  • “Developing Critical Thinking Skills through Academic Writing: A Guide to Writing a Term Paper in APA Style 7th Edition”

    Each
student is required to write a APA Style 7th edition term paper that
consist of three (3) full pages of substance, not including the cover
    page and reference page.
    It is
more important that the 100 level student work on writing mechanics so
that you start to demonstrate critical thinking in your written
communications. Academic writing takes practice and is a process. The
only way to improve academic writing skills is through practice and
    writing papers.
    Each
paper must include at least three peer-reviewed journal articles that
support your analysis. Students must format in-text citations and
references in APA Style 7th edition.
Your work will be graded using the CJ Formal Written Assignment Final Paper Rubrics.pdf.  Make sure that you use the writing criteria as a checklist as you edit your paper and hit on all of the “Exemplary” areas of the rubric.
    MEAL Plan for Paragraph Construction.
There is an Example Student-Paper APA Style 7th edition.docx and
the Feel free to use the APA Style Example Paper as a template to help
you format your paper if you wish; however, you will not be graded on
your ability to properly format in APA Style.
    Students
will be introduced to APA Style formatting as you progress in your
studies; however, it is more important that you learn how to write in an
organized manner, have a good thesis statement, supporting paragraphs
that flow into the next paragraph, and start to demonstrate critical
thinking by analyzing the literature at this level of your education.

  • “Addressing the Root of Substance Use and Addiction in the Prison System: A Cognitive Therapy Approach” In this assignment, we will explore the concept of addiction and addictive behaviors as stemming from negative and painful core beliefs, as proposed by Aaron Beck in his

    Textbooks listed below
Beck,A. (1993) Cognitive Therapy of Substance Abuse. New York: Guilford Press
Early, K.E. (1996) Drug Treatment Behind Bars: Prison-Based Strategies for Change, Westport, CT.
    Praege.
Directions: Read Chapter 2 in Drug Treatment Behind Bars and Chapters 2 and 3 in Cognitive Therapy of Substance Abuse. Consider the following: Aaron Beck, the Father of Cognitive therapy, suggests in his book that addictions stem from addicted individuals not having a biological disease but rather being in possession of negative and painful psychological ‘core beliefs’, which are often inaccessible to immediate consciousness without the support and guidance of a therapist. These painful ‘core beliefs’ tend to be short rigid statements such as ‘I am unlovable’ or ‘I am a failure’. When these beliefs rise to the surface a system of addictive beliefs are activated. The addicted individual will start to believe there will be significant benefits to using their substance of choice. For example, the individual may believe ‘I cannot cope with this situation, if I have a drink/use a drug I will cope better’. These beliefs result in increased drink/drug cravings. Once craving begins, an individual may start to engage in ‘permissive thinking’, such as “I’ll just have one drink tonight to help me through this. I can handle drinking just this once.” Following permissive thoughts, the likelihood of drink/drug seeking and consuming behavior is greatly increased and the addicted individual may begin to use. Given the concept that addiction and addictive behaviors stems from these core beliefs, how has the current prison system perpetuates these beliefs? What are some policies that you suggest should be adopted by the criminal justice system to address the root of substance use and addiction? Include in your discussion, citations from the text.

Courts, OR Corrections. Cite at least three scholarly articles found in Criminal Justice databases. The

  • “The Ethical Dilemma of Use of Force: Examining Legal Standards, Community Legitimacy, and Officer Behavior”

professor instructions: To use force or not use force is one of the most important ethical decisions a police officer or correctional officer can make during his/her shift. For this paper, I’d like you to discuss how use of force decisions are made, what the legal standards are for using force, and/or how the use of force can damage a police department’s legitimacy within the community. You may also want to consider why some police officers use force, or are more likely to use excessive force, while other officers are not likely to do so.
You will need to support the assertions in the paper by using at least three sources. These can include: 1) textbook information on uses of force, implicit bias, patrol staffing experiments, etc. (Ethics in the Criminal Justice System / 2nd Edition Author(s)– Belshaw, Johnstone and Deboer. ISBN-13– 978-1524987503) 2) a news, research or internet article/publication related to your topic and from a reliable source, 3) studies published by a reliable source. The paper should be three to five pages, double-spaced, in 12 font. Provide a works cited page. Use APA format (7th edition) for student papers. The Title Page and works cited pages do not count as part of your page count.
What are some topics or issues to be considered while writing this paper (you don’t need to include all of this, just giving you some ideas)?
Consider the statutes and codified laws regarding the use of force. Also consider discussing some of the main Supreme Court Decisions (case laws) regarding the use of force and how that has impacted police officers.
Discuss how the use of force can be legitimate, or not. When illegitimate, excessive, force is used explain how that can cause the community to lose trust in the officers and the department.
Why are some officers more likely to use force, and to use excessive force, than others. Consider topics such as implicit bias and somatic markers. Also, you can include the results of some well-known studies, including studies done in Kansas City and San Diego to compare single officer cars to double officer cars. Also, there was a study done in New York regarding partner officers where one used deadly force and the other did not.
