  • Title: Promoting Language Development in Early Childhood: A Brochure for Educators and Families

    Assessment Description
Language development is important for communication, expressing and understanding feelings, and lays the foundation for reading and writing skills once children are in school. It is important for early childhood special education professionals to understand the stages of language to be able to promote language development in the classroom and to help support families with encouraging language development at home.
Research and select an online tool that can be used to create a brochure or pamphlet to share with early childhood and early childhood special education professionals. Prepare an educational brochure about the five stages of language development in young children that could be shared with families of early childhood students. Include the following in your brochure:
Describe the stages of language development from birth to age 5 according to the information in the textbook.
Describe expressive and receptive language, how each develops, and how they relate to language development.
Examples of how teachers can support language development at each stage.
A description of 3-5 online resources families can refer to for more information on language development, including a link to each resource.
In a 250-500 word reflection, research and select two language acquisition models/theories to explain. Include the following for each model:
    Summarize the basic components.
Describe the commonalities and differences between the two models/theories.
Describe the language acquisition model/theory that resonates with the type of classroom you envision and that you expect to use in your classroom.
Describe the age/grade range for your ideal classroom and provide specific examples of why the selected model/theory would be most appropriate for your future classroom.
Support your brochure and reflection with a minimum of 3-5 scholarly resources.

  • Exploring Equality, Equity, Justice, and the Controversy of ChatGPT in Education

    Phase I
Purpose: This activity  explores the topics of EQUALITY, EQUITY & JUSTICE. These three terms show up often in your readings/videos as well as in public debates/discussions about education and official education policies and laws. Developing a clear and accurate understanding of the differences between the three can not only help you to assess policies & practices inside/outside of schools, but also help you to develop your own practices (no matter what field you plan to enter) that are more clearly/firmly rooted in meeting the goals of each. Additionally, we will be learning about the pros and cons of using ChatGPT (and other generative AI sites).
Indeed, the use of ChatGPT in the educational realm has been a controversial debate – with some finding it, and other AI programs, highly disruptive in learning processes and outcomes. Thus, the main purpose of this assignment is to reflect on the major implications of this artificial intelligence technology while exploring a central concept to this course: equality vs. equity vs. justice.
Instructions: Watch both Dr. Rose’s mini lessonLinks to an external site. and the YouTube video posted below. Think about a particular point that triggered your interest in the TED Talk video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOQbu_3M0_Q
Then, copy and paste the following prompt into ChatGPT: Act as a college student writing a reflection for an undergraduate level course. I want you to prepare a one to two paragraph response explaining difference between equality, equity, and justice. Then, identify a commonly-experienced issue or problem in schools and provide three solutions: one that is rooted in equality, one in equity, and one in achieving justice.
In a word document, copy and paste the ChatGPT response.
Highlight any confusing or incorrect information in the response, and
In BLUE TEXT add in your personal perspectives/opinions and connections to specific ideas from course content.
Then, in an additional 1-2 paragraph reflection,
discuss the advantages and weaknesses of the ChatGPT-generated response provided by the AI tool guided by answering ALL THREE of  the questions below. Please, provide details and examples from the ChatGPT created response to support your arguments.
    1. In your opinion, did the response from ChatGPT feel human or could you immediately identify it as a robot-generated response? Explain.
    2. Reflecting on the information you added in blue text, do you think ChatGPT enhanced your learning process, creativity and productivity or limited your learning and boxed you in creatively, hindering your productivity?
    3. Finally, share your overall perspective on the potential impacts of ChatGPT on education. Many point to its potential to transform education while others note the negative impact it’s had on academic integrity.
Where do you sit on these perspectives?
In other words, what are the major Pros and Cons to utilizing ChatGPT and other AI programs, in educational spaces?
How does this add to the conversation of equality, equity and justice?
    Phase II
Watch the Moral Development video and participate in a discussion with classmates on the discussion forum. Posts should reference the videos and the reading material and should demonstrate that you read and understand the assigned textbook chapter. https://online.fiu.edu/videos/?vpvid=3119a722-2692-4ab3-9e2e-ac1b9552eed7
(Mainly discuss thoughts from this video above and thoughts on the texts attached below)

  • Title: Exploring Computational Thinking Through Tinkering: Reflection on Hands-On Experience and Problem-Solving Strategies

Tinkering is about hands-on experiences, learning from failures, and unstructured time to explore and invent
Computational thinking is the process of formulating and solving problems by breaking them down into simple steps
There are four key skills in computational thinking:
Decomposition (the process of breaking down a problem into a number of smaller problems that can more easily be addressed).
Abstraction (the process of sorting through information to decide what is relevant and what is irrelevant)
Algorithmic thinking (Creating a set of ordered steps (sequencing) and then doing them in a particular order to solve a problem).
Pattern recognition (finding similarities and patterns in and among the problems).
    1)    What steps did you take to construct your object? (Algorithms)
    2)   What problems did you encounter as you constructed your object? How did you address each problem?  (Decomposition)
    3)   As you constructed your device, what resources & information did you use? Why? What materials & information were not helpful? Why? (Abstraction)
    4)   As you review the answers to questions #1-4, do you see any themes in your responses? (Patterns)
    5) Overall, what did you think about this activity? Do you think you understand the concepts of Computational Thinking?  How might you use it in your future classroom?

