Economic Development in Morocco: A Comparative Analysis with Peer Countries “Applying Economic Concepts: Analyzing the Economic History of [Assigned Country]”
This assignment is a report on
a country’s development process and current development status. Your assigned
country is Morocco.
Your report should be no less
than 750 words and no more than 850 words. Feel free to include any charts or
tables that you feel help convey your data or support your arguments (they do
not count against your word limit). All quotes, numbers, charts, etc. should
cite their source. Do not cite your sources on the main text; use footnotes or
endnotes, and a reference page at the end. Charts, footnotes, endnotes and
references do not count against the word limit.
I recommend the use of two
databases to help you in your report. You can find one of them on Canvas: the
database Real GDP per capita 1960-2019 contains information on countries’ real
GDP per capita (adjusted for PPP). The other one is the World Bank’s World
Development Indicators (WDI), and you can find it online at https://databank.worldbank.org/source/world-development-indicators
Besides economic indicators, it also includes outcomes on education, health,
the environment, etc. In addition, you are free to use, and cite, other data
and sources as you see fit. The report should describe and
evaluate the process of economic development for your assigned country compared
to a group of peer countries, starting in the 1960s or 1970s (depending on data
availability) to the current decade. You should ground your analysis in data
indicators and mechanisms/arguments we learned in class. The grading will be
based on the following: 1. Choosing peer countries: pick at least 2
countries that were comparable to your assigned country. This should be
countries that faced the same sort of opportunities and had similar access to
resources in the 1960s and 1970s. For most countries you will want to choose
neighboring or near enough countries, except when you have very large
countries. For example, if your country is Mexico, you would not compare it to
Belize, even though they are neighbors, but you would compare it to Brazil or
Argentina because they are large Latin American economies. On the other hand,
if your country is Belize, you could compare it to Nicaragua, because they are
relatively small Central American economies with similar opportunities. 2. The first paragraph should be an executive
summary of your main argument. How did your assigned country perform, in terms
of economic development, relative to the peer group? Better? Worse? Roughly the
same? What are the main points supporting this argument – these should come for
the analysis you performed below. 3. A paragraph discussing the evolution of
the country’s economic performance for the last 4 or 5 decades
containing a chart with its real GDP per capita over time (compared to two
other peer countries) and a mention to its average growth rate compared to
those two peer countries. Relate discussion to concepts we learned in class. Do
not waste words repeating numbers that readers can see in the chart. 4. A paragraph discussing the evolution
of its education outcomes, containing a table with at least two education
indicators at two points in time (60’s or 70s versus 90’s or 00’s) compared to
two peer countries (the same countries as above). Relate discussion to concepts
we learned in class. Do not waste words repeating numbers that readers can see
in the chart.
5. A paragraph discussing the evolution
of its health outcome, containing a table with at least two health
indicators at two points in time (60’s or 70’s versus 90’s or 00’s) compared to
two peer countries (the same countries as above). Relate discussion to concepts
we learned in class. Do not waste words repeating numbers that readers can see
in the chart.
6. A final paragraph with an analysis of
the country’s main successes, failures, and remaining challenges that were
not mentioned in previous paragraphs. These could be issues like inflation,
population, unemployment, inequality, corruption, environmental issues, etc.
Showcase concepts you learned in class for more points. In grading each of the
components I will reward concepts and arguments we learned in class relative to
other concepts you might be getting from reading about the economic history of
your assigned country in sites like Wikipedia, or by asking ChatGPT. -
Title: “The Dynamics of Multiple Equilibria in Football: Exploring the Impact of Financial Investments, Tactical Styles, and Major Tournament Wins”
This research paper is about multiple equilibria. I wish you to write in the context of football (soccer) so I am looking for someone with some expertise or interest in sports industry.
The essay encourages the use of R coding software. I can do that part so make some room for my input in the essay.
Here are some possible topics to approach this essay:
1. Impact of Financial Investments on Club Performance
Thesis: Investigate how financial investments lead to different performance equilibria among football clubs.
Data Points: Club revenues, transfer spending, wages, and performance metrics like league standings, points, and goals scored over several seasons.
Analysis: Use regression models or time series analysis in R to explore the relationship between financial inputs and club performance. Examine if there are thresholds of investment that lead to a step-change in club performance, indicative of a shift to a higher performance equilibrium.
EX) Football clubs that are recently taken over by Arabs (Man City, Newcastle)
2. Style of Play as an Equilibrium in Football Tactics
Thesis: Different tactical styles (e.g., possession-based vs. counter-attacking) could represent equilibria that teams gravitate towards based on their intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics.
Data Points: Match statistics such as possession percentage, pass accuracy, number of counter-attacks, goals from set pieces, etc.
Analysis: Perform a principal component analysis (PCA) or cluster analysis to identify distinct tactical styles and correlate these with match outcomes to see if certain styles tend to be more successful under specific conditions.
EX) Comparing English Premier League, Spain La Liga, and German Bundesliga
3. Economic Impact of Winning Major Tournament
Thesis: Winning major tournaments (e.g., FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League) can shift a club or national team’s economic and competitive position, creating new equilibria in terms of global popularity, financial power, and on-field success.
Data Points: Revenue streams pre- and post-tournament win, sponsorship deals, match attendance, and merchandise sales.
Analysis: Use difference-in-differences analysis or causal impact analysis in R to quantify the economic impact of winning and how it alters the club’s or national team’s equilibrium state.
EX) Argentina (World Cup), Real Madrid (Champions League)
If you could think of a better topic, feel free to pitch it in!! -

Title: The Future of Less-Developed Countries in the Age of Globalization: Examining the Concept of Development and the Role of the Developmental State
There is one question in this exam. Your answer should be around 2000 words (4 Word pages). Your answers should be clear, precise, and to the point. They should take the form of a sustained and systematic argument backed by reasoning and evidence from course readings and any other material you see useful. All your sources must be properly cited. “Inflation: Understanding the Threat and Taking Action” Inflation is a term that is often thrown around in economic discussions, but many people are unsure of what it really means and how it affects the economy. As a relative with no background in
Your space limit is 500 words. Many excellent papers are significantly shorter. Please

“The Great Recession and Financial Crisis of 2008-2010: A Comparative Analysis of Causal Accounts”
ECON 4695 Senior Seminar
Analytical Essay
We have now read several different accounts of the origins of the Great Recession and financial crisis of 2008-
2010.
Woods – the Austrian Account
Krugman, Pollin/Minsky – Keynesian Accounts
Foster & Magnoff – Marxian Account
Bernanke – the Fed’s Account
Several of these have offered a unique causal account of this historic economic recession and crisis, i.e.,
each one has identified one (or, in some cases, a handful) of chief culprits or “devils.”
Your 8-10 page essay should explain which of these accounts you find the most compelling. In doing
this, you will also need to explain why you find some of the other accounts less convincing. As
explained, you don’t need to cover every account—merely those you find most interesting or nearly
as compelling.
Finally, you should include one additional add-on paragraph at the end of your essay that reflects
back at your responses to the Initial Devils Survey, i.e., I want you to consider where you stood at
the beginning of this module and where you stand now—at the end. How did your views change (if
at all)?
Your essay should be double-spaced and must include page numbers. Use Calibri or Times New Roman 11-
point font. Use in-text references with page numbers, e.g., (Woods, p. X). Do not engage in long summaries
of the accounts—the bulk of your paper should involve critical reflection on these differing accounts.
Upload your MS Word document using the BB Submission by end-of-day on Friday, June 7th. -
