Rhetorical Analysis
Required Length: 600 words
Required Sources: 1 (a YouTube video advertisement)
Style: MLA
Prompt: Locate and watch a professional video advertisement via YouTube. Then, in a short essay of 600 words or more, analyze and critique the advertisement’s use of rhetorical appeal(s).
NOTE: Do not simply praise the advertisement. I am looking for critical thought, so you must pick the video apart and comment on both its strengths and weaknesses. If the advertisement is terrible (such as the examples I listed earlier in this module), feel free to rip it to shreds.
Additional Guidelines:
Address a single video advertisement.
No, you may not use any of the advertisements I provided as examples. You must locate an ad on your own.
The advertisement must be professionally created and available on YouTube. No homemade videos.
Satirical and/or comical ads will not lend themselves well to this exercise. You have been warned.
Cite the ad (as best you can) via a Works Cited page. Make certain to include a working link to the video.
The Works Cited page should be the last page of your paper. It does not contribute to the 600 word minimum.
Do not use the “I” pronoun or make other self-references

In this assignment, you will apply your knowledge of cognition, metacognition, and critical thinking to the five assumptions related to Bloom’s taxonomy and critical thinking you chose in Module 1. With this, you will create a concept map showing how your ideas about critical thinking, cognition, and metacognition are related.

Which of your five assumptions from the Module 1 assignment have held true so far?
How have the assumptions you still hold true been confirmed or deepened?
Which assumptions have been challenged so far?
How have the assumptions been challenged?

As you approach your Project Three submission for this course, it is important to think about your strategy for making your presentation to stakeholders. Your goal is to make the decision process easier and more efficient for those stakeholders.
Review the Planning a Presentation graphic from the HBR Guide to Persuasive Presentations and think about how you will address each aspect of the presentation-development process. In your initial post, focus on the conceiving and visualizing segments and address the following:
How are you going to craft your story with your audience in mind?
How are you going to illustrate your story and stay relevant?

“Police Use of Force: A Critical Analysis of Current Criminal Procedure Laws in Canada”
• Discussion paper: the paper will be due (in electronic form) It will be a maximum of 5 typed pages.
• You decide your own topics to write on. • You are to write on any criminal procedure topic that interests you. Your paper must include reference to topics we have learned in class and should reference the law and criminal code provisions that you learned in class.
• The paper will essentially be an analysis and opinion paper on a criminal procedure based scenario. What do you think of it, how does it accord with the law as you have learned in class; do you think the decision/situation was correct? Etc.
• Pick a story in the news and write on it. This is not a case analysis, do not review one single case, for e.g. R v Mann.
For e.g. over the spring there was an arrest of a person downtown who had a weapon and the police used force which involved kicking the person. This was videotaped and received wide media coverage. If you chose such a scenario you would want to write about the police powers to arrest, where do they

come from (the criminal code sections), what is the law, did they exercise
their powers to arrest properly in your opinion? Etc. NOW BECAUSE I’VE OUTLINED THIS I WILL NOT ALLOW THIS SPECIFIC SCENARIO TO BE A TOPIC USED.
• Look to news stories, the internet. Try to restrict your topic to events in Canada, and if possible Manitoba. The Law in the USA is different than our laws, so while the USA may present some interesting topics I don’t recommend discussing them.
• Follow the outline to ensure you are addressing a topic we have covered in class.
• You must include a copy of the news story you choose, this does not count towards your 5 page limit. I have attached the notes down below. Reference to the lectures.
