In Module 7, our focus was on sampling strategies, especially probability-based sampling. The assigned readings offered some perspective on the generalizability of samples used to collect web-based survey data.
In this week’s discussion, I’d like to hear your perspective about the growing reliance on online data. First, given what we’ve reviewed about probability samples, do you think that samples taken from online platforms like MTurk are likely to be representative? Why or why not? Second, regardless of your position on this first point, what criminal justice-related subject(s) do you believe are more or less appropriate to study using web surveys?
We’ll continue our consideration of sampling, and we’ll also discuss web surveys a bit more, when we continue to Module 8

“Contemporary Investigatory Methods and the Criminal Investigative Process: A Critical Analysis”
Final Research Paper – (30 points)
Students are expected to write one concise and succinct research paper of 10 double-spaced pages of text (page numbers included) without going over the 12-page maximum. (Note: A cover page, abstract page and a work cited page do not count towards the 10-page minimum paper length requirement). The paper shall be written in APA 7th edition, Times New Roman 12-point with 1 inch margins (left, right, top and bottom) with indented paragraphs.
The paper should synthesize major ideas and themes outlined in the readings and lectures and reflect critical analysis. For this project, students will choose a contemporary investigatory method used by police and/or forensic scientists, using only articles from academic journals, official government publications, and reputable trade publications, to discuss in detail the entire criminal investigative process used in the method chosen, ensuring to incorporate major ideas and themes outlined in the readings and lectures.
EXAMPLE: A student may wish to write their paper on the use of mitochondrial DNA in sexual assault investigations, or perhaps witness/victim racial bias in viewing physical suspect line-ups.
The paper shall be prepared as a Microsoft Word document and be submitted via the Canvas system. Students are reminded that the term paper is NOT a group activity, but is considered an individual assignment; therefore, no collaboration of any kind will be permitted. Since this is a graduate school level course, the use of Wikipedia, or popular culture magazines such as People, Jet, the National Enquirer, etc. are prohibited sources of information.
Grading of the Term Paper (Maximum of 30 points)
10 points for Content and Development (all relevant points are covered and thorough development of
topic material)
5 points for Organization (a logical sequence is followed and organization of thought is apparent)
15 points for Format and Length (APA format 7th edition, a minimum of (10) references, and a minimum of 10
pages in length – excluding a cover page and the work cited page), Readability, Style, Punctuation,
Grammar, and Spelling (good sentence structure, professional and academic vocabulary).
The final paper is submitted to Turnitin. The acceptable Turnitin percentage is anything below 30% in the similarity report. A Turnitin plagiarism score of 30% and below shows that your paper is original. It also shows that your work is underpinned by enough sources, especially when well-cited and referenced. If your paper is over 30%, you need to edit and resubmit the paper. If the final paper is over 30%, you will receive a zero for the assignment. -
“Addressing Mental Health and Substance Abuse Issues in the Probation Case of Roger Brown” Introduction Roger Brown, a 30-year-old black male, has a history of mental health disorders and substance abuse. He was recently arrested for aggravated
Roger Brown
Case Study
Roger Brown is a 30-year-old black male arrested for aggravated assault. Roger was originally placed on 5 years’ probation for possession of crack cocaine in January 2022. Roger has a history of mental health disorders and has been on the mental health probation case load previously. Roger has a long history of being on and off his psychotropic medication. Roger was off his medication during the last incident when he was arrested. Roger is currently on a high level of supervision reporting twice monthly to probation officials. Roger has been reporting as instructed and available for home visits, as required.
Roger was hanging out at a local convenience store when he got into a verbal argument with another male at the store. The subject of the argument is unknown to officials at this time. The store owner came out and asked both men to leave the premises. Roger refused and began to argue with the store owner, as well. Roger became combative and struck the store owner with his backpack. The owner fell, hit his head on a concrete, and suffered a head injury requiring 25 stitches. Roger ran away from the scene. Roger was arrested a week later by police at his probation appointment.
Roger is currently employed as a construction worker (11 months) and living at home with his mother. Roger’s mother is currently unemployed. Roger’s mother reports he does well at home and does not give her any problems. She reports he pays most of the bills for there household. However, the neighbors report there are often loud arguments and the smell of marijuana coming from the backyard. Roger does not have a GED or HS diploma. Roger did complete a city sponsored program that helped him get the job in construction. Roger’s boss reports Roger is a good employee and has not missed a day of work. Roger is married but is currently separated from his wife and child at this time. Roger is also non-compliant with a child support order and in arrears for 6,000 dollars. Roger has had no contact with his wife or child.
Roger did test positive for THC and trace amounts of PCP when given a drug test at the probation department. This will be his first time testing positive for drugs. Roger has been going to see his MH counselor and psychiatrist but has been dishonest about taking his required medications. Rogers’s labs report he has not taken his meds in quite some time. What is your plan of action for Roger? You need to be detailed and address the specific issues outlined in his case. You do not have to address the specific law violations for this case study.
Use Chapter 6 as a resource for your plan for Roger.
Please fully explain your logic.