  • “Behavioral Interventions for Hyperactive Behaviors in Students with Learning Disabilities: A Literature Review and Application to a Specific Student”

The literature review is about behavioral interventions for students with learning disabilities/special needs to help hyperactive behaviors (hyperactivity behaviors such as calling out in class, constantly getting out of their seat and walking around the room, etc.). There needs to be 10 intervention studies and you need to find an intervention you plan to apply to a specific student student (one who struggles with hyperactivity struggles… please create a student profile to go along with these specific struggles)… Articles have to relate to students struggles… Use articles to pull strategies that will be used to help student… There also needs to be 2 one page double-spaced long summaries of 2 of the articles.

  • Title: Writing Instructional Objectives for a Lesson Plan

.Knowing what you want to teach by writing instructional objectives in advance of instruction is essential to helping students learn. Begin by identifying the state-mandated content standards related to the subject you will teach. Then identify one or two specific standards on which you will base a specific lesson.
You can find Texas’ curricular standards, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS, here.
If you are pursuing certification as an EC-6 generalist, be sure that your lesson plan is consistent with Texas’ Prekindergarten Guidelines if appropriate.
If you are pursuing certification in the field of special education, there are no specific TEKS related to special education. Instead, lessons for special education students are still aligned to the grade and content level TEKS in which the student is studying. Therefore, you may select any content area or grade level for which to align your lesson; however, be sure to identify the selected grade level and content area as well as identify that the lesson is specifically designed for learners with special needs.
Each educational objective should address at least one identified state standard. When writing objectives, a sufficient number of objectives should be constructed to address each identified state standard for your lesson. In this assignment, you will need to provide 3-5 objectives corresponding to 1 or more state standards that you identify.
For this assignment, follow these steps:
    1. Provide the grade level and subject in which the lesson will be used.
    2. Identify the state standards to which you will align. Include both the reference number of the standard and the full text of the standard. For example,
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Mathematics
Subchapter B. Middle School, Grade 6
    (b)(1)(C) (The student is expected to) select tools, including real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and number sense as appropriate, to solve problems;
    (b)(2)(C) (The student is expected to) locate, compare, and order integers and rational numbers using a number line;
    3. Review the list of verbs related to Bloom’s taxonomy from this course.
    4. Identify the verbs you want to use in writing objectives from each column on the list, based on the Bloom’s level at which you are seeking to measure learning. Each objective should have one verb as its focus. Label the objective’s verb by putting it in bold text.
    5. Ensure that at least two of your objectives are related to higher-order thinking (thinking at the two highest levels, Evaluating or Creating, of Bloom’s taxonomy).
Here is an example of a  concise, achievable, and measurable objective:
The student decides whether a sentence is simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex. (Evaluate)
    6. Label the level of Bloom’s taxonomy that corresponds to each objective and place the label in bold text.

  • Title: Introducing Myself and Selecting an Emerging Curriculum Theory for Final Project

Your first discussion board assignment for Module One has two main components. Take a moment to introduce yourself to the class and your instructors. A good place to start might be to highlight your educational or work experience and share some information about you or your family, your major at SNHU, and what you plan to do with your degree. Once you complete this part of the assignment, respond to this week’s prompt.
For the final project, you will select an emerging curriculum theory to guide your lesson plan development. As part of your discussion post, define which emerging theory you plan to use for the final project and explain why you chose it.
Respond to at least two classmates with substantive postings to complete this week’s discussion board assignment. Ask your peers three questions about their selected learning theory; these are parking-lot questions, so they do not need to be answered. They are a way to provoke thought about any challenges to applying the theory selected.
Here are examples of parking-lot questions you could pose to your peers:
The emerging theory is gamification. Using elements of game design in the classroom can engage, motivate, and reward students for complex problem solving and higher-order skills. Gamification can help students have authentic and complex learning experiences.
How would you, as a teacher, remain vigilant and use classroom gamification as a useful teaching tool rather than as a gimmick?
