  • Interpreting the Siege and Fall of Masada: A Critical Analysis of Yigael Yadin and Shaye Cohen’s Perspectives Understanding Scholarly Literature: Differentiating between Two Readings Title: Navigating Scholarly Literature: A Comparative Analysis of Two Readings

Differences of scholarly research on the events that took place at Masada in 73 CE.
(5-7 double-spaced pages; Times New Roman, size 12 font)
Topic: The siege and fall of Masada in 73 CE provides us with an almost unparalleled opportunity to draw on both literary and archaeological information to understand one of the best-known events in ancient Jewish history. In 5-7 double-spaced pages(Times New Roman, size 12 font), analyze the following two readings in light of the below instructions.
Yigael Yadin, Masada: Herod’s Fortress and the Zealots’ Last Stand. Translated by Moshe Pearlman; New York: Random House, 1966.
    Yadin, Masada (1).pdf
*Important: The file contains excerpts from different parts of Yadin’s book, and as such, the flow is sometimes interrupted. Even so, you should be able to follow the flow and logic of his argumentation. Read the following pages: pp. 54, 96-100, 193-201, 209-37. Note that pages 209-25 (the long section on the Roman camps) may be skimmed.
Shaye Cohen, “Masada: Literary Tradition, Archaeological Remains, and the Credibility of Josephus,” Journal of Jewish Studies 33 (1982): 385-405.
Cohen, Masada, Literary Tradition, Archaeological Remains, and the Credibility of Josephus_rotated.pdf
The assignment: Scholars often disagree about how to interpret evidence. Although this may seem obvious, it is not so easy to master two divergent points of view and present a fair case for both. With this paper you will try to weigh differing and at times contradictory analyses of historical evidence. Write a detailed account of the dispute encountered in the readings (listed above and provided on Canvas). It is up to you to decide how best to organize your essay. Do not write as if I already know the contents of the readings and the subject of the debate. The goal is to distill and analyze the main points related to the debate at hand (do not summarize or recount the readings at length). When relevant, you should not shy away from discussing nitty-gritty details (such as the nature and location of the discovery of skeletal remains). Explain the problem and present the essential evidence at stake. Make sure that you understand what positions are held, and at what specific point(s) the writers agree and disagree. Observe the particular patterns in the discussion, such as:
    – who wrote first/second, and the effect of the statement/response (are they talking exactly about the same thing)?
    – what is their approach and the logic of their argument?
    – what evidence do they use and what evidence do they omit?
    – do they categorize the evidence in the same manner?
    – what is considered decisive by each writer?
Do not choose sides. For this paper, I am more concerned that you show a detailed and fair understanding of each position. It is sometimes said that one cannot begin a fair rebuttal of any position until one can present that position in terms that its own advocate would accept as accurate. Apply your critical thinking to the way(s) in which the writers develop their cases. In addition to the fulfillment of the above instructions, your paper will be graded on the basis of the following criteria: coherent organization, and clear, grammatical writing that is free of spelling errors.
Warning: You may encounter in these readings names of places and people as well as technical terms and foreign words that are unfamiliar to you. The fact that you do not know these will represent initial barriers to understanding the readings, but this is very much part of the point to this paper. Your job is to read for the structure of thinking, to follow the flow of an argument, and then to figure out each category of information and how it fits into the larger purpose of the reading. The significance of most of the evidence can be figured out this way. You should look up unfamiliar words in a dictionary. Most other technical information (such as references to other scholars’ articles or books and foreign words) can be figured out from context. Despite such features regularly found in scholarly literature, it should still be possible to follow the reasoning of the reading. these two links are the readings you are differentiating in this essay: https://yu.instructure.com/courses/66632/files/3899564?verifier=b3t1KUvV3DFBUh5o0gv90mIbuzlhO1g8u2j2tL7A&wrap=1 and https://yu.instructure.com/courses/66632/files/3899564?verifier=b3t1KUvV3DFBUh5o0gv90mIbuzlhO1g8u2j2tL7A&wrap=1

