  • “Capital Budgeting Analysis: Evaluating the Purchase of New Backhoes for Shoals Corporation”

    Overview
Part of a manager’s role is to evaluate capital investment projects to choose the best return on investment. In this assignment, you will use capital budgeting techniques to make an investment decision and present your findings in a PowerPoint presentation.
    Scenario
For this assignment, you will take on the role of a manager for Shoals Corporation. Shoals is a company that uses backhoes to complete its work. You will analyze the information provided here and then create a presentation to communicate your recommendation to company leaders.
The Shoals Corporation puts significant emphasis on cash flow when planning capital investments. The company chose its discount rate of 8 percent based on the rate of return it must pay its owners and creditors. Using that rate, Shoals Corporation then uses different methods to determine the most appropriate capital outlays.
This year, Shoals Corporation is considering the following capital investment: buying five new backhoes to replace the backhoes it now owns. The new backhoes are faster, cost less to run, provide for more accurate trench digging, have comfort features for the operators, and have 1-year maintenance agreements to go with them. The old backhoes are working just fine, but they do require considerable maintenance. The backhoe operators are very familiar with the old backhoes and would need to learn some new skills to use the new backhoes.
Use the following information in deciding whether to purchase the new backhoes:

For this assignment, review the Declaration of Independence and videos to broaden your understanding of this founding document. While the Declaration of Independence was written generations ago, many argue that it still influences the spirit of the United States. After reading the document and watching the videos, you will be asked to reflect on how this document transcends time and influences the nation.
After reflecting upon the Declaration of Independence, read, “So You’re an American?” A Guide to Answering Difficult Questions Abroad. This reading will review values and ideals that are important to many, if not all, Americans. After reading the article, you will be asked to select one of the concepts or values that you believe are central to maintaining a good society and discuss how that concept or value is derived from or related to concepts in the Declaration of Independence.

Please read and view the following:

    ASSIGNMENT INFORMATION
The topic for this week’s reflection assignment is the Declaration of Independence. Use “So you’re an American?” to assist you in connecting values to the Declaration of Independence.
In writing your response, include specific examples and statements from the Declaration of Independence (citing it appropriately: Jefferson, 1776). Follow the 2+1 Rule in your assignment.
First, respond to the following prompt:
How do the values in the Declaration of Independence manifest in modern American society, or not? Explain.
Next, using the “So you’re an American?” article, select one of the concepts or values mentioned that you believe is central to maintaining what you view to be a good society and discuss how that concept or value is derived from or related to concepts from the Declaration of Independence. In your opinion, are you able to trace the values and concepts listed in the article to a specific point in the Declaration of Independence?
Use specific concepts from the course readings or other outside sources to support your reasoning.
Since you are reflecting on complex ideas, your submission should incorporate an intro, a thesis statement, a body, and a summary conclusion to assist in organizing your thoughts. Always complete the Application Assignment before the Reflection Assignment.
