“Identifying and Solving Campus/Community-Based Problems: A Group Project Analysis and Solution”
This paper will begin with a 300 word Problem Analysis and
Identification, sent to me in Memo format. In small groups,
students will identify a campus or community-based problem. They will
then research the issue and produce a range of possible solutions,
including plans of action for each. This project includes a presentation
of preliminary research findings for each issue. The final written
project should be 1000 words MAXIMUM. Must include at least 4 outside
research sources (interviews and/or surveys must account for one of the
sources), using a citation style appropriate to the discipline.
This project has a very specific format. Details in the next post in the thread.
Teacher Instructions:
In addition to the basic format outlined above, there are specific
steps to follow for the Group project. First, analyze the problem and
propose to research it with a memo:
Problem analysis steps:
Gain agreement on the problem definition.
Understand the root causes—the problem behind the problem.
Identify the stakeholders and the users.
Define the solution system boundary (defined below)
Propose a solution.
So:
Step 1, write a memo to me documenting and defining the problem (Step 1) DO NOT PROPOSE A SOLUTION YET
Step 2, after my response, meet and put together a full analysis and solution, following steps 2-5
Step 3, in groups, present the full project to the class (upload a powerpoint presentation)
Step 4, submit Final Document
The solution system boundary involves limiting the
solution you are trying to change. Thinking of the solution as a system
is important, because you solutions will have many moving parts. Ask
yourself questions like this to help limit your solution.
Who will supply, use, or remove information from the system?
Who will operate the system?
Who will perform any system maintenance?
Where will the system be used?
Where does the system get its information?
What other external systems will interact with the system?
What funding, expertise, and other constraints will be placed on our system?
First Product: Problem analysis memo (300 words):
A problem analysis memo (which you also might call a memo of
understanding) establishes your understanding of a particular problem by
analyzing its various facets. Such a memo can be helpful for a several
reasons.
The very act of putting together a
document forces you to think through the problem. By developing a
written analysis, you’re likely to recognize facets of the problem that
you would have missed had you rushed in without preparation.
Such a memo helps establish that
you and others share similar understandings of a situation. It helps you
ensure that you’re doing what your instructor and colleagues expect.
The memo also helps you start to
create a paper trail for the problem. It lets you begin to create a
record of your work and thinking in regard to a particular situation.
Final Product is Problem Analysis and Solution (1000 words):
Use these categories in your paper! Each one should be a section of the final document, with a subheadline separating them.
Statement of problem (revised initial problem memo) and analysis
Stakeholders and others it might affect
Solution system boundary
Solutions: cost/benefit analysis, benefit to stakeholders, scope of solution(s), problem anticipation. -

I will Submit the PdF below for you to edit.
You must submit a brief cover letter that accomplishes three tasks:
it identifies the particular feedback you intend to address,

explains how your revision addresses the feedback you received.
You should submit the revised draft, including substantial changes (not just proofreading or minor editing).
The feedback that was given.
I think you manage to offer some good advice to Franklin. In general, I think the main way you could improve this essay (and perhaps other writing you do) is by providing greater specificity. I’m going to focus my comments here on two areas: organization and evidence. First, I want to talk about your organization at the level of the paragraph. Your entire four-page paper is a single paragraph! We’ve talked in class about using the MEAL plan to organize a paragraph: including the ingredients of Main Claim, Evidence, Analysis, and a Link. But it’s impossible to follow that plan if you don’t break your writing up into paragraphs. There are two good reasons to use paragraphs: one concerns consideration for your reader (it’s just easier to read things that are divided up into sections). The other is that paragraphs require you a) to articulate main claims—which are, at the moment, deeply buried or disguised in your essay; and b) to pay careful attention to how your evidence and analysis support those claims. So we can move on to evidence. You spend a lot of time *telling* Franklin what Paine and Washington do in their writing, but you spend almost no time *showing* Franklin how they do it. So you’ve left Franklin with little evidence about *how* to achieve the same effects Paine and Washington do. This concerns evidence at two levels. One, you need more of it. What specific examples do you have *from the text*? You focus mostly on diction or word choice: What words do Paine and Washington use? Where? In what context? The second level of evidence is actually analysis. You should analyze the evidence in such a way that you show Franklin how the evidence you cite does what you say it does. If you decide to revise this paper later in the semester, I think paying attention to the two types of feedback I’ve offered above will make this a better paper! -

He’s speaking here about the ubiquity of technologies, like Google, which are increasingly “doing our thinking for us.” If you select this prompt, you’ll focus on one aspect of modern technology to explore. You could examine the history of the Internet (which, according to some academics, was originally developed by female programmers). You might research the history of a legendary technology company like Apple, Google, or Microsoft. You could write about the emotional, psychological, and/or physical impacts of social media use on any given demographic – teenage females and/or males, millennials, or populations of color, for example. Whatever sub-topic you choose, your goal will be to research one element of our technology-driven world. Your essay should be 6-8 pages long. Your Works Cited page does not count towards this count, but a Works Cited page is mandatory