  • Title: The Intersection of Individual Liberties and Discrimination Protections: Examining the Impact of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 on LGBT Rights and Religious Freedom

    1. Discuss the below item on the discussion board in 100 words or more.
    2. Respond to two other student’s discussions ON TWO SEPARATE DAYS with your opinion of his/her discussion in 50 words or more for each summarization. Responses such as, “I agree” or “Good idea” are not acceptable and will receive no credit. The response must add to the scholarly dialogue presenting the reasons for your opinion and supporting documentation cited.
    Topic:
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 (specifically Title VII) is the Holy Grail of discrimination protections in the United States. It protects against discrimination in places of public accommodation (airports, restaurants) for race, color, sex, religion and national origin. You will notice however those protections do not include provisions for LGBT individuals. An internal EEOC ruling followed by an Article III decision in 2015 – 2016 finally interpreted “sex” to include LGBT discrimination. However, a variety of state laws and local ordinances protected LGBT individuals from discrimination in the workplace. The Great State of Minnesota (yes, I’m from there), became the first state in the nation to include protections for both sexual orientation and gender identity in their Human Rights Act in 1993. (Florida has yet to protect either).
One cannot read a news article today without seeing a story about a court ruling or new statute regarding protection of LGBT individuals, or conversely, the freedom to practice religion and the intersection of those two views. For example, recent state and Supreme Court cases have found that private bakeries are not required to provide services for same-sex weddings.
What is the appropriate balance between individual liberties and the law? One person’s liberty is another person’s oppression. Freedom and equality despite arguably being our two most important values as a nation, are in fact contradictory forces. How can you be free and equal concurrently? Should for-profit business owners have the right on religious grounds to perform certain services to LGBT individuals, provide contraceptives to employees pursuant to the ACA (Obamacare), and so on and so forth?

  • Title: The Impact of Moral Philosophy on Society’s Decrease in Violence

    VIDEO 1: https://www.ted.com/talks/steven_pinker_and_rebecca_newberger_goldstein_the_long_reach_of_reason
This video features the prominent psychologist Steven Pinker and his philosopher wife Rebecca Goldstein. You may need to read the transcript or watch it more than once, but the big picture is quite simple. It turns out our modern day human society is vastly less violent than it used to be–for example, we used to routinely use torture and engage in total warfare. (Even hunter-gatherer societies were incredibly violent compared to today’s standards. The chance of dying a violent death was much higher then than now.) The question is: what has changed? Why are we far less violent than we used to be? The argument given in the video is that moral philosophy–namely ethics–has played a large role.
Note: Many find it very hard to believe that we are far less violent than we used to be. This is because as long as there is any violence left in the world, it will be reported on. And so people have the false impression that we haven’t changed. But compare the civil war–in which 620,000 Americans died–to, for example, the recent assault on the capital, which led to the death of 5 people. Obviously, it’s incredibly bad any time anyone dies from violence, but, statistically it’s a marked drop.
In this course, many videos will be taken from the widely acclaimed Justice series by Harvard professor Michael Sandel. His course is very engaging, professionally produced, and was turned into a PBS series special.

  • “From Morocco to Luxembourg to the USA: A Personal Perspective on the Challenges and Opportunities of Immigration and Racism”

I chose to explore the subject of
immigration as someone who has personally experienced it multiple times: moving
from Morocco to Luxembourg and then from Luxembourg to the USA. These
experiences have given me a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities
that come with being an immigrant. As a mother who lived in Luxembourg and then
moved with my husband to the USA, I’ve observed stark differences in how racism
manifests in Europe compared to the US. In the US, a woman can wear a hijab and
pursue any profession she desires, such as being a nurse, doctor, teacher, or
even a police officer. Additionally, women can wear a burkini and swim at the
beach without issue. In contrast, in France, wearing a hijab to school is
prohibited, among other restrictions. While racism exists in the US, the
government actively works to combat it, which is why I find this subject
    important to discuss.
