This course’s Final Project (worth 30% of your final grade), which is due on May 19th, consists in a Cultural Studies research project. It is inspired by the Public Humanities
1) Format :
1,200-word academic research paper
2) Remember that this is a Cultural Studies project, which means that it should address the interconnectedness between culture and politics (in a broad sense), as discussed in sessions 3-4
You can find it below in pdf
3) Choose one specific object of analysis (a “text” or cultural phenomenon):
A movie, TV show, or videogame
A song, music video, album, or artist
A short story, poem, or book
A social movement, artivism practices
Political communication, propaganda
Fashion
(Anything that can be considered “culture” or a “text” in Cultural Studies)
4) Your project should be centered around a thesis, that is, a new and original idea. Think of it this way: what do you have to say about your object of study that has not been said already? (And remember you must have received my approval on your Final Project proposal)
5) Your project should be current and relevant. Why does this object of study matter to us today? How can you connect it with present-day issues and discussions? Why should your audience care about it?
6) Minimum required number of cited sources: 4 (including at least 1 work/text from the course). You can use both academic and non-academic sources (keeping in mind that academic sources are much more solid and reliable). With your submission, make sure to include a written list of references, preferably in APA style.
7) AI policy: AI allowed only for brainstorming and proofreading. Presenting long AI-generated passages or ideas as if they were your own is not allowed (as it constitutes plagiarism and academic dishonesty). The work you submit should reflect your own ideas and research. Using AI-powered academic research engines (Elicit, ConnectedPapers) is allowed, but you should only cite sources which you have actually read (AI tends to “hallucinate” quotes and sources, which renders it unreliable). Dishonest uses of GenAI in this assignment will automatically result in a zero grade. Please contact me if you have any doubts about this policy.
Grading rubric:
Originality, critical thinking, effort (30%)
Meaningful connections with course contents, discussions, and materials (20%)
Currency and relevance (15%)
Quality of the sources and concepts used (15%)
Professionalism (overall presentation, following instructions, meeting deadline) (20%)

“Decolonizing the Stage: The Merrie Monarch Festival as a Response to Militarization, Colonialism, and Tourism in Hawaiian Culture”
This is for my American Studies class which is a writing intensive course. We had to choose a contemporary performance or event that
integrates decolonial responses by BIPOC or Minority communities. For this paper, I have chosen the Merrie Monarch Festival which is a Hawaiian event that takes place every year.
I have already done a draft going. Feel free to make changes and add on. If you want to, you can start the paper from scratch.
It is on a google doc. I made the doc so that it can be accessed by anyone with the link.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PXcKZg9cYLlG5ZGxk48IWC0oVHul3tZqOJuftgCfChg/edit
The requirements for the paper is as follows:
Analyzes the performance or event, and provides the
context for which the Indigenous performance is conducted, (the significance of
decolonial expression in the spaces it is performed, what issues it is addressing,
integration of non-traditional media or music, what form the performance takes…etc.)
and provide how these performances or practices enable Indigenous communities to
address militarization, colonialism, and tourism.
You will be required to interrogate at
least five of the readings from the semester in your final paper and have up to eight
sources cited throughout your work.
For the readings for this semester, I already used some in the draft. I will attach more to this but you don’t need to use all of them, but the ones you use, make sure to note on the doc. I need at 5 of these readings to be used. You may use more if you want. There are some sources attached to the doc already. You can add more sources on, whether it be a article, book, online somewhere, but don’t add so much more but a couple more. The last page where I have all the sources will be used as a annotated bilography so if you can do that as well, that will be helpful. That is where the readings and sources will go. Also, if you quote something, make sure to quote in the correct format because I don’t want to be called out for plagiarism.

“The Impact of Modernization on Traditional Cultural Practices in the Islamic Culture: A Critical Analysis”
What is culture? How does it impact various established cultural practices? Please choose one culture and hone in on one cultural practice. Consult four [4] critical resources, or more, from the FDU Library (not simply Wikipedia or Google) to consider ONE SPECIFIC element of a chosen culture in a deeper context. Do not present a broad general essay on the topic. Specific information must be included in the research thesis-driven paper that explicitly addresses some of the topics from the following list:
Religious and spiritual practices
Medical treatment practices
Forms of artistic expression
Dietary Selections, planning, and culinary practices
Nature—Conceptions and Relations to Nature and Natural Resource Management
Housing – Planning/Living Organization and Construction
Childcare practices
Conflict resolution
1. Where does the information for this cultural practice come from? Direct observation,
interviews, research databases with restricted access, and so on?
2. How has this cultural practice, event, or object changed over time, and what
circumstances or pressures have caused this change?
3. How does this cultural focal point relate to other unfamiliar or seemingly very different
parts of the same culture and different cultures?
4. How would you critique or limit the scope of the source of your information about this
cultural practice? [For instance, how do interviews limit the scope of your commentary?
How does a scholarly academic resource face constraints? What does each kind of source
overlook or fail to consider?]
CURRENT THESIS (MAY ALTER: Specify which culture in the thesis. I was thinking about the Islamic culture. If you don’t know much about the Islamic culture it’s fine. Any culture works)- The advancement of modernization has led to significant alterations in traditional cultural practices, impacting societies worldwide
