    The air conditioning (A/C) unit of a car is operating on a summer day when the temperature is
    30°C. It cools the air to 6°C using 2.5 kW of power output. The A/C has a COP of 3. Find the mass
    flow rate of the cold air that the A/C unit can provide on that particular day. (b) A building freezer that is used to freeze vegetables requires 30 tons of refrigeration to keep the
    food frozen. The temperature of the freezer is -35°C and the ambient temperature outside the
    building is 30°C. If the performance of the freezer is 25% of the theoretical best possible cycle,
    what is the power required to run the freezer. 1 ton of refrigeration is equivalent to 210 kJ/min.

  • “Exploring Data Analysis and Probability Distributions with Excel and R”

    This being a graduate-level course, requires independent research capabilities. I am here to guide you but some of the steps will require you to find the processes step by step.
    Should you have questions, feel free to ask. 
    1. Open the Excel file attached. 
    2. Save each one of the worksheets as separate CSV files
    3. Read the CSV files into R using R Studio
    4. Using Excel:
    For Worksheet 1: Compute the average, mean, and median of the data. Create a histogram, a box plot (box and whisker plot). Using the box plot, identify the 25% and 75% percentile. 
    For Worksheet 2: Prepare a scatter diagram of the 2 variables. Using the statistical toolkit, find for each column, the following data: Mean,standard error,median,mode,standard deviation,sample variance,kurtosis,skewness,range,minimum,maximum,sum,and count
    5. Repeat Step 4 using R instead of Excel. 
    6. Using Excel (Excel pre-built fomulas or your own typed formula), compute the values of a binomial distribution (probability mass function and cumulative probabilities) where successes x = varies from 0 to n, where the attempts n=10, and the probability of success at every attempt is p=0.2. Prepare a graph showing both values
    7. Using Excel, compute the value of a hypergeometric distribution (probability mass function and cumulative distribution), where the number of successes x varies from 0 to n, where the number sampled n=3, the lot size is N= 40, and the total number of successes in the lot X= 4. Prepare a graph showing both probability mass function and cumulative distribution). 
    8 Compare 7 with an approximation to a binomial distribution with equivalent parameters. 

  • Title: Analysis of OC Curves for Simple and Double Sampling Plans

    1. Using MS Excel or other software, prepare the table and graph of an OC curve for simple sampling plans and double sampling plans. For the simple sampling plan consider two options
    a) n=50; c=2; r=3; and
    b) n=65; c=2; r=3.
    For the double sampling plans compute the OC curve of
    a) n1 = 50; c1 = 1; n2 = 40; c2 = 3; r = 4 and
    b) n1 = 65; c1 = 1; n2 = 40; c2 = 3; r = 4. 
    Note: c3 includes defective product found in the first sample plus defective found in the second sample.
    Hint: To a see a worked example, refer to section 15.3.1 in the book and problem #8 in the sample test with solutions
    2. Write a report (MS Word or PDF) describing the contrast between these plans (include the tables and graphics prepared in MS Excel in the written report, particularly the impact on the risk of the consumer and the risk of the producer. Identify in all these plans the conditions that make the risk for the producer to be equal to 5%, and the conditions that make the risk for the consumer to be 10%. Assuming a lot size of 2000, make a graph of the AOC and the ATI for these plans. 
    Indicate which plan is closer to the ideal OC for a sampling plan and why?
    Make sure you properly caption tables, figures, and formulas. If you have questions about this let me know. 
    3. Turn in both your written report and the MS Excel file. 
    4. Extra credit
    If you also turn in an analysis of the OC curve in R, you will get 40% extra credit. The R part of the project requires the code, input, and output of the R in a PDF file, indicating the steps to process the information. It must contain a description of the data frames used and the graphic representation of the OC curves.
