  • “Looking for Love in the Stone Age: A Dating Profile of Homo neanderthalensis” Looking for Love in the Stone Age: A Dating Profile of Homo neanderthalensis Scientific name: Homo neanderthalensis, also known

    Purpose
The goal of this activity is to creatively portray some important attributes of a major fossil hominin species.
    Task
For this discussion, you will select one of the fossil hominins that we’ve discussed in lecture and create an online dating profile using some of their unique attributes. Get creative but make sure you include the major characteristics of the species. In your posting, remember to:
Include the scientific name of the hominin you’ve selected (work in any nicknames we’ve discussed in a creative way in the text)
In the profile, make sure you include a mix of morphological and behavioral traits, the time period they lived, and their geographic range (I’m looking for at minimum 5 key pieces of information about the hominin). Highlight any major moments in hominin evolution associated with your species of choice.
You may want to think about answering these questions for your hominin:
What are your best physical features and why?
What are your special skills and/or favorite hobbies?
What are you looking for in a partner?
What is your favorite food and how do you like it prepared?
What are you binging on Netflix right now and why? (or Hulu, Prime, Disney+ whatever streaming service)
Describe your perfect first date g. On a typical weekend you will find me… (Example: on a typical weekend you will find me building a fire in a cave)
What are 5 things you couldn’t live without?
Message me if… (Example: Message me if your cranial capacity is at least as big as your ego; Example: Message me if you like long muddy walks at Laetoli)
After you make your post, respond to at least 2 classmates in character as your hominin– these responses should note shared or divergent interests.
Your work should be your own– do not plagiarize. The tone of your post should be playful and silly but don’t write anything that would make your mother blush.
This assignment was created based on a prompt shared by Dr. Cara Ocobock of University of Notre Dame
    (https://sites.nd.edu/cara-ocobock/fossil-hominin-dating-profile/).

Introduction – Body – Conclusion – Works Cited
    3,000-word minimum (10 – 12 pages, double spaced)
    Title page

Please use Chicago. You can find out how to implement citation styles here: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/resources.htmlLinks to an external site.
    PROMPT:
The avenues in which we understand cultures from the past can be convoluted. Through doing intense research, we can see how history, archaeology, and oral histories only provide a smaller part of a larger story. For this term paper, you will choose a culture from the past to further investigate. Research online and using our college library to find out the ways in which this particular culture has been documented, paying particular attention to the DISCUSSION QUESTIONS below. Any culture chosen will need to have had some sort of archaeological intervention. You are free to choose any of the cultures we have gone over in class or find one of your own!
    DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
Introduce this past culture. Who were they? From what time period? How did they fit into the global timeline? How far did their boundaries reach?
In what ways have their history been documented (historical documents, archaeological resources, oral histories, etc). Do these research avenues complement or contrast each other? How?
What particular archaeological methods were used in the archaeological analysis of this site? Specific dating techniques? Survey? Excavation? GPR? Faunal analysis? How many archaeological sites are you discussing in your term paper to get a better understanding of this culture?
What cultural extrapolations can we make based on the archaeological resources found? Provide concrete reasons.
What are some pseudoscientific theories surrounding this particular culture? How mainstream/underground is the theor(ies)? In other words, is there a large following? What are some of the things that make these theories attractive? What are some of the ways these theories are a detriment to the understanding of the past culture? To human ingenuity?
Are there any present-day descendent communities associated with this past culture? What are their views of their ancestors? What are their views of archaeological research (for or against)?
You must search out at least 5 scholarly sources to inform your analysis paper. The video short and textbook can also be used, but they will not count toward this minimum. Visit the Simplify Your Research! Video Series page to learn how to search for and choose the best scholarly sources.
You may use 3-4 pictures in your paper to further convey your point, just remember to cite them on your reference page. Keep in mind not to use pictures that are large–a good size would be around 1/3 of the page.
**Please note that you may not write about what the above 2 examples covered.
This submission will account for 70 points of your total paper grade (130).
This essay must be turned in here by the due date and must have a turnitin score of less than 24%. If your paper has a score of 24% or higher and/or if it is late, it will receive an automatic zero. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Attatched below are example papers as well as the paper propoasl. Include the three sources that are in the proposal and add 3 more, to have atleast 6 total sources.
    Below is a sample outline:

  • Exploring the Concept of “The Peasant” in European Traditions and Beyond: A Discussion on the Code of Ethics in ‘Zorba the Greek’ and ‘Kypseli’

