Doris Bowman, a 39-year-old diagnosed with uterine fibroids, dysmenorrhea, and menorrhagia, is scheduled for a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. She has a family history of uterine and ovarian cancer. She asks the nurse what she can do to further reduce her risk for cancer and is also concerned for her family members. THIS ASSIGNMENT BASICALLY INVOLVES DEVELOPING A RESEARCH QUESTION THEN IN RELATION TO AN AREA OF NURSING PRACTICE (AM HAPPY FOR YOU TO CHOOSE THE AREA, MAYBE EMERGENCY OR INTENSIVE CARE) THEN SOURCING HIGH LEVEL RESEARCH TO ANSWER THE QUESTION, I AM INTERESTED IN NURSING BURNOUT AND THE EFFECTS OF AN INTERVENTION (MINDFULNESS) BUT AM OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS HERE. Apply the use of high-level evidence in clinical practice. Construct a research question in relation to an area of practice and conduct a search of to identify evidence to answer the question and make recommendations for practice. Also discuss the barriers to evidence-informed practice that may exist in your clinical setting and strategies to address these barriers.
This assessment provides the opportunity to apply the use of high-level evidence in clinical
practice (knowledge translation). construct a research question in relation to an area of practice and conduct a search to identify
evidence to answer the question and make recommendations for practice. You will also discuss
the barriers to evidence-informed practice that may exist in your clinical setting, and strategies to address these barriers.
Assignment structure
• Introduction – provides a road map for the paper (what are you
going to discuss in 1-2 sentences)
• Paragraph 1
• Explain the reason why you have chosen this question (criterion 1)
• Main body of paper – address the remaining criteria in the
rubric. Note the criteria with the highest marks allocated –
this should get more focus in your paper
• Brief 1-3 sentence conclusion summarising what you covered
in the paper
Criterion 1: Identifies and briefly describes a specific
aspect of practice. (10%)
• Why have you chosen this question?
• Suggest providing data or other reasons to support
this discussion (these need to be referenced)
Criterion 2: Develop a specific research question & conduct
the appropriate search for high level evidence.
• Content for weeks 8 – 11 relevant to this criterion
• Question needs to be clear and answerable
• Need to undertake a search & provide brief descriiption so the
marker understands how and where you searched & terms used
• Identify the three highest pieces of evidence, demonstrating
your knowledge of levels of evidence – attach the abstract/s or
summary/summaries of the high-level evidence as appendices
Criterion 3: Critically analyses available evidence
with application to practice setting (25%)
• What are the recommendations? (what do the
resources say in answer to your question?)
• Do you get a clear answer? How does that relate to
(your) current practice?
• If you don’t get a clear answer, can you draw any
conclusions?
