“Intervention Project: Identifying Local Needs and Determining an Intervention Plan”
Overview
Issues in education exist
at the local, state, and national levels, but curriculum leaders are most
effective in their own communities. They are often tasked with identifying
needs and implementing new initiatives, such as interventions, which can transform
instructional practices and make positive impacts on student achievement.
Identifying issues and delving into their root causes in order to create an
intervention plan allows stakeholders to work together to ensure that
curriculum and educational policies are aligned with the needs of the students.
The goal of this
intervention project is for you, as a curriculum leader, to apply your critical
thinking and problem-solving skills when it comes to analyzing, planning, and
making data-driven decisions that will foster instructional improvement and organizational
change to support instruction. You will also better understand how you can
achieve personal and professional growth through the simulated process of
creating and implementing an intervention. You will complete this intervention
project in three separate assignments throughout the course.
This assignment is Part 1 of your intervention project, and
the goal is for you to explore local issues, complete a root cause analysis to
determine the problem statement and root cause, and then determine the topic
for your intervention. You will continue the project in subsequent weeks as you
complete Parts 2 and 3.
As a school district curriculum leader, you have been tasked
by senior leadership to determine an intervention plan to address a set of
issues happening in your school district. You will identify local needs,
perform a root cause analysis to determine the problem and root cause, and
propose the topic for your intervention plan. Note: You may create and/or make all necessary
assumptions needed for the completion of this assignment.

Title: Exploring Nature and Nurture: Applying Theories of Learning and Development in the Classroom
Respond to 3-4 items from the list below that demonstrates your engagement with the concepts and
principles we are learning in this unit. You will need to integrate the relevant ideas and principles
you are learning into your response for each item you select, to appropriately address the issues
and/or questions inherent in the item. Use classroom examples where possible to illustrate your
ideas and understanding.
Item 1 Considering the following statement, reflect on the degree to which nature (genes) and
nurture (the environment) might influence an individual’s sporting ability:
So, you’ve got your father’s blonde hair and your mother’s brown eyes – these are genetic traits. You
and your family are also very good at sport. Is it your genes or your environment that’s responsible
for your sporting ability?
Item 2 Critically review the theoretical perspectives of Piaget, Vygotsky and Information Processing
Theory as presented in the tutorials, and the readings. Choose one of these theories and reflect on
how that theory can be applied to your teaching via a hypothetical classroom example.
Item 3 The development of vision in infancy, including acuity, colour perception, depth perception,
face perception, and object perception, is essential to learning and development across the lifespan.
Our experiences in moving, exploring independently, and manipulating materials contribute to our
visual development. Briefly explain the implications this has for instructional guidance at the early
childhood level, and discuss whether it can also have implications for teaching older children and
students. You might like to include “epigenetics” to further your understanding of the nature/nurture
relationship for this particular item, as this will give you additional insights into how the environment
can affect genetic expression across development.
Item 4: How might scaffolding for the use of Vygotsky’s ZPD need to be differentiated for a student
who experiences generalised anxiety? Describe how you would approach this in relation to your KLA.
Item 5: a) Reflect on student wellbeing – What is wellbeing? Why is it important? What sorts of
things effect it and what are the important wellbeing risk factors?
b) On the basis of these initial reflections, provide a clear example of how the classroom teacher can
promote wellbeing.
Item 6: According to ACARA the Australian Curriculum has ‘personal and social capability’ as a
general capability to be carried out across all learning areas. ACARA, 2017 states that:
Students develop personal and social capability as they learn to understand themselves and others,
and manage their relationships, lives, work and learning more effectively….
Provide a theoretical analysis of why this statement is so relevant in classrooms and schools.
Criteria
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant core concepts, principles, and practices
2. Demonstrate how theories that inform learning and development are implemented in learning
and teaching contexts
3. Demonstrates the use of compelling statements and arguments to support a point of view.
4. Applies correct referencing when citing authors and listing references. -

Fostering Disciplinary Identity: Strategies for Engaging Diverse Learners in the Classroom As an English teacher, I would face the challenge of engaging students who may not see the value or relevance of studying literature and writing. To address this
The Case
“motivation to take on or engage with the identity as historian, scientist, mathematician, or literary critic/writer may be waning as students enter secondary schools with little evidence that disciplinary knowledge or practice is meaningful for their lives.” (Moje, 2008, p. 4)
Of course, we want our students to be excited about what we plan to teach but keeping students engaged in the learning process can sometimes be challenging. Think of the art student who claims ” I’m no good at art,” the math student who says, “I’m not a math person”, and the physical education student who says “P.E. just isn’t for me.”
The Prompt
Imagine these students are sitting in your class. Keeping this scenario in mind, describe the ways you could fold these learners into the norms and practices of your disciplinary community.
Make sure to address:
What discipline-specific practices could you engage your learners in to encourage them to try on new disciplinary identities?
How could you recognize and leverage learners’ participation in Discourses outside your own discipline? (consider: other school-based Discourses as well as outside-of-school Discourses)
How could asset-based approaches affirm this young person’s identity in your classroom? (integrate ideas from multiple asset-based approaches from your readings in your explanation)
Reply with a thorough response to the case, as it pertains to your discipline. Cite not only our readings but also at least one external source that is unique to your discipline. You can reference readings from this week or from previous weeks. Your case response should reflect critical thinking, careful consideration of a diverse set of learners, and a creative approach to problem-solving. The length should be around 300 words. -
