  • “Creating an Intimate Dystopia: The Use of Editing Techniques in Children of Men”

    CHILDREN OF MEN
Do not use AI for any
part of your discussion. Please see the syllabus for the consequences of using
AI. (This includes Grammarly.) About AI. Students are not allowed to use
advanced automated tools (artificial intelligence or machine learning tools
such as ChatGPT, Google Bard, Claude, Grammarly, or other writing
    “helpers”) for this course.
Editing structures how we experience a
film; sometimes, less is more. In
Children of Men, one could argue that Alfonso Cuaron embraces the idea of
“less is more,” to create an unusual sense of reality; viewers are
intimately immersed in a dystopian, not-too-distant future. Identify and
discuss two editing techniques used in this film that help create an almost documentary
feel, that continuously ratchets up the suspense and keeps us in the middle of
    the action.

  • Title: Persuasive Speech Outline: Institutions and Their Impact on Society

    Instutions
Typed Outline: Submit a 2-page typed outline in the correct format.
Integrate five sources indicated in bold and parentheses where citations are
planned during the speech (I will be given out loud). Refer to the (example
outline) provided below. Use the outline as a template and format your speech
outline like the example that I mentioned. Unlike informative speech, where
you just give information about your topic, (persuasive speech) requires that
you choose one side of an issue and PERSUADE the audience to agree with you. End
the outline with a quotation like the example outline.
    (Remember you’re not telling both
sides of the story but you’re choosing one side of the story and you’re going
to stick with that and persuasive the audience to agree with you. For example,
Martin Luther King speech was one of the greatest speeches). The topic must be
convincing to us, like you believe in it. Just like Martin Luther King said (I
have a dream!) and he did not say (I think I have a dream). It can be a dramatic
speech with emotions or a sad speech. Please write a topic that is caring and
can be deliver with some element of passion with emotions, and sadness. Avoid
the following topics, balanced budget, federal deficit, capital punishment,
abortion, homophobia, transgender, skin color, discrimination, racism.

  • Intercultural Interaction: Exploring Similarities and Differences through Conversation

There are many factors that separate cultures, ethnicities, and races. While it is true that history, language, religion, food, etc., separate us, there are many factors in which we can find commonality with individuals that come from an ethnic group different than ours. To grow our capacity to communicate cross-culturally it is important that we explore those similarities (while being mindful of the differences) and interact with individuals that live in different cultural realities that our own. When we learn about someone else’s cultural realities and reflect on how those realities relate to our own, we can become better communicators.
This Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment is an opportunity to interact with an individual from a different culture than your own. Make sure that you research that particular culture in order to develop insightful and clear questions of aspects of that culture that you would like to explore. During the conversations, note the similarities and differences between your culture and that of the interviewee as that will form the basis of your analysis. The Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment will include an account of the features of the culture of the interviewee and an analysis of the similarities and differences.
    Instructions
Spend 1-2 hours with an individual from a culture other than your own. You must investigate the culture and formulate questions to pose to the individual prior to the interview and as part of your preparation for the meeting. The Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment will focus on the various features of the interviewee’s culture as well as the cultural similarities and difference between the student and the interviewee.

Questions to Ponder Before and After Reading and Watching the Materials on Haiti
What medium is it (newspaper, movie, TV show, podcast, etc.)?
What limitations, if any, does this medium experience as a content provider?
What is the name of the media source?
What country(ies) or region(s) does this source cover?
In what language(s) does the media deliver its content?
    Who owns the media?
    Who controls it?
What is the mission of the media outlet?
    What information/programming does it provide?
    Who is the audience?
In your discussion thread responses be sure to compare and contrast the message, the tone, the production quality, the audience, and other factors that may impact the efficacy of the production.
NOTE: Move beyond my questions. Think and analyze. Let’s go!!!! In this discussion thread, I am more focusing on your discussion and comparison and contrast of these two media sources and their take on Haiti. Move beyond simply regurgitating “facts”  you found on the internet.

    NY Times Report on Haiti

A snapshot from the article: In the drowsy hours of a December afternoon, eight American Marines strolled into the headquarters of Haiti’s national bank and walked out with $500,000 in gold, packed in wooden boxes.
They drove the loot by wagon to the shore, past American soldiers in civilian clothes who kept watch along the route. Once at the water, they loaded the boxes and sped to an awaiting gunboat.
The gold was in the vault of a Wall Street bank within days.
The operation took place in 1914 — a precursor to the full-scale invasion of Haiti. American forces took over the country the following summer and ruled it with brute force for 19 years, one of the longest military occupations in American history. Even after the soldiers left in 1934, Haiti remained under the control of American financial officers who pulled the country’s purse strings for another 13 years.

