Theatrical Performance Assignment Instructions
Shakespeare’s works have been around for a long time. His writing is open to interpretation, especially when it is performed live. One of the most famous scenes from Shakespeare’s work comes from the tragedy, Hamlet. The most famous scene is a soliloquy, a scene that displays a character’s inner thoughts to the audience. At this moment Hamlet is considering if suicide would be a better choice than continuing to live through his difficult life. Hamlet is deeply religious and concerned about the consequences of taking his own life. This scene displays Hamlet’s consideration of his inner turmoil.
Watch the following three interpretations from different productions of Hamlet. While each actor and director use the same original text as a starting point, they all present a unique version of the scene.
In a minimum of 300 words total (100 words minimum for each prompt), address the following for each performance:
Why do you believe the director made the choices they did regarding the set, costume, and lighting?
What made each actor’s portrayal unique (mood, delivery, attitude)?
Thinking about all three of the provided clips select the one portrayal you think seemed the most authentic to the emotions of the text and discuss why. Be specific.
Note: This assignment requires a minimum of 300 words total, with a minimum of 100 words per prompt. However, be sure to write enough to cover each prompt while utilizing the terms covered in the unit.

Title: Exploring the Renaissance: My Favorite Time Period in Art History The Renaissance is undoubtedly my favorite time period in art history. This period, spanning from the 14th to the 17th century, was characterized by a resurgence of
What time period / art style stands out to you as your favorite as you look back over all of the study guides, power points, lectures, online resources, and e-book you’ve studied in this class? Why?
Use a minimum of 5 works of art from your favorite period / style to fully explain your choice, offering an overall careful analysis of the period / style followed by detailed descriptions / analyses of each of the five works. Be as specific as you can about the events, places and people of your chosen time period in your discussion –this will help you determine why you chose what you did. You will need to focus on context to fully answer the prompt.
Be sure to fully identify your top five by title, date, and artist if known, and please cite sources, whether lectures, study guides, notes, textbook or other.
NO bullet points! Use complete sentences – this is not a formal research paper but you do have time to polish it before submitting a sloppy one-paragraph essay. To wit: each work merits a minimum of one paragraph, offering as much detail as possible. If one double-spaced typed page is approximately 250 words, I’d say this essay should aim for at least 750. -
“Tweeting Through Modern Art: A Parisian Art Critic’s Exclusive Preview”
1. Read the lecture by K. McArthur as well as the e-book assigned reading. Look through the Study Guide and the Power Point, and take time to watch the shorts / videos and visit the websites if possible – there is a lot of information included in the Online External Resources folder.
2. Choose between eight to ten (8-10) works of art from the study guide or power point and compose (pretend) tweets for each work of art. Please note that you DO NOT have to have an X / Twitter account to complete this assignment – these descriptive phrases of 280 characters or less* are just a concise and fun way for you to share with us those works you enjoyed viewing /reading about, and to offer your thoughts about them in a creative way. Have fun with this!
3. Think of it this way: We already know that every work on the study guide and / or power point has already been exhibited for the first time – they’re famous, right?! But – you are going to pretend you are the leading art critic in Paris during the 19th century, and that you are privy to an exclusive private showing before the public is allowed to see the works you are seeing so that you can give them a concise but witty, descriptive peek into what they will soon see. It’s sort of like being invited to a Hollywood opening night – you get to watch a new movie makes its debut, but you can only share about it publicly with one tweet.
4. You must choose at least one work of art from the following three period styles listed on the Modern Art Study Guide (Cubism, Dada, and Surrealism), but it’s up to you how you distribute the remaining five to seven tweets among any Modern period / style. You should include images or links to images in your list.
