  • Title: Exploring Themes and Effects in [Series Name]: A Critical Analysis

A brief introduction, introducing the series and providing a short summary of the season. This should be no longer than half of a page. (2 points)
A body section, divided into the three themes that you choose to discuss. Each theme should be labelled, and should include:
A brief summary of what you saw related to that specific theme (representations). Feel free to get creative here. You can talk about character interactions, use of music, setting, etc. You should first identify some overall patterns, and then rely on specific examples from the series. (2 points for each theme)
A discussion of the potential effects on viewers/audience members that may result after watching this series using a theory we’ve discussed in class. You must first briefly define the theory in your own words, and then apply the theory to your observations in part a. Please see the “Writing about Theories” document for assistance with this section. (4 points for each theme)
A brief conclusion, summarizing your points, ending with a general comment or assessment of whether this series is realistic/positive/etc. (3 points)

  • Title: Corporate Social Responsibility and Globalization: A Case Study of Patagonia

Mainstream corporations often engage in corporate social responsibility to attempt to reduce harm that their industry has brought to a sector (i.e., Patagonia trying to protect the environment by changing manufacturing practices). Patagonia, Honda, Toms, and Lego are just a few of many examples of companies with strong corporate responsibility programs. In this homework assignment you will apply what you learned about globalization and CSR to analyze a company (from our class discussion or otherwise) that is striving to upend some of the damage that multinational corporations have caused to the environment, consumers, and the market.
Object of Analysis (300 words + 2 images): Briefly describe one or two of the strategies/interventions that the company you have selected is using to ‘interrupt’ the damages brought about by their industry (e.g., outdoor equipment, beauty, clothing, etc.) to the environment, consumers, markets, etc. Demonstrate your research into the company and its efforts by discussing how the problems came to be (i.e., why are toxins allowed to be ingredients in beauty products), and why the company is striving to move beyond the laws (sometimes, even striving to change them) to make a significant improvement. Use two images (sourced from the web, with a link or a source) that demonstrate these branding efforts.
Theory (150 words): In your own words, very briefly explain ‘globalization’ and ‘corporate social responsibility.’
Application & Analysis (400 words): How do ‘globalization’ and CSR jive with the example you selected? How (if at all) do these efforts of the company illustrate the company is considering VUCA factors? How does this company illustrate a commitment to multicultural and/or cognitive diversity? Who is the leader of the company, and how do they frame the company’s impact on globalization? (In your answer, demonstrate your understanding of globalization, crisis, and CSR by referencing the text and lecture materials).
Conclusion (150 words): Based on your analysis, answer the following: does CSR ‘do good’ in the world, or should the responsibility of corporations only be to increase the value of their shareholders? Does remote work benefit the world? Ultimately, do you believe that globalization is a force for good or evil in the world?
    Formatting:
    Proper spelling, grammar, and syntax
    Double-spaced
    Typical font (12 point)
Include a word count for each section
You must fall within a 15-word range for each section. Failing above or below a 15-word range, or failing to include a word count, will result in a 5-point deduction per section.
Label each section corresponding to the homework assignment

  • “Applying Interpersonal Theories to Past Episodes: A Self-Reflection” Introduction In this paper, I will be applying the theory of Uncertainty Reduction to a past interpersonal episode in my life. Uncertainty Reduction Theory, developed by Charles Berger

