from this week’s readings or classwork. Rather than creating a simple analysis (which doesn’t usually yield the best writing), try to develop an idea, follow a direction, elaborate on a theme, argue for or against a position––or some kind of approach that works for you. And if you choose to write from the readings, you do not need to glean from both of them. -
Selecting a Topic and Crafting an Annotated Bibliography
Assignment Overview
What is an annotated bibliography?
An annotated bibliography is an alphabetized list of sources with descriptive commentary. Each entry in the bibliography consists of an MLA-formatted citation followed by 3 paragraphs (roughly 100-150 words total) of evaluation: this is the “annotation.” The first paragraph summarizes the source, the second paragraph assesses the source, and the third paragraph reflects on the source. An annotated bibliography is your first review of the literature on your research topic.
Do I need to choose a research question in order to do an Annotated Bibliography?
YES, you do—well, at least a “topic” idea. The first step in crafting an annotated bibliography is to figure out what topic you would like to investigate. Thus, an annotated bibliography begins with a broad search. This approach will help you to narrow down your research topic and ultimately, lead you to your focused research question. The sources you choose to include in your Annotated Bibliography should be related to the topic you have chosen. After reviewing and analyzing multiple sources on your chosen topic, you will be able to mount an argument where you make a claim based on your research topic.
Will the topic I ultimately choose for my Annotated Bibliography evolve into all the other assignments I draft for this course?
Yes. Of course, you can always change your topic after this assignment is completed and graded, but you will have to start the research process over again on your new topic. The reading and research you do to prepare for and draft the Annotated Bibliography is the foundation for the following assignments: The Research Proposal, Research Outline, Researched Argumentative Essay, and the Research Story.
Selecting a Topic: Are there any off-limit topics?
Selecting the right topic is an important step in ensuring your success in researching and writing an argument–starting with the Annotated Bibliography and including the Research Proposal, Outline and Story.
You’ll want to choose a topic that has the following features:
Of interest to you
Relevant
Current
Debatable
Well-researched
Narrow in scope
Academic or “scholarly” in nature
Topics to avoid, as they are either too complex to debate in a single essay, or not considered appropriate for an academic or scholarly argument, are as follows:
The death penalty
Euthanasia or self-assisted death
Abortion
The (il)legalization of drugs (e.g. marijuana)
Religion or religious readings (e.g. existence of a higher order/being, or life after death)
Gun rights/rules
Global warming
Please do not select one of the above 7 topics, as your essay may be returned without grading, and you will be asked to rewrite it. -

“Unpacking the Power of Emotional Appeal in Advertisements: A Critical Analysis of Dove’s ‘Real Beauty’ Campaign”
Choose an advertisement or a series of advertisements to analyze. If you choose more than one ad to analyze, there must be some unifying theme that connects them (e.g. ads for the same product among different companies; ads targeting the same audience; ads from the same company over the years; etc.).
Remember to move beyond just summary and description; you will analyze and evaluate the ad(s). Mainly, the ad(s) you choose will have a visual component, but you may also choose to use an audio advertisement. Some questions to answer about your chosen ad(s):
Are the visuals convincing? (the written text?)
How well does it appeal to the intended audience?
How does the presence or absence of logical fallacies influence the effectiveness of the ad(s)?
No matter which option you choose, your essay should have a clear introduction with an unambiguous thesis sentence; organized body paragraphs with clear topic sentences, valid evidence, and adequate support for evidence; and an engaging conclusion. Use MLA style throughout – from essay format to citation methods.
Refer back to the pages in this unit on analyzing visuals to help you analyze and evaluate your ads.
Requirements
1700-1900 words
Give your essay a unique title
MLA formatting throughout, including a Works Cited page (not part of the word count)
Your essay should be in your own words, free from any elements of plagiarism, and any use of outside sources needs to be properly cited.
Including an image of the ad(s) in your essay is beneficial but optional.