    Discussion Prompts:
What changes do your readings describe and how might that reflect on the concept of “the peasant?”
Upon watching the documentary, ‘Kypseli’, and feature film, ‘Zorba the Greek’, think about what that code of ethics may mean in terms of European traditions in relation to the rest of the world. Can you think of examples of cultural ideas in your own settings that seem to reflect that code of ethics? Might they come from a European heritage or exposure through colonialism, or might there be instances of ‘independent invention’?
I chose the film ‘Zorba’, because it reflects so well the types of social interactions one might very well have found in a small, Mediterranean peasant village of that day. See if you can pull some examples from the film as illustrations of the concepts in the documentary and your readings for this week.
    Reminders:
Please note that these prompts are not the last word on what you could discuss, nor do you have to ‘answer’ all of them. These prompts are suggestions, although I do consult them when making up quiz questions. What else from the readings and film sparks your interest or do you think worthy of discussion? The only requirement is that you stay generally on topic.
Do reference and cite the week’s material, as well as cite any outside material you draw from. I do not require a specific reference style; most of you are probably most familiar with the APA.
    350 inital post. 150 reponse.

  • “Exploring the Evolution of Anthropological Study in Europe through Three Book-Length Ethnographies”

Due: Wednesday, Week 4, 11:59 p.m. Points: 100 Word count: 5 pages/1,250 words (not counting the references cited list). The purpose of this assignment is to examine three book-length ethnographies of Europe, chosen from a pre-approved list, one from each of three eras: • Classic; • Post-Cold War; • 21st century. You will not need to read the books (although you can, if you can squeeze in the time), but you will need to ready about them and write about a 250 word description of each, plus a synopsis of about 500 words discussing what the three books tell you about the foci of anthropological study in those three eras. Requirements • At least three book-length, ethnographic works by anthropologists. A pre-approved list is provided. Note that new books in the “21st century” category are coming out all the time, so if you find something interesting that isn’t on that list, run it by me for approval. • For each of these sources, you should prepare to describe them in about a page. • You will not have to read each, but you will need to read about them in book reviews published in the academic press. If they are very new, reviews may not be available yet, but you can determine a fair amount about the subject from the publisher description. Some of the older books are so classic, that you can read about them in places other than the academic journals. • Discuss what the collection of three tells you about the study of Europe as an anthropological subject and how that study has changed over time. Important parameters • Be sure that you have properly formatted your bibliography. You must use the Chicago, MLA, or APA formatting and you must provide both a references cited list and in-text citations that show where you are using those listed works. • Cite in-text and provide bibliographic information about any reviews you use. • Write concisely and clearly, but with enough detail that readers can get a good idea of what the book is about. • Submit as a Word or Pages or other word-processing document, not a pdf.

Purpose: You will be writing to the general public, or a subset of the general public. Generally, scientists are terrible at communicating their scholarly research to the public. This assignment will give you practice at doing so.
For this assignment, select a narrow topic of something related to the stone age. Topics like “Stone tools” are too broad – make sure you pick something specific related to stone tools (or whatever topic you select); otherwise, your essay will be too broad and superficial.
Your essay can take one of several forms. You can envision this as a blog post for Buzzfeed News, The Huffington Post, Slate, or Vox. You can also envision this is the text for a museum exhibit (and attached images of the artifacts that would be displayed with your exhibits. You can also pretend the paper is a script for a documentary you are making about your topic. Feel free to be creative! You also get to choose the audience. You can write to the general public, to elementary school children, high schoolers, whomever!
Formatting: At least 4 pages in length; double spaced; Times New Roman; 12 point font; 1 inch margins. Note: Your header (name, date, etc.) do not count towards the 4 page minimum.
Citation Style: All assignments in this course should be in proper APA format (with the exception of needing a title page). You should have in-text citations each time that you quote, summarize, or paraphrase. Please see the resources on MyCourses for more information, or see https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html.
Sources: You are required to use at least 3 sources in your essay. These may be scholarly or non-scholarly. If they are non-scholarly, they should still be reputable from established publications/journalists. You should submit a bibliography at the end of your assignment.
Genre: This paper is a part of the non-scholarly genre. This means that it should be written in a relatively informal, non-academic tone. Your essay should be interesting and engaging. I should want to read your essay, not because I am your instructor and I have to, but because I am drawn into your paper. Use narrative, examples, and images liberally throughout the essay. I should never be bored while reading your essay. Note: Images do not count toward the 4 pages.