Self-Reflection or Short Paper Three: This paper is once more worth fifteen percent of your grade and should be a typical length of 4-6 pages (again, I must stress, this a typical length. You might increase your chances of a better grade with more detail in your stories or especially analysis in why you think things happened like they did, etc.) This final paper is due by Midnight, Saturday June 22nd.
Choose any theory we will have covered between now and Saturday, June 22nd. That means your choices are any of the theories you have not covered already in your first two papers, PLUS Uncertainty Reduction Theory or Stage Theories (Chapter 25–3rd Edition), Narrative Theories (Chapter 19—2nd edition), Critical Approaches (Chapter 14—2nd edition), Critical Race Theory (Chapter 19–3rd Edition), and Queer Theory (Chapter 22—3rd Edition). Analyze one of your past interpersonal episodes on each theory. You may also reflect on an observed interaction episode (real life or from media) for this purpose.
Describe the theory first (show your understanding by identifying the major concepts, relationships among the concepts, and the critique of the theory (35 percent of the paper); describe your episode (20 percent); critically apply the theory to the understanding of the episode (35 percent); and provide the moral of the story (i.e., the key point that you have realized from this reflection and/or what you would do in similar future interactions; 10 percent). These papers are due on the assigned day by Midnight. See if there are ways you can expand this paper from the first two to add more details and insight! Let me know if there are any questions SOONER rather than later.

  • “The Impact of Social Media on Perceptions and Communication”

Consider each prompt and respond to all.
How do you form perceptions about others when you primarily rely on social media to make these perceptions? What do you focus on?
How accurate do you think your perceptions of others are on social media and how do you know? What types of errors do you believe you might commit when forming perceptions online?
While using social media, how can perception/attribution errors impact the perception of others and negatively affect communication?
Your initial post should be at least 250 words
then respond to a classmate with 200 words
1- How I form my perception on someone on social media is the first thing I look at is pictures. If the person is dressed in a suit, then that person is very sophisticated. If a guy posts a body picture, then that could mean he loves to workout. Same goes for the females but there is one thing I look at is when females stick out their butt then I know she could be more on the other side. The next thing I look at is what they post. What they post is who they are in my opinion. You post stuff because either you found it funny, or you truly believe in it.
My accuracy on this is pretty accurate. I know it is accurate because when I talk to them, I can tell. I can also tell when my friends talk about them. It’s not hard to tell how someone is. Look at their post and they will tell you a lot about the person. I did not have any errors in my perception of someone. My strategy has always worked for me, and I haven’t run into any errors yet so that is a good thing.
Having the wrong perception can negatively affect you on your communication with the person. Just because a person is wearing a suit in their pictures does not mean they have a really nice job. They could be wearing it for a nice occasion. That is why I said you must look on what they post because that will tell you.
2- i  form perceptions about others using social media based on their posts. I look at things like what they are doing in the posts, or the comment that is associated along with the social media post. I can also look at what, or who they are following to see what kind of things they like or what kind of group they might belong to.
I don’t follow anyone that I don’t know personally or have met in real life, of course excluding celebrities or organizations I might like. But if I were to go off solely on their social media, I don’t think that my perception of them would be that accurate, because I am different from other people as I have different likes and dislikes. So, if I go just off what I can see on social media I’d be biased towards my own likes and dislikes and can lead me to have a negative perception on someone without knowing more about them. Some errors that I might commit when forming perceptions online is focusing on only one thing rather than the full picture. I also probably form a perception on someone too quickly if I only see them online as I am missing a whole different side to them. As they can only show the side of them that they want to.
Perception errors can impact communication negatively according to the primacy effect, which is where our first impression of a person can overshadow impressions later. I feel this can happen a lot with social media, as you may think a person is going to be a certain way because of what they post or comment about on their social media account.

  • Exploring Media through Theories: A Creative Analysis

    This assignment will consist
of four entries, each with a maximum of 500 words. This assignment will ask you
to apply one of the theories that we explore in class to a book, film, tv
episode, podcast, song, game, or other type of media that you engage with in
    your everyday life.

a strong understanding of the theories through your analysis of the chosen
    media/
    In the spirit of
exploration, you will also experiment in print media forms in the completion of
this assignment. Your portfolio should demonstrate some creative exploration in

  • Perceptions of the COVID-19 Vaccine: What Influences Our Views and Will They Change? Vaccines have been a topic of much discussion and controversy in recent years, with the COVID-19 vaccine being at the forefront of public discourse.

