In this module, we looked at how 20th-century art was largely about awareness. Art refected a culture that had become more aware of itself, aware of the critic, aware of the global nature of the world, and aware of man’s atrocities. Many artists also become aware of art produced in Non-Western places like Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Let’s look at how those influences manifested in Western Art. 
• Investigate an artwork or artist whose work exhibits the influence of African, Asian, or Oceania Art or Culture. 
• Post an image of the work and write a 300-word essay on the following.
–How was the artist influenced by Non-Western art?
–Talk about the specific aspects of their artworks where you can readily see the Non-Western influences.
–How was this art received and perceived at the time it was created? How do we view it now? Can you site contemporary influences that came from this art?

In this Case Assignment, we will be comparing Abstract Expressionism using work by Jackson Pollock, One: Number 31, and Pop Art using work by Andy Warhol, Campbell’s Soup Cans. Take a look at the images by clicking on the links below before you continue.
Just as the name indicates, often the focus of a work of Pop Art is a casual (as opposed to elitist) subject. In our example, Warhol’s object can be found in any grocery store. Abstract Expressionism gained major recognition after WWII. Just as the name indicates, it does not depict any specific subject or human figure. Some scholars attribute that rejection of specificity to the horrors of the war.
Although our two works could not be more different, they both represent the reality of post WWII America. Pollock can be viewed as championing “the role of the artist,” as his art seems a pure abstraction of his body movements and his handling of the paintbrush, whereas Warhol seems to not have any real connection to the making of his art, as he upholds everyday, mass-produced objects in 1960s America as subject matter for high art.
For this assignment, you will conduct research to identify two scholarly essays for abstract expressionism style and two scholarly essays for Pop Art style. You will use information from these sources to compare the different styles of art.
Write a 3- to 4-page paper in which you provide information about your research and Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art styles. You should address the following questions:
What search strategies did you use to find scholarly essays?
How do you know the sources are credible?
Consider the qualifications of the author, the publisher, credibility of the location or site, currency, accuracy, and purpose of the information.
What are the main ideas discussed in each of the essays you found for the different art styles?
How are the main ideas in the Abstract Expressionist essays demonstrated in Pollock’s art?
How are the main ideas in the Pop Art essays demonstrated in Warhol’s art?

You have had one semester in which to examine many works in a very broad survey of Western Art. You have seen much in class, and even more on your own as you have researched and completed seven assignments.
In short, compose a list of your personal top five (5) works of art from this semester, and describe why you have chosen these particular works in light of so many works we’ve viewed. Some questions to consider:
Why did these five make your list? 
How did you arrive at your list? 
Are they your favorites, or are they deserving of such honor despite not being actual personal favorites?
Did you see them in class, or in your own research, or both? 
Were you familiar with any of these works prior to class? 
By placing these works in their context, were you able to gain a new understanding of the works as representatives of a specific time, place and culture, thereby catching a glimpse of the past in a new and dare I say, profound way?
Be sure to fully identify your top five by title, date, and artist if known, and please cite sources, whether lectures, study guides, notes, textbook or other.
NO bullet points! Use complete sentences – this is not a formal research paper but you do have time to polish it before submitting a sloppy one-paragraph essay. To wit: each work merits a minimum of one paragraph, offering as much detail as possible. If one double-spaced typed page is approximately 250 words, I’d say this essay should aim for at least 750.

Students should include brief biographical information/cultural information, cultural influences/society events, purpose, technological innovation, and the style or movement in which this artist exists/existed or work was created. You will choose an artist, object,artwork cultural object from the textbook. Then you will need to look outside the book online or in the library for more information. Part B: Identify and select an art theme and write about events in your life, most significant, memorable, or important experience. Part C: This next section needs to include with a description and characteristic features of the materials (Media/Medium) used to create the selected artwork from Part A. Students will write a project statement explaining choices you made choosing the elements & principles, artwork, artist, material/media, theme, personal connection. Lastly, your presentation should include how artwork connects to your culture, how that work selected relates to your own relationship with art, and personal connection to one’s own life. Explain what you were inspired by when choosing or stood out to you. Be sure to explain how this course helped you view art after completing it.

Consider the debate among historians about art restoration. For example, in 2016 the Louvre Museum made the decision to restore Leonardo da Vinci’s St. John the Baptist. This sparked a debate regarding the altering of the image and artist intent. In this discussion students should consider the positions of the historians and decide should the artwork undergo restoration. Be specific in your reasons as you detail what the restoration would imply (the removal of glazing or varnish) and how it might impact (or if it will not) the artist work. Compare and contrast the results from the Da Vinci restoration.
Did the restoration alter the artist’s work?
How did the removal of the varnish change the work?
Or was the varnish altering the artist’s work? How so?
Does it change the way we experience the work? Or the content/meaning of the work?
Requirements:

Select an artwork from Abstract Expressionism or Pop Art (the two styles which we discussed in detail in Case 4) that catches your eye. However, it can be any work created after WWII that you feel passionate about. Exclude those pieces that are featured in our Case 4 assignment (Pollock’s One: Number 31 and Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans).
Write a 2- to 3-page paper discussing how the work of your choice reflects the typical values and characteristics of its era and style. Please also include information about the era and style, description of the artwork, and some biographical information about the artist.
