Introduction to Discussion:
This module acts as an introduction to crisis theory, types of crises, and to explore ten essential values in responding to mental health crisis. It important to understand that one theory on it’s own may not be sufficient in addressing crisis. There is a general consensus within the literature that there are several beneficial theories that can be of utility when considering crisis intervention, assessment, and treatment. Please read the assigned readings for this week before completing this week’s discussion assignment.

1.) “In general counseling, no theory explains all counseling problems and required approaches. The same is true for crisis counseling: no one theory explains the phenomenon of crisis adequately. Therefore, the counselor needs to be flexible in drawing upon and applying crisis theory in the same way a counselor would need to be when practicing counseling in general.” (Miller, 2011, p. 15).  
How do does this quote influence your perception of crisis counseling and the role of the crisis counselor?
2.) We can see the counselor as someone who may “help the client see through the fears of the crisis and feel safe enough in counseling to make the best life-enhancing decisions possible”. (Miller, 2011, p. 2). In this way, “the counselor is metaphorically acting as a lighthouse for the client…” (Miller, 2011, p. 2).
