“Germany’s Response to Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine: Navigating History, Diplomacy, and Public Opinion”
Over the course of the semester, you have become deeply familiar with German histories of imperialism and genocide, and with the serious public debates about democracy, dictatorship, and reconciliation that have followed acts of aggression and barbarism. Drawing on that knowledge, and on the materials provided in the Essay module along with this prompt, compose a detailed introduction to the landscape of German public opinion and the political debate about how Germany should respond to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Your article should be pitched towards an educated, general US-American readership.
First, do the reading:
Relying on a reputable English-language source of your choosing (e.g. Wall StreetJournal, New York Times, Guardian, or Economist), re-familiarize yourself with the rough timeline of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the collective and individual response by NATO members to the invasion, and the progress of the war.
Carefully read the Zeit’s interview with Olaf Scholz March 25th, 2022,taking note of how Scholz frames the question of German involvement in military conflicts, the risk of nuclear war, and the place of diplomacy after a conflict has begun.
Carefully read the economic and intellectual historian Adam Tooze’s essay on the debate among German intellectuals, published in mid-May, 2022, taking note of how Tooze’s profile of Jürgen Habermas connects this philosopher’s views to past moments in German political history.
Following Tooze’s lead (as he quotes it in his article), look at the open letter to Olaf Scholz from a range of German intellectuals, published May 3rd, 2022, noting the problems they see with German involvement in the war, and the recommendations they make for Scholz’s policy moving forward.
Finally, read the extensive article in the Spiegel, published June 6th, 2022, and map out the different views expressed within the German political parties about the correct steps to take in response to this conflict.
Next, do the writing. In order to receive full points for this assignment, you will need to provide a comprehensive presentation of German actions and sentiments about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, quoting relevant experts and politicians and contextualizing recent events with respect to the broader historical context. Your reader should walk away from your article informed about where Germany stands (officially) on the question of the war in Ukraine, and they should understand how Germany’s past (and the process of coming to terms with that past) has affected both public discussion and official policy. -

Title: Re-evaluating My Paper Through a Gender Criticism Lens After gaining a new perspective through the use of gender criticism, I would approach my paper with a more critical and nuanced understanding of the relationships within the text. I would highlight
Write a 200-250 word re-evaluation of how you’d write your paper differently with this new “perspective” you’ve gained. What points would you highlight?
For example, if you were using gender criticism, how would you evaluate the relationships? What would change? Would you push your insights further? How would you do this? -
“Mastering the Art of Persuasion: Crafting a Concise and Effective Four-Page Paper” “The Power of Research: Defending Your Position with Evidence”
You are to revise your paper down to FOUR pages pages exactly — not one word more, not one word less. Remember that works cited pages NEVER count in the page number. If you do not revise the paper down to four pages, you will receive a 50/100.
Revise, Revise, Revise!!
This will be the best paper you have ever written in college! You will be able to use this as a writing sample.
A few things of note:
You are allowed only ONE direct quote per source, and only ONE per page (four page paper, two total quotes, from two different sources). You do not have to use two direct quotes, but you must use at least one, and it must be properly embedded, explained, and cited in the paper. If you use more than three or use more than one from the same source, the highest grade you can receive is a 50/100, assuming every other aspect of the paper is correct.
Paraphrased information must be cited. If your paper is not properly cited with in text citations, it is plagiarized and will receive a 0/100.
Paraphrasing must be completely your own words — if it matches too much to the original source, then the paper is plagiarized and will receive a 0/100.
Your citations on your works cited page must have the proper format: They must be in alphabetical order, have a hanging indent (lots of You Tube Videos can teach you this), and be in full 9th edition MLA format. Improper citation is also a form of plagiarism, and the highest grade you can receive if your Works Cited page is not correct is a 50/100 — you have turned in a version of this page several times already (sourcing, AB, research submission and rough draft) and have been given ample opportunity to fix these errors.
EACH PARAGRAPH MUST CONTAIN CITATIONS TO AT LEAST TWO SOURCES.
