Please follow these instructions to get to the data for your county from the U.S. Census Bureau. Be sure to look at the data about the mean income and the cultural, ethnic, and racial groups that live in your area. This data will be explored in this week’s discussion.
Go to the U.S. Department of Commerce Census Bureau site.
Then, in the search box in the upper left, enter your state. This will populate Quick Facts about your state.

  • Media Coverage of American Foreign Policy and War: A Critical Analysis

The paper should be a minimum of 7 pages, not including a cover page.
Topic: How do the American media cover foreign policy and war? And WHY do they cover
    them in that way/those ways?
To answer this question you must do five things.
    1) Discuss the Chomsky reading (chapters 2 and 3), which provides a theoretical perspective on how the media cover events in different
    foreign countries.
    2) Discuss Entman’s cascading activation model, which is presented as a contrast to Chomsky’s hegemony model).
    3) Discuss AT LEAST ONE of the following case studies from the readings: the KAL/Iran Air case, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Libya, Iraq.
    4) Discuss AT LEAST ONE of the following readings: Graber chapter 6, 34, or 27 (on amateur journalism, censorship in war, or sanitization of war) or Haigh, “A Comparison of Embedded and Non-Embedded Print Coverage.”
    5) Read and discuss 2 newspaper articles of your choosing that deal with US foreign
policy or wars. The articles can come from national or local papers, so long as they are AMERICAN news sources.
The articles you choose must be HARD NEWS stories, NOT editorials or opinion pieces. Ask if you are not sure. Non-hard news
stories often specify “editorial” or “opinion” or “commentary.” If it says “news analysis,” it is hard news.
Some suggestions for article topics: current situation in Ukraine, US relations with China, US fight against ISIS, international climate change negotiations. At the end of the paper, include a separate bibliographical page for your newspaper articles. It should list a) the author of the article, b) title of the article, c) newspaper name, d) date of publication.
You don’t have to put course readings in the bibliography. Only put books or articles if they are something you read outside of class.
** FORMATTING: You should use margins of 1.25 on each side and on the
top and bottom. Make sure to use a 12 point font, preferably Times New Roman.
The paper must be DOUBLE SPACED and the PAGES MUST BE NUMBERED.
If you cite from an assigned course reading, please use the following format:
“The media is a propaganda machine for the government.” (Herman and
    Chomsky, p. 59).
If you cite from an outside source, use the same format and include the
source in your bibliographic page after your newspaper articles.
Below are some of my personal “pet peeves” when it comes to writing, to keep in mind when you write your paper. (I have conveyed these already on some past papers for this class). These are concerns other professors share, so it’s not just me you will be pleasing by focusing on these things.
    1. Avoid paragraphs (and sentences) that run on and on. Find “natural”
places to separate your ideas, and give the reader a break before he/she starts
another paragraph. It is hard to follow someone’s ideas when they ramble on for,
say, two pages straight with no break point. My rule of thumb is no paragraph
should be longer than one page. And as you learned in K-12, you should try to
connect the paragraphs with a transition sentence, so that you don’t just randomly
leap from discussion of one topic to discussion of a totally unrelated topic.
    2. Make sure your sentences are really sentences, not just phrases.
    3. Pay attention to use of singular versus plural; make sure your subjects and
    verbs correspond.
    4. Use spell check and grammar check, but also read over the final version
once. Some mistakes don’t show up on spell check; a word may be spelled correctly
but be the wrong word for that sentence. It doesn’t take that long to proofread your
paper once and I promise you will catch at least one error, and the final product will
    read better for your efforts.

  • Assignment Title: Identity and Storytelling in An American Mosaic

Reading SummaryRobert Wolfe edited a collection of essays titled, An American Mosaic: Prose and Poetry by Everyday Folk. This book is a collection of stories from homeless people. In the story we read, Mince lurches from one awful event to another, desperately struggling to make sense of it all. He frames these events by comparing his situation to the brutal repression of the student protests in Tiananmen Square in China in 1989 (see p. 67 paragraphs 1 & 2.) He uses this framework of repression to understand his own experience.
Discussion QuestionRead the .pdf copy of the Mince interview below and address the following question:
What project theme best explains why Mince compares his situation as a homeless person living in the United States to the repression of the protesters at Tiananmen Square in China?InstructionsRespond to the question above and refer to one of the Project #1 themes: We construct our identity by telling stories about ourselves.
Our memories are stories that make up our identity.
Popular culture tells collective stories that shape how we see ourselves.
We are multiple selves influenced by the people around us and the institutions we inhabit (home, work, school.)
We often define ourselves in relation to an “other,” someone who we see as different and/or inferior to ourselves.
In the body of your response, support your answer by referring to a specific passage from the reading in your own words (this is referred to as paraphrasing.)
Make sure to include the page and paragraph number in parentheses.
Participate in the group discussion by commenting on another response or by contributing an additional resource to the discussion.

  • Annotated Bibliography of Deviant Behavior: APA Style Format Requirements

FORMAT REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
    American Psychological Association (APA) Style
    a. Be sure to provide the COMPLETE BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION in APA STYLE, INCLUDING ELECTRONIC IDENTIFICATION (e.g., DOI or URL if appropriate)
For each entry (total of 10), include a 2-3 paragraph summary of the entry’s main points and/or your overall evaluation of the entry. The summary should be in your own words and not simply copied from the entry or some other source; each citation summary should be written in complete sentences.
ALL bibliographic entries should be from scholarly journals or book chapters (either online or hard copy). Two of the 10 entries may be taken from your textbook. NO WIKIPEDIA references at all. It is recommended that you consult electronic resources such as JSTOR, Google Scholar, and Google Books for the remaining eight entries. If an article is behind a pay site, you may still use it without reading the entire complete source. Be sure to include the complete bibliographic citation and use the available abstract for your annotation. DO NOT COPY THE ABSTRACT WORD-FOR-WORD: Paraphrase it and put it in your own words. It will be easiest for you to research and choose your entries via electronic searches, but you may also search hard copy sources in a ibrary. I do not need nor want hard copy articles of your sources, but you must supply complete bibliographic citations per a and b above.
The 10 entries should generally cover specific theories/types of deviance (i.e., the general subject area of the course). You should not turn in 10 citations on a single theory or type of deviance; with flexibility you can draw from a variety of behavior/theories. There may be some repetition of content in your choices of sources to annotate, but the purpose is to thoroughly familiarize yourself with the information in the process of answering the weekly discussion questions. It is recommended that you search for articles while reading each chapter week-by-week, and choose references that will add to your knowledge of the theories and aid in answering the discussion questions. The entries should be organized as a list alphabetized by author’s last name per APA Style. The title should read ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR. This annotated bibliography should be typed (double-spaced, one-inch margins all around) and submitted to me via Canvas no later than MONDAY, JUNE 17 by 11:55pm.
The Annotated Bibliography should be an original composition, not recycled from another class. Additionally, except as noted in 2c. above, chapters from the textbook should NOT be used as references in the bibliography. If you have any questions, PLEASE CONTACT ME.
