  • “Unpacking the Evolution of My Relationship: A Sociological Analysis” “The Importance of Conceptual Understanding in Analyzing Relationship Development: A Critical Review of “D” Papers”

    Overview
Use the following along with the attachments (assignment sheet and examples) to help shape your understanding of the final paper.
    Instructions
The paper is a 5-8 page paper that makes will be used to assess your comprehension of the course material and your ability to leverage that knowledge in understanding a relationship in your life.  Be sure to read over the attachment and look at examples of previous papers to understand what you will need to do for this assignment.  This is the most formal of the writing assignments of this term.  I might be necessary for you to invest some time with the writing center to produce the highest quality of work that you can.
There are 2 sections for the final paper:
    Section #1: Historical Overview
    Section #2: Analysis
The basic requirements of this assignment are covered in this video:
Please, send me an email and let me know if you are having any problems with this assignment.
All concepts from lectures & chapters in your book are your primary resources. Also, you may use outside material from other classes/books if it helps in developing an accurate understanding of the relationship; regardless, make sure you identify the language (bold) and use in text citation protocol. Do NOT spend all your time/space simply unfolding the narrative history of your relationship. This does not demonstrate your competency of the course material. You have to clearly and accurately use concepts, terms, and labels to help unpack how the relationship grew in order to score well on this paper.
    Logistic Details:
    a. This is a formal paper so feel free to use a Title Page.
    b. The length should be between 5-8 pages not including the title page
    c. Formatting should be fairly standard: 1” margins max., 1.5 spacing max., 12pt max., Times New Roman (or similar) Font. If you have questions about this part stop by the writing center or the computer lab and ask them to show you how to set this up.
    Example Papers:
    F+S w.citation – Father-Son relationship
    BF+GF w.citation – Boyfriend-girlfriend relationship
Once you have completed the assignment:
Save the file as a PDF and then submit the PDF file by using the “Add a File” button below and clicking on the blue Submit button once the file is uploaded.
    Evaluation:
Grading schema (100pts total): I am primarily looking at the accuracy and application of concepts, but also how you synthesis, structure, and explore the depth of your ideas.
    Basic Grade Matrix:
“A” paper’s reveal the different concepts themes that weave together to help make sense of the relationship’s evolution in a clear and insightful way. It will incorporate course concepts into your story in a way that reveals the how and why of the relationships progression. These papers move beyond simply labeling the story with concepts, but it will unfold a rational for understanding the progression of the relationship by integrating various (macro and micro level) concepts into the story.
“B” paper’s tend to be good at applying necessary and appropriate concepts to the story of the relationship, but fall short in the ability to develop a clear and accurate understanding of the evolution relationship (i.e. the ‘why’ of the relationships development is a bit incomplete). These papers usually lack enough integration of concepts causing the explanation to be a bit unclear or underdeveloped.
“C” paper’s can be a result of 2 things: First, these papers tend to focus on telling the relationship story, but are weak in the identification of concepts, and therefore do not have the concept application necessary to reveal the process concerning ‘why’ the relationship is developing. Second, any paper that does not meet the minimum page requirements will cap their grade at a ‘C’ even if they have an ‘A’ analysis up to that point. If you find yourself outside the page requirements then add another turning point and unpack that moment. There is no reason to fall short as any relationship that you are part of has enough to unpack to fill 5-8 pages.
“D” paper’s might have a good summary of the relationship and stories, but overall are lacking concepts and their application therefore not really revealing the relationships development. There might be obvious inaccurate terminology to glaring gaps in the explanation of the story. D papers are usually reflective of serious issues in the ability to demonstrate adequate levels of competent and insightfulness.

  • Title: “The Power of Volunteering: Why You Should Get Involved in Your Community”

This assignment will examine your mastery of persuasive speech delivery. You will select a persuasive topic and attempt to advocate for your topic in a 5-6 minute speech. A total of at least two outside sources are required to back-up the claims made throughout your speech. You will use Monroe’s Motivated Sequence (MMS) to structure your persuasive speech: Attention, Problem, Solution, Visualization, Action. There are several steps to this assignment.
Step One: Pick a Persuasive Speech Topic.
As soon as possible, pick a persuasive topic you would like to create your speech on. Choose your topic with your own interests and your knowledge of the audience in mind. However, you will not be allowed to pick the following persuasive topics:
Persuading the audience to stop smoking cigarettes.
Persuading the audience to not drink and drive.
Persuading the audience to adopt and not shop their pets.
Persuading the audience to not text and drive.
Persuading the audience to exercise more.
Persuading the audience to not support fast fashion.
    Persuading the audience to recycle.
Persuading the audience to eat healthier.
Persuading the audience on anything political (e.g. 2nd amendment, abortion, global warming, marijuana etc.)
Step Two: Research and Collect Data for Arguments.
After choosing a persuasive topic, begin to research it and collect supporting materials to use and include in your speech. As you know, the material you include in your speech needs to be credible and recent. Therefore, find research that has been published from 2013-2024. You are required to verbally cite once in the Problem Step and once in the Solution Step. You may use the Internet, library, and journals when finding reliable data for your speech.
Step Three: Outline and Create your Speech.
While you research, you will also need to outline and construct your persuasive speech. Refer back to the MMS lecture slides for guidance. Write your outline using full sentences and paying attention to the correct MMS format and include a reference/work cited page of the sources you include in your speech. The outline will need to include the five steps of MMS: Attention, Problem, Solution, Visualization, Action.
