English 101
Rhetorical Analysis Essay : Writing Guidelines and Information
Overview: For this essay, you will write a rhetorical analysis of one of the assigned texts. A rhetorical analysis focuses on HOW a text presents an argument. Essentially you are analyzing the choices an author makes and judging the effectiveness of those choices.
Basic Requirements:
The essay should be at least 900 words in length.
Make sure that you have a strong, argumentative thesis statement that clearly lays out what you will discuss in your paper.
Use the scholarly tone for writing a formal paper.
Support your argument with evidence from the text.
Include proper MLA in-text citations and Work(s) Cited page. Written using MLA format for a formal essay.
Note: All work submitted must be original. If you need help understanding plagiarism, please check out some of the material under content or ask me directly. You can not submit work that has previously been submitted for another class.
Texts for Rhetorical Analysis:
Choose one of the following texts from the assigned reading list:
Lewis Raven Wallace’s “The View from Somewhere” (in Chapter 33 of Let’s Talk)
B. “Toastie” Oaster, “How Place Names Impact the Way We See Landscape”
Jodi Kantor, Karen Wiese, and Grace Ashford, “The Amazon that Customers Don’t See” (in Chapter 31 of Let’s Talk)
Swift, “A Modest Proposal”
Using one of the above texts, construct an argument concerning whether or not the author is successful in presenting his/her message. To do this, the first point you must establish is what you consider the purpose of the text. (You will likely include this in your introduction) Then decide if the text is successful in presenting its message. Why or why not? What rhetorical techniques does the author use to achieve their goal? What choices does the author/speaker make in order to reach the audience.
What steps should you take?
Carefully examine the text (read, listen, or watch – depending on the text).
Determine the context (who, when, where, and why). This basic information is often presented in the introduction of your essay. Who is giving the author/speaker? Who is the audience? When is the speech given? Where is the speech given? Why is the speech given?/ What is the purpose of the text/speech ? What does the speaker/author hope to achieve?
Decide if you think the text is successful. Did the author/speaker successful achieve his or her purpose? This will be the foundation of your thesis. The success (or lack thereof) of the piece is the backbone of your argument.
Examine the CHOICES the author/speaker makes. Here are some examples of choices: Does the author use ethos? Does the author use pathos? Does the author use logos? What word choices does the author make? What examples does the author give? Then, consider the effects of these choices on the audience. This is the information that will make up the body paragraphs. How do the author’s choices contribute to the success (or failure) of the text? Make sure to find quotes/ specific evidence of these choices to use in your paper. https://nerd.wwnorton.com/nerd/228913/r/goto/cfi/238!/4?control=control-toc

Introduction
In this assessment, you will gain an understanding of the broad concepts and issues related to global health, nursing’s role, and the ways in which government-sponsored programs and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) affect how care is delivered.
The Institute of Medicine (1997, p. v) characterized the connection the United States has to global health in these words:
America has a vital and direct stake in the health of people around the globe, and that this interest derives from both America’s long and enduring tradition of humanitarian concern and compelling reasons of enlightened self-interest. Our considered involvement can serve to protect our citizens, enhance our economy, and advance U.S. interests abroad.
The health care community is recognizing that addressing health and disease issues must take place within a larger context—a global context. The health issues of developed and undeveloped countries are converging. The World Health Organization (2018) noted that the “development of a society, rich or poor, can be judged by the quality of its population’s health, how fairly health is distributed across the social spectrum, and the degree of protection provided from disadvantage as a result of ill-health” (“The Commission Calls,” para. 3).

Assessment Summary
Multiple government-funded agencies work worldwide to have a positive effect on health disparities across the globe. It is important for doctoral-prepared nurses to be aware of nongovernment funding organizations (NGOs) that are also affecting global health care issues.
NGOs originated with the formation of the United Nations in 1945. They are generally defined as nonprofit entities independent of governmental influence, although they may receive government funding. The term NGO is not typically applied to U.S.-based nonprofit organizations. Generally, the label is given to organizations operating on an international level, although some countries classify their own civil society groups as NGOs (GrantSpace, n.d.).
In this assessment, you are tasked with interviewing an individual from an NGO of interest that works in some way within the realm of public or global health. If you do not have such an organization that you are interested in, then it is acceptable to interview someone from your own organization who has a focus on public health and knowledge of working with NGOs. Remember that you should be looking for NGOs or population health considerations that are relevant to countries beyond just the United States.
Assessment Instructions
Consider a health topic of your choice and investigate what current NGOs are doing on behalf of your chosen topic. (Keep in mind that the country you focus on in this course should not be the United States.) Remember, you need to make contact with your chosen NGO, or population health professional with knowledge of NGOs, and interview them. After your interview, evaluate the NGO, paying special attention to its ability (and potential willingness) to get help with your health topic of choice. For your assessment, make sure you are addressing the following:
Differentiate public health NGOs from governmental public health organizations.
Provide a history of the selected organization.
Examine the financial health of the organization including how much money the organization has raised for the selected program.
Include current data related to money raised, money distributed, and the effect on the health initiative.
Identify countries where this organization has a presence.
Explain how stakeholders and members are selected or join the organization.
Explain the advantages public health NGOs have over government-sponsored programs.
Compare NGOs to government-sponsored programs in terms of the following:

Summarize the challenges public health NGOs have in comparison with government-sponsored programs.
Analyze the sufficiency of data available to meet the criteria that public health NGOs use to choose to get involved in a health issue.
Examine the determining criteria for this organization to get involved in a health issue.
Data used.
Scope or severity.
Degree of need.
Discuss how you would approach this agency for assistance.
Explain how your research and interviewing experiences challenged or met your assumptions about public health organizations and delivery.
What surprised (or aligned with your expectations) about public health delivery?
What surprised (or aligned with your expectations) about NGOs versus government-sponsored programs?
How has this experience affected you?
Be sure to convey purpose, in an appropriate tone and style, incorporating supporting evidence and adhering to organizational, professional, and scholarly writing standards.
Also, enter your hours spent interviewing and collecting data as practicum hours into Capella Academic Portal. Doing this is also part of your grade on this assessment.

