  • Literature Review Subtopics for Suspension Rates at Gestalt Community Schools

As you collect literature related to your topic of study, you will organize them by looking for patterns and developing subtopics. You will organize all your literature into categories that will serve as subtopic headings within the body of your literature review. You want to make certain that each section links logically to the one before and after, and that you have divided your sections by themes or subtopics, not by reporting the work of individual theorists or researchers. This assignment should include eight or more sources used to outline the review of literature.
Please refer to the example below:

  • “Exploring the Essential Elements of Edna St. Vincent Millay’s ‘What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why’: A Literary Analysis”

“What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and
    why”
    BY EDNA ST. VINCENT MILLAY
What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,
I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
Under my head till morning; but the rain
Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh
Upon the glass and listen for reply,
And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain
For unremembered lads that not again
Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.
Thus in the winter stands the lonely tree,
Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,
Yet knows its boughs more silent than before:
I cannot say what loves have come and gone,
I only know that summer sang in me
A little while, that in me sings no more.
using 3-4 essential elements of the play to discuss it (see list below).  Some elements that you might consider: form (meter, rhyme scheme, etc)., voice, symbolism, style, tone, setting, irony, imagistic language, denotation and connotation. Not everyone will choose to discuss the same elements as it varies depending on which poem you choose. You should have 3-4 major points, so you could consider three different poetic devices and their relationship to the theme of the play. You MUST use three outside sources of literary criticism from our library’s electronic database. Try JSTOR or Literature Online. Electronic sources acceptable, but only one website. Avoid Wikipedia, ask.com, blogs, study guides of any kind, or any other open sources. See resources for this week for how to document a poem from an anthology in correct MLA format.
    Grading Criteria
    1.  The essay has a concise thesis that includes the author’s name, title of the poem, and the 3-4 literary elements of the essay.
    2.  The essay uses plenty of specific evidence from the poem and outside sources, including summary, paraphrase, and direct quotes, to support its thesis statement
    3.  The essay uses correct MLA format
    4.  The essay has an effective title
    5.  The essay fully develops at least 3-4 literary elements that analyze the poem and they are well organized
    6.  The essay is free from mechanical and technical errors, and is written in standard academic English following MLA essay formatting.
    7.  The essay uses correct poetic terms and vocabulary as discussed in the textbook/discussion area.
    8. The essay not only discusses the literary elements, but also relates them to the theme of the poem.
    9.  Essay fulfills the assignment above.

  • Outline and Citation Instructions for “Ethiopian Culture of Eating Raw Meat” Speech

The topic is about Ethiopians eating raw meat. (Why they do it, when they started, how they prepare it, etc etc) The speech needs to be about 5-7 minutes
Outline and Citation Instructions Purpose: To organize speech material into clear, discrete sections, observe a rhythm or flow to the speech on paper, and create a document that can be used for practicing/rehearsing the speech before the performance.Outlines Include the following sections for your outline as detailed below.  There are models from former students on D2L in the content section that you can compare to your own outline.  Your outline will not be identical but should look pretty similar in terms of its overall format based on the following criteria.-
A complete introduction and conclusion broken down, separated, and labeled into their basic components.  The five elements we discussed in class for intros and the four elements for conclusions should all be present.  They should be fairly detailed and may be written in paragraph form.  This is as close to the exact language you intend to use in the speech as possible.  Points will be deducted for general statements or intents that are too broad or vague.
Medium-length single sentences should be used for every point or subpoint in the body.  Paragraphs or longer sentences are only allowed if you are quoting a source found in your research or if they appear in the intro/conclusion.  Single sentences only (and no run-ons)!  In addition, make sure there is a clear subordinating structure (such as I., A., 1., a.) to distinguish main from sub points using a Roman Numeral style structure.  Bullet points or something less formal like keyword expressions will not receive points, so use a specific format of single sentences consistently from point to point.  There should also be enough details provided in the body so that there are both main points and subpoints underneath them to flesh out the speech’s content.
Transitions should be present and clearly labeled between all major points, including the introduction and body, all main points in the body, and then the body and conclusion.
References (or in-text citations) should be present in the outline (intro, body, or conclusion) where you intend to mention them in the speech.
There should be a bibliography after the conclusion written in MLA style.
-There is a blank template available on D2L under this document.  Download and use that document when drafting your own outline.  You do not need to fill in every main point or subpoint, but every part of the introduction, transitions, conclusion, and bibliography, and at least 2 – 3 main points with some subpoints should be completed.  Students who do not use the template often lose points because something is missing from their finished outline or required elements aren’t labeled correctly.  Please use the template when drafting your outline.
CitationsEach source you verbally cite in the speech assignments for this course should have the following 3 relevant pieces of information:-
The author or organization that wrote/published the material.
The book, website, or source where you found the information.
The date the information was published OR the date you accessed the information online.
-This is one way it can look, but play around with whatever rhythm sounds good to you: “According to John Que in his 1999 book “The World of Yoga…”  Or if you interview someone the same technique will apply: “According to an interview conducted with Jane Que on February 3, 2014…). If you have a source and can’t identify the author, go with “unknown author” to make sure you have that element stated as well.

Scenario – You are negotiating a transaction for your client, Shark Corporation. Parties on the other side of the deal ask you for information about the structural stability of a building, which is a significant part of the transaction.
