  • “Application of Communication Theories: Exploring Four Key Concepts”

    Instructions coming from the Teacher:
What I would like for you to do is to answer FOUR out of the following five
questions in the document attatched.  Each one answered is twenty-five
percent of the grade.  A typical
answer in total will be somewhere in the 4-6 double-spaced page range.  Because a lot of the information is right in
front of you, I am looking for things put into your own words, your
amount of detail and also your ability to apply this information to different
    examples.  Repeating examples in the
book, power points, or even the videos would not be original thoughts by you
and would not be considered truly “A” material.   Sloppy or rushed writing (typos and
grammatical/imprecise writing) being you have time (basically at least three days)
to polish your answers up will hurt your grade as well.  Your answers MUST be turned into me
via email by Midnight at the end of the day on Saturday, June 15 th..
    I
might be able to answer general questions, but obviously I can’t give too much
with specifics, certainly nothing more than a general “Am I on the right track
with this?” question.  Good luck with it!
Nothing should be AI-detected, the teacher is looking for those kinds of things.
Don’t use Theories: 2. EXPECTANCY VIOLATION or INTERACTION ADAPTION Theories
Each Theory should be a page long or less, and then move on to the next theory

  • “Culture at Work: An Analysis of Communication Practices Through the SPEAKING Mnemonic” Culture at Work: An Analysis of Communication Practices Through the SPEAKING Mnemonic Introduction Communication is an essential aspect of human interaction, and it is influenced

    Hide Assignment Information
    Instructions
This journal entry is a more general one and responds to the claim that as we communicate we speak culturally. What practice of communication do you knowingly do that puts your culture on display? Using the SPEAKING mneumonic developed by Dell Hymes describe this practice of communication. Using the participants point-of-view identify some of the meanings operating in the practice.
    i) A review and summary of the relevant literature (2-3 pages)
Presented in this class is a general theory of communication in culture and more specific activity
theories of facework, speech acts, person-referring forms, relational dialectics, cultural terms for
talk, norms and rules, and narrative. In your paper discuss, at a theoretical level, what any of
these theories of communication are. Use the readings assigned to that specific section of the
class to help with your review—you may go outside of the class readings should you wish to.
    Cite your sources!
(ii) Data collection and its presentation (1-3 pages)
The data you will collect in this class will be conducted primarily through participant
observations and interviews. Simply put, you will observe and document communication in its
naturally occurring context. Document a short transcript of a conversation (it need not be any
more than 3-4 exchanges in an ongoing piece of interaction). The primary tool for organizing and
presenting your observations is through the Hymes’ (1972) SPEAKING mnemonic. Note in your
presentation of the transcription the setting or the scene, the participants, their ends or goals in
view, the sequencing of the interaction, the key or emotional tone, the instruments or medium of
communication (spoken, mediated, nonverbal, etc), the associated norms or rules, and whether or
not the interaction was part of a larger genre for communication.
(iii) An analysis of the data that examines features of a culture at work in communication
    (2-3 pages)
Use the orientation you have developed in (i) to make a systematic analysis of this data in (ii).
Ask yourself how the data reveals a culture at work? By culture we can mean any number of
things: nationality, ethnicity, regionality, social class, gender (and all of its non-binary forms),
sexuality, patterns of power, intimacy, solidarity, deference, etc. If your observation is one of
intercultural communication how might the phenomena play into a sense of conflict, or
    breakdowns in communication?
Each section of the journal entry is worth 10 pts each for a total of 30pts. Complete three of them
for a maximum total of 90 points. Each journal entry is due at the completion of the materials
associated with the activity theory in question.
Please follow APA or MLA writing guidelines.

You are the Communication Specialist at a company that employs about 50 people. A long-term employee is about to retire. The CEO wants to put out a statement to employees announcing this retirement and to invite everyone to a reception honoring this employee. She has drafted a statement and would like you to make any necessary revisions. She values your opinions and trusts your judgment. The draft of her statement is below:
Jeffrey Hillinger came to work at Platinum Technologies in 1992. In fact, he was the 4thperson hired when we were just starting out. He started as a technician and worked his way up to Chief Technology Officer in 2012. As you know, he stepped down from this position for mental health reasons in 2016, but he has continued to serve our company in a less stressful position ever since. Nevertheless, his contributions to Platinum Technologies have always been valued.
Therefore it is with a heavy heart that I announce that Jeffrey will be retired from PT effective at the first of the month. He has decided that he needs to focus on his health. While I wasn’t really looking forward to hiring anyone new right now, I accept his choice, and will do what is best for the company.
To honor Jeffrey and his many years of dedication to PT we will have a reception after work next Tuesday in the conference room on the first floor. Refreshments will be served. Out of respect for Jeffrey and his condition, alcohol will not be served.
    Please join us!
    Sincerely.
    Camille Martin
    CEO, Platinum Technologies