Using the principles of the scientific method and the interrelationship of the seven steps detailed in your text, describe what the castoff tells us about the scene. Include examples of castoff interpretation and how this may assist in recreating the scene. -
Title: Advocating for Ethical Strategies in Juvenile Justice: A Letter to the Judge for Jennifer Scott’s Risk and Needs Hearing Dear Honorable Judge, I am writing to you as the juvenile court probation officer for Jennifer Scott, who is
Frequently, a crisis could have been a risk factor that eventually led to the juvenile entering the justice system. Especially when crisis intervention is needed, it is very important to be able to identify ethical situations and ethical strategies associated with juvenile offenders.
Continuing in your role as a juvenile court probation officer and using the same client, Jennifer Scott, from the Week 2 assignment, examine ethical challenges that can impact supervision strategies by writing a 700 word advocacy letter that will be presented to the judge during a hearing on your client’s risk and needs. You may want to review her background again.
Specifically, your letter should do the following:
Summarize your client’s situation and major risk factors.
Identify 1 ethical challenge that affects your client.
Apply 3 ethical strategies that will address the challenge.
Examine the role you will have as an advocate.
Discuss how advocacy can be used for this situation.
Recommend actions that would lead to the desired change.

Title: Relapse Prevention and Aftercare Planning for Substance Abuse Clients
Part 1
What are the key factors that you should consider for relapse prevention when working with a Substance Abuse client?
PART 2
Select 2 techniques (from below) and describe how you would incorporate this into an “aftercare plan” for an inmate that you are working with as they prepare to transition out of the prison system and back to society. What steps would you take to support their successful transition back to the community?
Learning how to delay and distract in response to cravings, by engaging in constructive activities, writing (e.g., journaling), communicating with supportive others, going to meetings, and other positive means by which to ride out the wave of craving until it subsides.
Identifying dysfunctional ways of thinking (e.g., “permission-giving beliefs”) and getting into the habit of thinking and writing effective responses. For example, a patient learns to spot the thought, “I haven’t used in 90 days, so I deserve a little ‘holiday’ from my sobriety,” and to replace it with a thought such as, “What I really deserve is to keep my sobriety streak alive, to support my recovery one day at a time, including today, and to stop trying to fool myself with drug-seeking thoughts.”
Developing and practicing a repertoire of appropriately assertive comments with which to politely turn down offers of a drink (or other substance) from someone (e.g., “Thanks, but I’ll just have a ginger ale, doctor’s orders!”).
Learning how to solve problems directly and effectively, rather than trying to drown out a problem by getting impaired, which only serves to worsen the problem.
Becoming conversant in the “pros and cons” of using alcohol and other drugs, versus the pros and cons of being sober, and being able to address distortions in thinking along the way.
Practicing the behaviors and attitudes of self-respect, including counteracting beliefs that otherwise undermine oneself and lead to helplessness and hopelessness (e.g., “I’m a bad person anyway, so I might as well mess up my life by using.”).
Utilizing healthy social support, such as 12-step fellowship (12SF) meetings, friends and family who support sobriety, and staying away from those who would undermine therapeutic goals.
Making lifestyle changes that support sobriety and self-efficacy, including having a healthy daily routine, refraining from cursing and raging, engaging in meaningful hobbies, and doing things that promote spirituality and serenity (e.g., yoga).

“The Application of Scientific Foundations to the Study of Neighborhood Watch Programs”
In this module, we considered foundations of science: the theoretical frameworks that guide empirical research; the necessity of clear, specific, and logical hypotheses about effects; and the three elements (empirical association, time-order, and non-spuriousness) required to establish causality between variables. Hopefully you also had a chance to review the assigned journal article on neighborhood watch, which offers us a common frame of reference to talk about.
In this week’s discussion, reflect a bit on the application of our scientific foundations on the “problem” of neighborhood watch (NW). Why might different theoretical frameworks suggest different approaches to studying NW programs? Where might hypothesized NW effects differ, or even contradict one another? What, exactly, are we attempting to study, and what evidence would support or fail to support our hypotheses?
For the purpose of this discussion, it’s not necessary that you adhere strictly to the content of the assigned article, nor do you need to know the status of knowledge on neighborhood watch programs. It’s just an exercise to get us thinking about the translation of these abstract ideas to real-world criminal justice examples.
