In Unit 3 you were introduced to correlations and the relationship that exists between variables. We deal with and hear about correlations frequently in our everyday lives (Ex: The bus is running late, there must be a lot of traffic. My computer’s internet is running slow, there must be a lot of people on the Wi-Fi. Gas prices are going up, must be Bidens fault, etc.). The interesting part about these “correlations” is that they are all not necessarily true or related, we can sometimes make ourselves believe they are. For this discussion I want you to search the internet for a common correlation we see in society now a day. You can use social media, google, articles YouTube, etc., just make sure they are reliable and appropriate for class. Without doing further research explain how you think this correlation can be tested. What two variables would we have to measure in order to show a relationship for the topic you shared. Of course, we learned that correlation does not equal causation. So the goal of this exercise is to put that into practice and learn about what common correlations are out there that in fact could be misconceptions.

Read the case study text Preventing Destructive Conflict at Work” (Dialogue between Maria and Vicki)
Provide a brief summary of the problem/issues and integrate the answers to the discussion questions; write in paragraph / short essay form.
Please include references to the readings where possible. It is an important part of your answer to demonstrate that you read and can apply the content in the textbook/readings.
Include/integrate reference(s) to at least one vocabulary word/concept from the readings. Use the following linked PDF vocabulary document if you wish *I WILL HAVE THIS LINKED*
Situation: Vicki is an employee in a small training company. Her boss, Maria, has been frustrated with Vicki’s lack of initiative, inability to prioritize her workload, and her lack of interpersonal skills. Vicki is frustrated with Maria because she thinks her boss expects too much from her and the pace of the work is much too fast for a small company. Vicki has been taking a lot of “sick” days lately and often does not follow through with small assignments. The following conversation is just one of many “small” conflicts that have been ongoing for approximately six months. Read the dialogue and then answer the questions below.
Maria: Hey, Vicki. I was wondering where you put that file for the Spring Conference next week.
Vicki: Which one? You give me a lot of files.
Maria: The really big blue one with our logo on the front.
Vicki: That’s the one you said you’d follow up on. I just assumed you did.
Maria: No, I remember very distinctly from our debriefing session that you said you wanted to do it because you had worked with Ed on last year’s conference. We all took different assignments, and that’s the one you took.
Vicki: I definitely took a lot of assignments, but the Spring Conference folder wasn’t one of them.
Maria. Okay. (Pause) I guess what we really need to do is not figure out who lost it, but where it is now.
Vicki: Who “lost” it? It was never mine, so how could I lose it? I’m sick of always being blamed for everything that goes wrong around here. If everyone would just sit still for a minute, maybe all this stuff wouldn’t fall through the cracks.
Maria: Wait a second. I wasn’t blaming you for anything. I just really need to find the folder. I’m wondering where it is, and I need to write the follow-up evaluations.
Vicki: Well, I don’t have it. (Vicki returns to completing her timesheet on the computer).
(Maria retreats to her office and doesn’t say what’s really on her mind. She’s trying not to get too angry. She meets with another colleague later that afternoon and asks the colleague what his thoughts are about Vicki as their support staff.)
Integrate the responses to at least two of the following questions into your initial posting. Remember to integrate at least 1 concept from the readings Do you think this conflict could have been prevented?
Should Vicki and Maria just drop it and not discuss it?
What do you think Maria and Vicki could do to prevent more of this potentially time-wasting and destructive conflict?
If you were to write the “third” story of this conflict, what would it be?
What advice could you give to these conflicting parties?
Do think there is “hope” for this conflict and working relationship? Explain.
Is avoidance the same as prevention?
Your text discusses several benefits of learning conflict management, including success in the workplace. What skills do Maria and Vicki need to learn?

“The Role of Personal Address Resources in Defining Relationships and Personhood within a Community”
In the act of addressing others, speakers evoke personal identities and create and define relationships. Using your fieldnotes and interviews explore some of the personal address resources active within any one community and the patterns and meanings of their uses. Develop categories and groupings of these address terms that reflect their use, e.g., Personal pronouns, titles, occupational designations, endearment terms, family and kinship terms, etc. Discuss (i) any understandings of personhood that these address terms identify in a particular social structure, (ii) the nature of the relationship between the speaker and the hearer, and (iii) the location of relationships on relevant dimensions, e.g., close/distant, personal/professional, peers/rank-differentiated, etc.
For each of the journal entries you are asked to conduct an ethnographic study of language use in interpersonal communication. The lectures and readings are designed to give you a framework for conducting these studies. Each journal entry consists of three separate, but complimentary parts: (i) a review and summary of the relevant literature; (ii) data collection and its presentation; and (iii) an analysis of the data that examines features of a culture at work in communication. Here are some additional ideas that you might consider in relation to these three moments of inquiry.
(i) A review and summary of the relevant literature (2-3 pages)
Presented in this class is a general theory of communication in culture and more specific activity theories of facework, speech acts, person-referring forms, relational dialectics, cultural terms for talk, norms and rules, and narrative. In your paper discuss, at a theoretical level, what any of these theories of communication are. Use the readings assigned to that specific section of the class to help with your review—you may go outside of the class readings should you wish to. Cite your sources!
(ii) Data collection and its presentation (1-3 pages)
The data you will collect in this class will be conducted primarily through participant observations and interviews. Simply put, you will observe and document communication in its naturally occurring context. Document a short transcript of a conversation (it need not be any more than 3-4 exchanges in an ongoing piece of interaction). The primary tool for organizing and presenting your observations is through the Hymes’ (1972) SPEAKING mnemonic. Note in your presentation of the transcription the setting or the scene, the participants, their ends or goals in view, the sequencing of the interaction, the key or emotional tone, the instruments or medium of communication (spoken, mediated, nonverbal, etc), the associated norms or rules, and whether or not the interaction was part of a larger genre for communication.
(iii) An analysis of the data that examines features of a culture at work in communication (2-3 pages)
Use the orientation you have developed in (i) to make a systematic analysis of this data in (ii). Ask yourself how the data reveals a culture at work? By culture we can mean any number of things: nationality, ethnicity, regionality, social class, gender (and all of its non-binary forms), sexuality, patterns of power, intimacy, solidarity, deference, etc. If your observation is one of intercultural communication how might the phenomena play into a sense of conflict, or breakdowns in communication? -

Example:
original jurisdiction over criminal misdemeanors punishable by fine only, no confinement
Court(s) – Municipal Courts, Justice Courts
Looking at the Texas Court Structure chart, you can see that there is more than one court that has original jurisdiction (i.e. have the power to hear and decide a case for the first time) over the same case. When this happens, if it’s a civil case, the plaintiff (the party filing the lawsuit) gets to choose which court to file the case. If it’s a criminal case, then the location of the crime or which law enforcement responded to the case will determine which court the case will be tried.