DO NOT REFERENCE THE RESEARCH IN THE TEXT OF YOUR WRITING (see below for discussion of this)
I did not read your rough draft for content — I read for formatting and other components. Therefore, it is entirely possible for you to do very well on the rough draft and extremely poorly on the final — as I will be reading for both format and content at that time.
Remember, you want to revise your paper down to FOUR exact pages. Not one extra or less word.
If you have any questions, please send me a message or email.
Prof. Roddy
Below is a copy of the announcement with the writing tips in case you missed it:
READ THIS CAREFULLY AND MULTIPLE TIMES. All of it is review of all of the lectures for the past modules and much of it is covered in this module’s lecture as well. However, make sure that you understand all of it before you write. If not, send me a message.
Before you write, be sure to review the PAC of this assignment.
Purpose: to make a reader see things your way;
To convince them of your arguments or position
USE the research to support
Audience: general/classmates
Content:
Include: THIRD PERSON,
argumentative points
USE of the research
Exclude: first and second person, personal opinion, abstract language
Tone: persuasive
WHAT DOES USE OF THE RESEARCH MEAN?
It means that you use the research; you don’t summarize, reflect, or respond to it. As such: DO NOT REFERENCE THE RESEARCH IN THE TEXT OF YOUR WRITING.
Even though you won’t include the author’s name in your writing, you will still need documentation (citation). Referencing and documentation are not the same thing. Be sure you understand the difference.
Referencing texts means: “According to ….” Or “In a study …” or by providing a summary or reflection of a source. Do not do this. If you do this, you will earn an automatic F.
You are USING the research
This means that you state your point and then you provide fact to prove that your point is correct.
Difference between telling someone “hey, I heard on TV that the hurricane season will be bad” and saying “The hurricane season will be bad” (TV weatherman).
In the first one, you come off as a repeater of information — a summarizer. No one thinks you actually KNOW the information, you’re just repeating what you heard.
In the other, you come off as the expert — you did your research and you have the receipts to prove your knowledge.
Introduction: Your introduction should contain the context of your issue. Do not assume that the reader will know anything about your topic. You may need to provide some background information — at least enough for the reader to understand that there is some level of debate.
Thesis statement: must identify the issue AND set up the position of your paper
Sentences in the introduction must be sentences that are individual to your paper
No global or broad stroke sentence (Since the beginning of time, man has fought wars …)
Every sentence in the introduction should be one that cannot be used in any other paper.
Argumentative Points: you will make 4/5 argumentative points that support your position.
Supported by USING the research
Provide citations and documentation
Each point should be supported by at LEAST two different sources
Only one DQ per source (and for this class, this means you may only have 2 DQs total, as you were only allowed to pull DQs from two sources)
you are limited to the DQ researching submission for these
Must follow the rules for DQ use
Each paragraph must make a connection to the thesis and your position — do not assume the reader will figure it out
Conclusion: Do not restate your thesis or summarize your paper in the conclusion.
Do not have a “call to action” – this is not appropriate for this PAC.
Write a theme statement: message or point of the paper
these are general statements that could be applied other papers
For thesis and theme review, see the early lectures in the first two modules.
Last, be sure to meet the length requirement; the works cited page never counts, and a partial page is not a full page. Use MLA style and formatting. and do not write a five paragraph paper — this paper is far too long for that.
Sourcing: We will begin by completing a library orientation in which you will learn to use the library databases for this assignment to locate six sources for this assignment. No open web sources are allowed in this course. More information about sourcing is found in the modules.
Researching and Outlining: You will paraphrase and property cite your research a specific research template. More information about this is also found in the modules. These are separate grades, but the two steps are completed simultaneously. The majority of your paper (98%) will consist of paraphrased research. There are limits and specific requirements for the use of direct quotes. Specific requirements will be addressed in detail in the modules. -
Title: “The Power of Protest” The city was buzzing with energy as thousands of people flooded the streets, their voices raised in unison. Signs and banners filled the air, each one bearing a powerful message of change and hope. This was
Please write a short story about protest. Obviously 850 words isnt enough to write a whole
story so it just needs to be a scene.