Write a paper of no more than one and a half pages about your perceptions of vaccines. Break your writing into paragraphs. You must only discuss one vaccine. For example, you may choose to focus only on the COVID-19 vaccine. The point is to focus only on one vaccine, then develop your argument about what informs your perceptions about it, and whether your perceptions are likely to change, why/why not. Make sure that you explain the concept of perceptions. Your paper must also include references to two academic studies that have been published about perceptions regarding vaccines (find papers/academic studies that discuss how people perceive vaccines). Do not use Google though you may use Google Scholar. Do not just use the first results that come up. Do not use information you find from websites that are non-academic. Teach yourself about the different sources of information you use. Which information sources are credible and which are not? In general, be suspicious of blogs and other .com site. Try to use information from sources that include the words journal/journal of/studies etc.
To restate, you must refer to peer reviewed academic papers – not newspapers, not blogs, not political party websites, not online newspapers, not fake news sites, not Wikipedia, not television stories, ONLY PEER-REVIEWED ACADEMIC ARTICLES FOUND IN ACADEMIC JOURNALS.  Even if you found a newspaper article through a library search that article is still a newspaper piece therefore, do not use it. Only use what you find in an academic journal. The New York Times, Huffington Post, Washington Post, Fox, CNN and others are all sources you should avoid even if the article/story mentions a professor. There is a lot of research that has been done and published about vaccines. You need to be creative in how you search and in how you use your search terms. When citing sources, please integrate them properly into your discussion. In the folder I have included a resource about research integration in writing. Please read it. Do not just copy and paste a quote from a source. Introduce the quote, use proper punctuation, and explain the quote. Follow the guidelines provided.
Our Librarians are very helpful. However, you can also access the library by clicking on the library icon, which will take you to the library page. When on the library page, click on ‘find articles’ and then select ‘academic search complete’. You will then be prompted to input your login details. You can also check Google Scholar, not Google.
Your paper must be double spaced and left justified. The two studies you cite in your paper must appear under the heading ‘works cited’ at the end of your paper.

  • “Exploring Cultural Realities: A Cross-Cultural Conversation”

There are many factors that separate cultures, ethnicities, and races. While it is true that history, language, religion, food, etc., separate us, there are many factors in which we can find commonality with individuals that come from an ethnic group different than ours. To grow our capacity to communicate cross-culturally it is important that we explore those similarities (while being mindful of the differences) and interact with individuals that live in different cultural realities that our own. When we learn about someone else’s cultural realities and reflect on how those realities relate to our own, we can become better communicators.
This Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment is an opportunity to interact with an individual from a different culture than your own. Make sure that you research that particular culture in order to develop insightful and clear questions of aspects of that culture that you would like to explore. During the conversations, note the similarities and differences between your culture and that of the interviewee as that will form the basis of your analysis. The Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment will include an account of the features of the culture of the interviewee and an analysis of the similarities and differences.
    Instructions
Spend 1-2 hours with an individual from a culture other than your own. You must investigate the culture and formulate questions to pose to the individual prior to the interview and as part of your preparation for the meeting. The Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment will focus on the various features of the interviewee’s culture as well as the cultural similarities and difference between the student and the interviewee.
The Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment must include:
    • The Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment must be 3-4 pages long (no more than four).
    • The Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment must be in current APA format (including, but not limited to an abstract, introduction, conclusion, and in-text citations)
    • The Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment must include at least three (3) references from the course readings, the Bible, and pertinent outside sources.
    • The Intercultural Interaction Conversation Paper Assignment must reflect a Christian worldview demonstrated by the use of at least one reference from the Bible.

  • Title: “Exploring Interpersonal Communication in Film: A Multi-Theoretical Analysis”

Select a film and examine at least four theories of interpersonal communication portrayed in film. The focus will be on how communication is used to initiate, maintain, and
terminate relationships. The film will serve as a vehicle for learning about interpersonal communication and
relationships. You will analyze what the film has shown about the ways people relate to one another.
Additionally, instructions are attached below that contain examples of topics that could be covered.