Title: Mitigating Risks and Developing a Contingency Plan for Project Objectives
Exam Content
Project plans outline the intended course of events; however, things don’t always happen as intended. Organizations must consider risks and develop a contingency plan. This plan is typically presented to management.
Based on your prior research, identify potential risk factors for not meeting each of the project objectives. Risk mitigation is the process of understanding certain risks and threats, accepting that they exist, and taking the appropriate measures to reduce their effects in case they happen.
Develop a contingency plan for the potential risks for your project.
Create a slide presentation with detailed speaker notes and visuals in which you:
Identify the organization’s information presented in Week 1.
Explain how the SWOT analysis and market trend research relate to how you determined the project you selected.

“Exploring Charles Taylor’s Concept of Personhood and Moral Framework in ‘Self-Interpreting Animals’ and ‘Sources of the Self’” “Analyzing Taylor’s Criticisms of Frankfurt: A Closer Look at Cultural Context and External Influences”
Use this prompt to write a 10-12 page, typed,
double-spaced essay in 11 or 12 point font, and submit it as a .pdf (.hwp files are not acceptable).
Please note that I will not accept late papers, or papers submitted in any other way than through
being uploaded on LearnUs, so please make sure to complete your paper in time to submit it
properly. Part of the point is to help you work on the completeness, clarity and concision of your
writing, and so you’re likely to be penalized for going substantially under or over the length
limits. Do not simply copy and paste things from the class notes: this will be considered
plagiarism.
Your task in this paper is to explain Taylor’s picture of what it is to be a person, building on the
picture he presented in “Self-interpreting animals” by focusing on the arguments of Part I of
Sources of the Self.
First, briefly summarize Taylor’s argument that we are self-interpreting animals as he presents it
in the essay of that title. Make sure to emphasize those aspects of his picture there that you will
develop further in the remainder of your paper, so you can lay the groundwork for your
discussion of Sources of the Self. In other words, this introductory section of the essay should
flow naturally into your discussion of that book.
As you discuss Sources of the Self, you should make sure to explain: (a) what a moral framework
is; (b) the three axes of evaluation, and Taylor’s metaphor of moral space; (c) Taylor’s arguments
that our relation to the moral space we inhabit is crucial for our understanding of our own
identities (i.e., the importance of having an orientation in moral space through an understanding
of the good, of having a sense of one’s location in moral space), and why Taylor thinks such self-
understanding is essentially narrative; (d) what hypergoods are, and how they’re different from
other goods; and (e) what moral sources (a.k.a. constitutive goods) are, how they are different
from other goods, and how they are important for us; as well as (f) why Taylor thinks articulating
our understanding of the good is important for our moral lives. As you tackle (a)-(f), it would be
helpful to make liberal use of concrete examples. You may use some of Taylor’s examples, but I
encourage you to formulate your own and/or elaborate on some of Taylor’s examples in ways that
will aid in the clarity of your explanations.
Lastly, as in the midterm paper, critically evaluate Taylor’s views. Since there are many moving
parts to his arguments, for this portion of your paper to be effective, you should consider a
discrete claim or argument Taylor makes, consider possible objections to it, and possible
responses to those objections, attempting to be as careful and precise as you can.
Previous comments that needs to be avoided at all cost:
-fair exposition: made no major mistakes, shows a
grasp of the argument, but doesn’t convey it to
the reader
poor exposition: made major mistakes and/or
doesn’t show a grasp of the main line of argument
misfire: off target
-somewhat effective critique: lacks development
and/or makes minor argumentative errors
and/or does not understand what’s been
accomplished
I appreciate your efforts to create a context for the
discussion of your essay, but I think you should consider
jumping right into the material by giving a briefer
summary of what you will talk about in the rest of the
essay. Plus, it would have been helpful to explicitly and
concisely define the notion of moral responsibility.
(3) As in your introduction, you’re talking about a lot of
things that aren’t directly relevant to the specific themes
we discussed in class, and failing to address the issues
that are: rational determinism, and radical choice. You
mention radical freedom, but you fail to characterize what
is ’radical’ about it.
(4) This is all correct, but you need to say something more
specific. What is Frankfurt’s view of freedom of the will,
and why precisely does he think it’s not necessary for
responsibility? I think this would be clearer if you used
some concrete example to illustrate.
(5) You need to explain Taylor’s criticisms of Frankfurt.
(6) The observations about the importance of cultural context
are external to the particular texts we discussed.
Overall: This essay reads more like a book report than an
argumentative essay. You need to focus more on the texts we
discussed in class and the terms in which we discussed them. By
relying on external resources, you’ve ended up bringing in a lot of
issues that come from work external to the texts we read, and
bringing in this external material resulted in overly brief and often
vague considerations of the material that we did discuss. The
impulse to consult secondary resources is a sign of lack of
confidence in one’s own ability to read and reflect on a text on its
own terms. Focus more on defining terms, laying out steps in
reasoning, and illustrating ideas using concrete examples. Make
sure to read the prompt carefully and study the specific material
that was discussed in lecture. It’s clear to me that you’re capable
of doing this, given the quality of the writing. If you shift your
emphasis, you could no doubt do a lot better. In your critique, as I
suggested pick a discrete claim or argument, making sure to
identify it clearly and precisely, and think about it on your own
rather than citing critical reflections from others in a somewhat
vague and summary fashion.
I tried by best and still got B- 🙁
