Discussion Postings / Written Work
General Information
Assignments in this course are intended to strengthen your skills in written communication. Effective communication skills, including scholarly writing, is an element of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN) Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing:
“Assume a leadership role in effectively implementing patient safety and quality improvement initiatives within the context of the interprofessional team using effective communication (scholarly writing, speaking, and group interaction)” (AACN, 2011, p.12).
Additionally, the American Organization of Nurse Leader’s (AONL) Nurse Executive Competencies include having the ability to “demonstrate written and oral presentation skills” (AONL, 2015, p.5) as a component of core competencies representing the science of managing the business.
All written assignments submitted by students, including both discussion postings and written papers, should provide evidence of growth in both written communication and scholarly writing over the course of the semester.
General Guidelines
To facilitate your success, please follow these general guidelines:
Discussion Postings
Initial post: Please restate the question you are answering to guide the discussion thread.
All postings (initial and response): Should be a minimum of three paragraphs in length, (approximately 350-500 words), enough content to convey understanding of key concepts.
The first paragraph should be 2-3 sentences in length.
Middle paragraph(s) – should be 5-20 sentences and represent the substance of what you are conveying to the reader. Content should be supported by appropriate citations to assure you have gone beyond opinion.
The final paragraph should be 3-6 sentences and not contain new information but summarize what you have said.
Formatting: For all discussions, I recommend that you do all initial writing in Word or another document that can be saved. This provides you with a back-up in case there are any issues with your posting and/or Canvas glitches (rare but occur). Then copy and paste the content from that document into the discussion text box. I do understand that there are formatting issues with APA once the document is copied and pasted. Do your best to correct the formatting.
Use of Quotations: The use of quotations in discussions and written assignments is strictly limited for use in citing definitions ( See Section 8.25 of APA Manual: Principles of Direct Quotation – p. 270)
Scoring Rubric: A detailed grading rubric is provided to guide your responses.
Written Papers
All written papers are to follow the APA 7th (2020) for structure and content (please note, not all elements are components of course assignments).
Please refer to paper instructions and grading rubric for further details.

Title: Relapse Prevention and Aftercare Planning for Substance Abuse Clients
Part 1
What are the key factors that you should consider for relapse prevention when working with a Substance Abuse client?
PART 2
Select 2 techniques (from below) and describe how you would incorporate this into an “aftercare plan” for an inmate that you are working with as they prepare to transition out of the prison system and back to society. What steps would you take to support their successful transition back to the community?
Learning how to delay and distract in response to cravings, by engaging in constructive activities, writing (e.g., journaling), communicating with supportive others, going to meetings, and other positive means by which to ride out the wave of craving until it subsides.
Identifying dysfunctional ways of thinking (e.g., “permission-giving beliefs”) and getting into the habit of thinking and writing effective responses. For example, a patient learns to spot the thought, “I haven’t used in 90 days, so I deserve a little ‘holiday’ from my sobriety,” and to replace it with a thought such as, “What I really deserve is to keep my sobriety streak alive, to support my recovery one day at a time, including today, and to stop trying to fool myself with drug-seeking thoughts.”
Developing and practicing a repertoire of appropriately assertive comments with which to politely turn down offers of a drink (or other substance) from someone (e.g., “Thanks, but I’ll just have a ginger ale, doctor’s orders!”).
Learning how to solve problems directly and effectively, rather than trying to drown out a problem by getting impaired, which only serves to worsen the problem.
Becoming conversant in the “pros and cons” of using alcohol and other drugs, versus the pros and cons of being sober, and being able to address distortions in thinking along the way.
Practicing the behaviors and attitudes of self-respect, including counteracting beliefs that otherwise undermine oneself and lead to helplessness and hopelessness (e.g., “I’m a bad person anyway, so I might as well mess up my life by using.”).
Utilizing healthy social support, such as 12-step fellowship (12SF) meetings, friends and family who support sobriety, and staying away from those who would undermine therapeutic goals.
Making lifestyle changes that support sobriety and self-efficacy, including having a healthy daily routine, refraining from cursing and raging, engaging in meaningful hobbies, and doing things that promote spirituality and serenity (e.g., yoga).

“The Ethical Incorporation of AI in Education: A Comprehensive Analysis and Argument”
You choose a highly-debated topic for this essay to research, analyze, and build an argument around. This can be any issue you’re interested in, but ensure it’s a topic you can handle with academic professionalism. If there is a topic in which you are so emotionally invested that you can’t keep your opinion and biases out of it, then you need to choose something else. For example, most people cannot write about abortion without committing fallacies (you should have learned about these in the last unit) or bringing their spirituality/faith into the conversation, so topics like that should be avoided. Your essay should explore your chosen stance on the issue, but it has to be an informed stance (this is what separates it from opinion–research). But remember that just because you are building an argument around your viewpoint does not mean this is a personal essay. Ranting, claims not supported through reliable research/evidence, and discriminatory/inflammatory language or harmful extremist ideology will not be permitted–each of these offenses will result in a reduced grade. This academic essay explores a particular perspective on a widely debated topic, not a social media post. Any claims must be supported through reliable, scholarly research. Also, this is not an informative essay—you must take a stance on your chosen topic. For example, suppose my topic is whether or not AI has a valuable place in the classroom. In that case, I need to argue either FOR the ethical incorporation of AI in education or AGAINST it. Essay Requirements: MLA Format; The well-developed, debatable claim that explains the topic, how the subject will be addressed, and why the topic is important/relevant to our lives; At least one quote from each source that you found for your annotated bibliography (3 quotes total); Research should be limited to less than 20% of your paper. Do not let quotes/paraphrases dominate your writing. ALL WORK MUST BE ORIGINAL. SOURCES MUST BE PROPERLY CITED AND QUOTES/PARAPHRASES PROPERLY ATTRIBUTED. Quotes must be formatted per MLA guidelines. Minimum 800 words; The MLA Works Cited page must be attached. NOT the annotated bibliography.

“The Final Argument: An Eight to Ten Page Essay on the Issue of [insert topic]”
Your first writing assignment was to submit the outline of an argument. I gave each of you quite a bit of feedback on that assignment.
Your second writing assignment was to take that first writing assignment and turn it into a three to four page essay. Again, I gave you quite a bit of feedback on that assignment.
Your third writing assignment was to evaluate the essay of another student. This was intended to 1) give you practice evaluating an argument and 2) give you even more feedback on your essay because the final goal has always been to take what you have been working on all semester and turn it into an eight to ten page argumentative essay for the final essay.
Your paper must include: an introduction to the issue and a clear issue statement, an argument that supports your position, rebuttals of arguments that support contrary positions, a final conclusion that also includes suggestions on possible actions one can take on the issue. Be sure to cite your sources and provide a works cited page. Formatting should be double-spaced, 12-point font and one inch margins. Do not put large spaces between paragraphs. Indent paragraphs. -
