  • Title: Reflecting on Medication Errors in Healthcare Practice

    Reflect
    Reflecting
on your learning is an effective practice that helps you become a
better learner. It also helps me see where you might need some
additional support. In this activity, your job is to talk about your own
    learning.
Medication Error Reflection Part I: Self-Reflection
    Medication
Administration is a serious responsibility of the Registered Nurse.
Medication errors happen frequently, and sometimes patients pay a high
price for a nurse’s inattentive mistake. Sometimes, the nurse can pay a
high price for their mistake such as in the case of the Tennessee RN
convicted of negligent homicide when she administered the wrong
medication to a patient resulting in death.
Read this article about a nurse found guilty in an accidental injection death of a 75-year-old patient,
and then reflect on your own experience as a healthcare worker to see
if you remember when a medication error may have happened. Was the error
serious, or was it a “near miss?” What was the outcome if it was a real
error, and how could it have been prevented? How did reading the
article make you feel? What was your initial reaction to it?

  • Title: Understanding and Analyzing the Right to Life: A Case Study on Theoretical Frameworks and Personal Experiences

Format: Your final paper should include a title page, body, and reference page.  Your paper should have one-inch borders on all four sides, use Times New Roman-12 point font, be double spaced, and not have an extra space in-between paragraphs. (You may need to turn this off in MS word by going to “paragraph” and clicking ‘Don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style’). Since this is an INLT course, you need to use the Chicago Manual of Style footnote method with a “References” page.
Your final papers should include the following sections.
Introduction. This section should be written last and should pull from some of the elements of your literature review.  You will need to clearly provide an overview of the topic you are writing about, present your research question, and discuss why the situation is important to investigate. Also, explain to the reader up front how the paper is organized. Writing the introduction last is helpful in ensuring that you’ve incorporated any changes that may have taken place over the course of your research.  This section should be about 1 page in length.
Literature Review. Your literature review section should incorporate the content from your second assignment, plus any other literature that you have identified to support your research. This section should be 5-6 pages in length.
Analysis and Findings. Every student’s paper will be a little bit different here, depending on the topic. You have only a couple of weeks to build this final section, and you will not have sufficient time to conduct surveys and collect data. So, let’s talk about what kind of “case study” CAN be accomplished in this time. Most importantly, you should explain whether and how the scholarly research in the literature review answers the research question that you posed at the beginning of the paper (or at least contributes to a better understanding of that research question). You can also choose to include some other things. Here are some example ideas. These are only examples. Present your analysis and findings as you see fit:
Idea 1: Step back and browse the scholarly articles in your literature review. Select one scholar that you believe provides the best theory or framework or point-of-view for understanding your topic (e.g., Walzer’s Right to Life theory). Present that as your recommended “theoretical framework” for further study of the topic. Compare and contrast the theoretical framework with other scholarly studies from the literature review.
Idea 2: Similar to Idea #1 above, select a theoretical framework and explain how you would use that framework to architect a future study on the topic. For example, you might develop an interview protocol and data collection effort around that framework. (Note: This may lead you to a potential future masters’ thesis study.).
Idea 3: If you have personal experience with the topic, present your own fact-supported experience. Compare and contrast your experience with what is presented in the scholarly studies in the literature review.
This section should be 5-6 pages in length.
Conclusion. Conclude the paper by reminding the reader of what was presented the paper, how it was organized, the results, and what the analysis adds to our body of knowledge.  Within your conclusion you should also offer suggestions for avenues of future research for other scholars as all knowledge is evolutionary.  This section should be 1-2 pages in length.

Discuss the following in your initial post:
Which stage of the lifecycle is most vulnerable to food insecurity? Why?
If a neighbor told you that they were experiencing food insecurity, what resources/programs would you tell them are available to assist them in the United States?
Name one culture or country where food insecurity is a concern. What created the issue?
What is being done to alleviate the food insecurity in that culture or country?

  • Title: Promoting Individual Growth and Potential: A Christian Perspective on Meeting the Needs of Students with Disabilities

Part of a special educator’s responsibilities include understanding the characteristics of the major disability categories and how the characteristics affect typical development. When conducting observations and consulting with staff who work with students with disabilities, teachers must be able to articulate the differences in development and prescribe appropriate interventions. Understanding the effect of culture and language development must also be considered in meeting student needs.
    Case Study:  Larissa
    Grade:  3rd
    Age:  8
Larissa is a female third grade student with a specific learning disability in written expression and an executive functioning disorder. She is originally from El Salvador and moved to the U.S. with her mother, father, older sister, and newborn brother when she was 14 months old. In first grade, she was assessed for special education services and was found eligible in the areas of written expression and executive functioning due to a diagnosis of dyslexia and ADHD by an outside psychologist referred by her primary care physician. Larissa’s verbal expression is close to grade level, but when asked to express her thoughts on paper, she often uses lower level vocabulary and fragmented sentences, and her writing lacks organization. This could be due to her inability to focus on longer tasks as well as her difficulty with spelling, written expression, and multiple languages spoken in the home. Larissa also struggles with starting tasks independently, staying on task, and with task completion. She often cannot find her materials when needed such as pencils, paper, assignments, books, etc.
Recently, her mother and father separated. Her mother has since moved the children out of their home and in with family friends. The family friends have three children and two adults living in the home already, so the three bedroom, one bath home is very crowded. Their new home is within walking distance of Rosewood Elementary, where Larissa has recently transferred.
Larissa’s mother, Rita, has a job in which she works long hours and is currently struggling to establish her own line of credit. At home, Larissa’s family speaks both English and Spanish. Rita considers English her primary language; however, Spanish is her first language and she sometimes has difficulty understanding written English, despite speaking it well.
At a recent parent-teacher conference with Larissa’s teacher, Mr. Fleming, Rita shared that she obtained an order of protection against her husband after they separated. Because the order of protection extends to the children, she provided Mr. Fleming legal documentation of the order. The day after the conference, Mr. Fleming notified the office and gave them the documentation in the event that Larissa’s father should come to the school.
Using the information from the case study, address the following in a 1,000-1,250 word essay:
Discuss how the Christian worldview perspective can be demonstrated in professional practice by explaining why teachers need to be committed to respecting students’ individual strengths, interests, and needs to promote each student’s growth and potential.
Explain how language, culture, and family background influence the student’s student’ learning.
Describe three research-based, specially designed instructional strategies that can be used to respond to the developmental differences and individual needs of the student.
Cite research to provide justification for how the selected strategies provide specially designed instruction and access to the general education curriculum and standards as required by IDEA.
Support the assignment with at least three scholarly resources.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