I would like the contention of the story to be either “even if you dont create immediate change protest is still crucial in developing a better society” or “Protests create urgency for dialogue and negotiation, setting the stage for reformation”
Attached is things to think about and Kurt Vonneguts “Harrison bergeron” which is what id like my short story to be written in a similar writing style. -
“Adapting to a Changing World: A Cli-Fi Short Story” Title: “The Last Island” The year was 2050 and the world had drastically changed. The effects of climate change were evident everywhere – rising sea levels, extreme weather
This assignment gives you the opportunity to celebrate what you have learned this semester by writing your own Cli-Fi short story or screenplay. Feel free to explore any of the ideas, themes, settings, etc. that have come up in class or in your imagination. Think of some “What if’s” and write a story that explores that question. While climate change often brings visions of dystopian settings and situations, change can also bring or inspire positive developments (think of ‘Staying Afloat’). You might take this opportunity to explore how humans might adapt to a new environment, a new reality. Note: You are welcome to integrate your research into this short story project. You might choose to do research that will help you build the setting or conflicts in your short story. You might take the opportunity of the research project and the short story project to explore a climate change consequence like sea-level rise or increased volcanic activity or an adaptation like geo-engineering. Use real science and the storytelling techniques

“Uncovering the Problem: An Introduction to the Field of [Topic]”
Topic Background Essay Prompt
The first essay you will complete for our Research Project is the Topic Background Essay. In this essay, you will introduce your topic (a particular job, career, or field of business), give background information on it, and introduce a problem facing your topic. Your goal in the essay is to give us enough information about your topic that we understand why it matters and why the problem facing it matters. This will prepare us for your next essay, in which you will offer a solution to that problem.
As part of the Research Project, the Topic Background Essay should be built on research from reliable sources. This can include experiences you’ve had firsthand or opinions from people you know in the field. However, the majority of your information should come from reliable external sources: media sources, academic journals, and government agencies. Your essay should cite at least four different sources, and many will need to cite more to provide enough information. Your research should be documented using MLA citation.
Below is the general structure your essay should follow.
Introduction (1 paragraph). Introduces the topic and gives an overview of what you will tell us about it.
History (1-2 paragraphs). Gives us the origins of this field and recent developments. Questions to consider: When did this field emerge? What have been some important developments (technological, social, etc.) in its development? Is it as important now as it used to be?
Scope and impact (2 paragraphs). In one paragraph, tell us who is involved in this field, both the raw number of people and also who tends to do the work (using categories like age, education level, etc.). In the second paragraph, tell us how the field matters for the economy and society: how much money it produces, why people need the service it provides, etc.
Problem (2 paragraphs). Define a problem facing the field. Give the history, the scope of the problem (how wide its effect is), and the harms it causes to the field (e.g. harms to profitability, safety, job satisfaction, customer satisfaction, etc.).
Conclusion (1 brief paragraph). In about two sentences, sum up what you’ve told us, with an emphasis on the importance of addressing the problem you’ve identified. -
“Breaking Barriers: The Impact of Language and Technology on Communication Accessibility for People with Disabilities”
THE DIRECTION:
In my final paper I will be focusing on the accessibility of communicating the English language for people with disabilities. I might possibly extend this to go beyond just the English language, and T consider all languages and how different industries utilize the softwares. Speech and written communication assistance will allow a whole group of people the chance to communicate with others in their own communities. The rise of technology will allow people from all walks of life to communicate with virtually anyone on the planet.
WHAT MY PROFESSOR SAID:
Nice. maybe focus on 1-2 pieces of software/technology that aid in this that you can write a 6 page paper about using 6-8 academic sources.
WHAT I WANT:
I really want it to focus on language, communication, and what not
I want the cons as well and discussion about how things like google translate struggle because our language is metaphorical. Meaning like because of phrases and whatnot it is difficult sometimes because of different cultures (hopefully that makes sense) for example: “it’s raining cats and dogs here” “you’re trash bro”
