  • “Exploring the Contemporary Art Scene in New Orleans: A City Essay”

    Overview
This extra-credit assignment is worth up to 5% of total class points. This is the
equivalent of half of a letter grade. I encourage you to take the opportunity to do it.
Choose a city in the United States to research for a Mini City Project Essay. Our class
has been focused on regions outside of the US. Now, shift your focus back here, use
the skills you’ve developed this semester to explore the structure of an art scene in
another city in the US. Los Angeles is not an option. Detroit is a good choice.
Chicago, too. New York is an obvious choice, but it is so big it could be overwhelming.
How about New Orleans? Open up a map of the US, sit back and look around. Use
the City Essay worksheet to help generate questions to inform your essay. I encourage
you to choose one of the larger cities, because you need to be able to find good,
    reliable sources to draw on.

Assignment 1: Impact of Media on Your Life
This assignment is worth 70 points (7%) of your final grade.
According to data from Statista (2023), the average American adult spends more than half of each day (13 hours, 8 minutes) consuming media across various platforms. This includes watching television, browsing the internet, listening to music, reading books, and using mobile devices. The impact of media consumption on individuals can vary depending on the content and context of what they consume.

    Skills:
For this activity, you will be applying critical thinking skills to formulate and support your conclusions on a problem or issue.
    Activity:
For this exercise, choose a day this week and catalogue all the mass media you consume during that day. Then, reflect on your media use and write a 1–2 page (about 250-500 words) essay that addresses the following questions:
How does your daily media consumption influence your personal and social well-being?

As a grantseeker, getting started can be the most challenging part of grant writing. To help you identify specific grant options that may fit your research interests, you will need to identify the topic area you’d like to study and find funding sources that fit with your goals. While this sounds simple, it is the most challenging part of your grant writing process!
In this discussion, you will highlight these two areas to provide the basis for your grant. For this week’s discussion, discuss the following:
The general scope of your grant idea. Make sure you explain whether this is a proactive or reactive grant-seeking focus, and how this will contribute to the scope of your project goal.

  • “Fire Prevention and Protection Audit and Assessment of Heat and Wind Hazards in an Assembly Area”

    Assignment Content
As the Environmental Health and Safety Manager (EHS Manager), conduct a fire prevention and protection audit of the following assembly area:
It measures 80 feet by 140 feet.
There are currently two 2A10B:C fire extinguishers located in the center of the room on each of the short ends (40 feet on each end of the room).
The room hazard level is rated as ordinary with moderate amounts of Class A Combustibles and only minimal amounts of flammable/combustible materials.
Then based on the following information, provide a determination (you must show your math calculations) as to how many fire extinguishers are needed for this area and provide comments on their placement.
Your company has several employees who are working along a conveyor line to clean up an over spill of product by manually shoveling the materials. The conveyor belt is located outdoors and will take several days to clean up. Given the following data Wet Bulb Temperature = 88oF; Dry Bulb Temperature = 93oF; and Globe Temperature = 91oF, calculate the WBGT Index. You must show your math calculations.
Due to the heat, the employees are only exposed for 190 minutes at this temperature over an 8-hour workday. Assume a 75oF exposure for the remaining 290 minutes. Provide a recommendation on the work/rest cycle based on the information and guidance in this unit. Include any assumptions in your analysis.
Finally, discuss the concept of wind chill and calculate the wind chill in oF based on the following information below. You must show your calculations.
Air Temperature: 10oF and a Wind Speed of 12 miles per hour (mph)
Your journal may use headings to separate topics. It should be at least two pages in length. APA formatting and references are not required.

  • Title: Advancing the Study on the Impact of Substance Abuse and Educational Programming on Recidivism in Massachusetts Correctional Facilities

**Please see screenshot of prompt for equations.**
In March 2024 the Massachusetts Department of Correction (MDOC) issued a press release https://www.mass.gov/news/massachusetts-department-of-correction-recidivism-study-demonstrates-programming-impact-on-lasting-rehabilitation  announcing the results of a study “Demonstrat[ing] Programming Impact on Lasting Rehabilitation.” The studyLinks to an external site., linked in the press release, “illustrate[s] the positive impact of substance abuse and educational programming on recidivism.” Recidivism, as defined in the studyLinks to an external site., is a binary outcome indicating whether an individual released from a correctional facility is convicted for an offense occurring within one year.
While there are sound reasons to believe that substance abuse treatment and educational opportunities improve incarcerated individuals’ life trajectories after they are released, a review of the study reveals that the statistical methods used were fairly primitive. The “impact” of the educational and substance use programming was inferred by comparing the recidivism of those who completed the programming with a group of individuals who were assigned to the same programming but did not complete it. The statistics in the study consist of two-sample proportion tests only, there are no analyses attempting to assess whether the differences in recidivism between completers and non-completers might be explained, at least in part, by other factors. Any factor that might help explain why some incarcerated individuals recidivate and others do not is thus a potential omitted variable.
To put a finer point on that, you can think of this analysis as presenting the results of regression models of the form
where  is a binary indicator for recidivism,  is a binary indicator for whether an incarcerated individual completed substance abuse programming, and  is a binary indicator for whether an incarcerated individual completed educational programming, in a sample where all individuals were assigned to complete both. The study also examines samples of incarcerated individuals assigned to only the first program, or only the second.
For this memo, suppose that Dr. Rhiana Kohl, MDOC Executive Director of Strategic Planning and Research, has asked for your advice about how to expand this analysis. In 1-2 pages, address the following topics:
Do you have reason to worry about omitted variable bias? (HINT: there is a LOT of relevant evidence for this question in the Appendix tables to the studyLinks to an external site.)
What statistical technique(s) would you recommend to MDOC to more thoroughly study whether the two programs do indeed reduce recidivism? Be very specific, listing all the control variables you think appropriate and recommending a specific model or models (i.e., linear probability model, logit, probit).
