Title: “Breaking Down and Analyzing the Rhetorical Style of Sara Clemence’s ‘My Fellow Americans, Let’s Be Better Tourists’”
In an essay of at least 500 words, break down and critically analyze the rhetorical style/structure of Sara Clemence’s “My Fellow Americans, Let’s Be Better Tourists (it is also available as a PDF here). Examine such issues as audience (who is Clemence’s audience [typical NY Times reader?], how does she try to situate and persuade her audience, and why does she employ a certain type of rhetorical style to do so?), use of Aristotelian appeals (what kind of ethos does Clemence construct for herself in the essay and why; how does she employ pathos-based and logos-based moves to try to engage the audience?), use of rhetorical moves (what moves does she favor and to what ends?), and essay structure and tone (why does she position material in certain places; what kind of overarching sensibilities/attitudes does she subscribe to throughout and how does she intend the audience to receive these?). You are not required to cover all of these issues; quite frankly, in an essay of 500 words, you would not be able to even if you tried. Limit yourself to one or perhaps two of these categories (if you choose two, make sure that you develop a tight bridge between one and the other, i.e. audience and use of logos; rhetorical moves and ethos; so on), and spend your entire essay critically analyzing the relationship between your analytical focus(es) and the overall rhetorical style/structure of Clemence’s essay. Create a controlling idea (thesis) for the entire piece, and controlling ideas (topic sentences) for the body paragraphs. Moreover, include an introduction, at least two body paragraphs of four to five sentences each, and a conclusion. Make certain to develop your ideas with support sentences and specific details (you should cite and comment on material from the Clemence’s essay in order to further your analysis).
Considerations:
As with other major assignments, the document must be submitted in doc or pdf format.
Do not write a summary of Clemence’s article. I’ve read it; I do not need a summary. Make sure that your essay–from start to finish–is based in analysis of some of the Clemence’s rhetoric (see the prompt for possible analytical approaches).
Do not craft an essay agreeing or disagreeing with Clemence’s position. Whether you like or dislike her contentions has little bearing on the objectives of the assignment. Focus your analytical attention, instead, on aspects of her rhetoric (again, see the prompt for possible analytical approaches).
Note: This article was chosen for no other reason than its conduciveness to the purpose (rhetorical analysis) of the assignment. -
The Modern Journey of J. Alfred Prufrock: Symbolism, Imagery, and Elegy in T. S. Eliot’s Love Song
Please only write for topic #4:
T. S. Eliot’s great lyric The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock
represents the work of a major modern poet. Eliot’s
poem includes symbols, images, and wit.
– 14 point font and double spaced
– no sources, only quote poem
– 3-4 pages, you will need to consider the following:
· How does
Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred
Prufrock (1910-1911) become a prime example of modern poetry? What does the
title mean? The lyric begins with: “Let us go then,
you and I.” What sort of journey does the speaker undergo? When does the
speaker undertake the quest? Why does Eliot compare the “evening” to a “patient
etherised” (lines 2-3)? What does the image suggest about consciousness?
· What is
imagism? How is this evident in Eliot’s poem? CHOOSE TWO IMAGES: 1) What does
the image of women who “come and go talking of Michelangelo” mean? OR 2) What
does the juxtaposition of the images of “descend[ing] the stair” and a “bald
spot” suggest? OR 3) What does the image of “coffee spoons” mean? OR 4) What do
the “ragged claws / Scuttling across the floors of silent seas” mean? OR 5)
What does the image of the “eternal Footman” holding the coat of the speaker
suggest? What is significant about the POETIC SUBJECT, THEMES, and POETIC TONE
in these images?
· To what
extent do you consider Eliot’s The Love
Song of J. Alfred Prufrock to be an elegy? How do you INTERPRET the last
line regarding the “human voices” who “wake us” and “we drown”? How do these
images represent modern poetry? -

“Strengthening the Introduction and Argument: A Critical Analysis of the Connection Between War and Mental Health in Slaughterhouse-Five and The Bell Jar”
Hey I just have some issues with my essay.
. My main concern is your introduction; it is repetitive and a bit vague. Introductions are one of the most difficult parts of writing a paper. I highly recommend looking into the introduction powerpoint in the additional resources file. With your thesis, the reversal strategy would be particularly strong; people understand war is a part of slaughterhouse five but don’t think of the bell jar as war related, by reading the two novels together we better understand xyz. I think what you also need to make really clear in this introduction is why these two novels are connected; what is the exact interpretation other than “both talk about war”? From your thesis creation assignment, I think your argument was more clearly rooted in how both novels portray war as a factor in mental health disassociation in particular. Make these elements more clear and strengthen the introduction; the job of your introduction is to serve your thesis statement, not to present background information. Keep in mind your readers; anyone reading an academic paper on the subject should be familiar enough to have read the books, so summary is needed for context only. Without this strong guiding thesis, your paragraphs are unorganized and are not grounded in the argument. Each paragraph is mostly a summary of the novel with no quotations or analysis. There are also MAJOR factual issues and very vague statements that are confusing to the reader; you provide no relationship to these concepts to the thesis. Remember the KUP Method and the importance of always going back to the thesis. Another very important issue is the lack of quotations in your paper. You MUST include quotations in the paper. You also provide in text citations with no quotations or direct reference to materials, which is confusing to a reader. You should be consistently directly quoting both the novels AND the academic sources. Without these elements, there is no way to tell exactly what you’re talking about or convey your level of both understanding and analysis. This is crucial to writing a strong academic paper, as the direct quotations are your evidence to support your argument. Your paper should be about 15-25% quotations.