  • “Social Media and the Law: Examining Landmark Cases Involving Regulation and Use of Online Platforms”

Pick a court case that involves the regulation or use of social media and research it. Specifically, look for cases that address social media directly and not just tangentially. For this assignment, the following cases will work well:
    Gordon & Holmes v Love (2016)
    Gonzalez v Google (2022)
Mahanoy Area School District v BL (2021)
    Packingham v North Carolina (2017)
RS v Minnewaska Area School District (2012)

  • “Fundraising for a Cause: A Comprehensive Plan for a Non-Profit Organization”

The overall length of this entire assignment is 6-8 pages, not including the required cover page and reference list. Due to the nature of this assignment, no abstract is needed.
    Instructions
In the First Part of this assignment, the student will write a 3-4 paged paper identifying and researching a non-profit organization.
The paper will include sections on the
    • Organization’s mission
    • Brand image
    • Competition for donor contributions.
This part of the paper requires sources that are cited in the current APA format.
In the Second Part of this assignment, the student will create a fictitious fundraising event for the non-profit organization. The total page count for this part of the document should be 3-4 pages. Describe the event you are planning in detail. Components include the following:
    • What, where, and when will the event take place?
    • What will the program entail, if you have speakers and music as a part of this event?
    • The budget should be estimated based on what online research says the approximate cost for an event of that nature would cost (e.g., the venue, food, entertainment, decorations, transportation, and the like).
    • How much will tickets to the event cost?
    • How much money do you anticipate raising?
This part of the document should be three to four pages in length. It should look like it could be presented to a client. In sum, the event could be something such as a gala, a golf tournament, a dinner for donors, a silent auction, or the like. The purpose is to put on an event that will professionally represent the organization and garner money for the group.
It cannot be an event the organization has done in the past or is doing at present. The event must be unique and created by the student himself or herself. It must be an event that requires a lot of planning. It CANNOT be something like a car wash or lemonade stand. Finally, the event must be described in detail, including a hypothetical budget. The student may NOT say that everything is being donated, so there is no budget.

  • “Breaking the Habit: Conquering Crutch Words for Clear and Powerful Communication”

using the knowledge you’ve gained from the link for the article and this chapter, answer the following:
Consider any crutch words or phrases that you use. What do you say repetitively? Are any these crutch words considered jargon or slang?
Why do you believe you use the “crutch words” that you do? Do you perceive your “crutch words” impacting your ability to clearly communicate? How does using these words impact the level of power in your language?
What strategies can you use to eradicate frequent crutch words? How might these strategies help your language become more powerful?
Your initial post should be at least 250 words
then respond to two people with 200 words
1- I think that I use crutch phrases more often than crutch words. Especially in typing when there is a specific number of words that need to be used it is easy to throw a bunch of “fluff” into your piece of writing. My preferred crutch phrases include maybe, I guess, either way and whatever works. I think I use these to try and remain neutral and not have to make decisions. I also use a lot of filler adverbs; my favorites include the words: definitely, for sure, to be honestor honestly. I don’t use a lot of social media so all the new slang and phrases that come off of TikTok, for example, I am oblivious to. I don’t think any of what I previously listed are considered slang, just filler and fluff. I think a lot of people when speaking use “uh” or “um” or some variation of that sound when they need a moment to think. Opposite of that, when I was in 6th grade and 8th grade I had the same English teacher, I loved her she was the best, anyhow, she had a “clicker” and whenever a student would use “um” or “like” she would click her clicker and count how many times you used it during your speech. Instead of saying anything I try and just pause and breath briefly. I think how adamant my 6th/8th grade teacher played an important role in how I speak and use language. She made us make a conscious effort to think about what we were saying and how it came out.
2-I use crutch words all the time. The one crutch word I use repeatedly is umm. If I had to say I would think umm is a slang word, but I could be wrong. An Another word I use a lot that is a slang word is babe.
I use this word all the time because my mouth can not keep up with my brain so I will forget what I am trying to say so I have to literally think on what I am trying to say. Another reason why I use that word is because I get nervous because I do not like talking in front of people. I use babe all the time because that is what I grew up hearing, so I adapt to it, so I call my girlfriend that also.
The strategy I use to not say umm is before I start talking, I think about what I am trying to say, and I take a deep breath and then I talk. When I do that, I do not mess up and I can get everything I want to say out. I did not develop that strategy on my own, but my first speech teacher taught me that and I have been using it ever since.
I have not developed any strategy for babe because I just use it all the time. I do not know what other word to use except her name to fix it. If I use her real name, she is going to be mad at me and look at me like I am crazy.
