Many people have a desire to graduate college one day; however, without the proper motivation, this desire is simply a dream. Johnathan Williams argues that people need to physically write their educational goals on paper and post them, so they can visually be reminded of their commitment to success, in his article, “I Need a Degree.” Williams pushes many of his friends to succeed in small goals because “small successes lead to greater self-esteem and more motivation” (32). Next, Rebecca Cox strongly believes that many irrational fears can adversely affect first-year college students’ success in college unless they have a fear-management strategy, in her article, “The Student Fear Factor.” According to Cox, many English students are simply overwhelmed by the volume of expectations and assignments and will say, “I’m not going to be able to make it”, when all they need to do is find a support network for the courses they have (20). Lastly, Carol Dweck argues that the definition that students use for intelligence greatly affects motivation and learning in her article, “Brainology.” According to Dweck, the definitions lead to the development of mindsets that “have profound implications on motivation and learning” in any learning environment (1). As a result of success building strategies, many people have graduated from college, started businesses, and accomplished their goals.
    Paragraph 2- example
The portion of William’s article where he described how he helped his best friend was compelling to me because it reminded me of the time when my God -Father helped me to overcome my fear of writing. In this portion of the article, Williams told his friend that not helping his best friend in life would be an eternal stain on his permanent record in Heaven (33). My God-father told me that I had to succeed because I represented him. He could write well, and he was determined to teach me the tenets of writing. I wanted to write well. I listened to everything my God-father shared with me, just like Williams’s best friend listened to him. I practiced day and night using the skills my mentor gave me. I am sure the best friend followed instructions too. In the end, I accomplished my goal of becoming a better writing much in the same measure of success as the best friend who graduated from college in the article.

  • “The Role of Crow in Grief Is the Thing With Feathers: Insider or Outsider?”

Midterm on Grief Is the Thing With Feathers
Choose one of the prompts below. Write a clear, focused essay answering the question. Submit your paper to Turnitin.
Quoting is not necessary, but direct, specific references to the text are important to ground your discussion. Mark which option you have chosen at the top of your paper. Note there is not a word requirement, but most students write around 800-1000 words in this timed essay when writing in a classroom.
    Option A
Do you consider Crow to be an insider or outsider to Dad and the Boys? He could be either, or both, depending how you see his purpose. Does Crow interfere with or interrupt the Dad and Boys, or support them? What exactly is Crow’s place in the narrative? What is its duty, purpose, or obligation? Crow visits the family in a time of grief and while he seems to surprise Dad, you can argue that Crow is already familiar to Dad because Dad has been writing about the Crow in the work of Ted Hughes. Does Crow visit the family because Dad has already been thinking about him?
    Option B
How does the novel transform its themes into an experience of something? How does the novel address us in a way that seems true? The novel does not seem to offer a singular experience of grief or loss but gives us a confusing picture, at turns playful, heartbroken, sacrilegious, light or profound. For the novel to mean anything at all, we depend on our knowledge about family, loss, grief, and the role strangers and outsiders play in our understanding of ourselves. How does your experience of the novel reflect the novel’s ideas?

  • “The Art of Academic Argument: Using Evidence and Rhetorical Appeals to Take a Stance on a Debatable Issue”

An academic argument is more like a thoughtful conversation between two people with differing viewpoints on a debatable issue. However, you are required to take a position on one side of a debatable issue that is informed by academically appropriate evidence.
For the purposes of this assignment, expressing or relying on your personal opinion of a debate is discouraged. Rather, the essay must argue one side or stance of the debate using the rhetorical appeals (logos, ethos, and pathos) and be supported by academic or scholarly sources. These include physical sources in public libraries, digital sources in academic libraries, online sources (excludes unreliable sources like procon.org and wikipedia.org, which are discouraged), and published expert reports, preferably peer-reviewed by experts in the field to maintain utmost credibility. Consider revisiting the tutorial Finding Sources for more information on appropriate sources for argumentative writing.
there are many different debates being had all around the world about topics that affect our personal, professional, civic, and/or academic lives. Some of these debates have been such hot topics for so long that it has become very difficult to add to the conversation with new and original ideas or stances to take. To move beyond this trend, we have created a list of topics that may not be written about for this Touchstone. This includes example topics that are used in Unit 4. Feel free to access a tutor if you would like support choosing a topic for this essay.

    Directions:
This essay will ask you to compare and contrast two musical performances. These two musical performances can be found on YouTube and can be music videos, videos of live performances, or two music performances you will attend (such as a friend’s concert, a choir concert, a church musical performance). Be sure that your two musical performances are closely related in some way (theme/artist/message/etc.).Example: two music videos about positive body image, but each is by a different artist.
Ideas to compare: What specifically about the message is similar? Similar choreography? Similar genre? Similar artistic expression? Similar background sounds?
Ideas to contrast: Different attitudes toward a similar message? Difference in tone (sad/happy). Difference in type of language used (formal/slang). Difference in who is speaking/being spoken to? (voice).
This paper will focus on creating a thesis, sentence structure, and body paragraphs with details, and explaining your reasoning between comparisons and those details while pulling out specific details from the performances.

Write a conclusion sentence at the end of the last paragraph that uses one of the strategies we discussed this semester (look to the future, call to action, thought-provoking question, and more) while focusing on what the songs have in common as they work together to lookat the “big picture.”
See Owl Purdue for MLA in-text and Works Cited citations.
