  • “Uncovering the Truth Behind Weight-Loss Supplements: A Case Study on Cellular Respiration and Its Impact on Weight Loss”

This case study may require you to deep a little deeper. I have added a video on cellular respiration which takes place in the mitochondria. Some extra information: one pound is roughly 3500 calories and the average adult eats about 2000 calories a day.
    Case Study #2
Cassie is desperate to lose 20 pounds that she gained during her first two years of college. She has tried adding some exercise to her routine and eating better, but she has not seen
any dramatic change in her weight. Having read so many advertisements for weight-loss supplements, she feels compelled to purchase one that claims that she can lose up to
10 pounds of fat in the first week. The product seems easy enough to use—just take it
twice a day and Cassie won’t have to restrict her diet or exercise.
    ·  What questions should Cassie be asking before she decides to take this product?
    ·  Given your knowledge of cellular respiration, would it be possible for Cassie to lose
10 pounds of fat in one week? Explain.
    ·  Are there any possible concerns Cassie should have about taking this product?

  • Addressing Disparities in STD Rates in California: A Collaborative Approach The Impact of Structural Barriers on Prenatal Care and Congenital Syphilis Prevention in Kern County, California: A Qualitative Assessment

Use current discussion post to answer question below at the bottom.
    Week 6 Discussion Post
    Hello Dr. Richardson and class,
Addressing Disparities in STD Rates in California
Infection Rates Analysis Based on CDC Atlas Plus Data
The statistics from the CDC Atlas Plus website show that STD incidence varies with age, race, and gender in California. Persons between the age of 15-24 years are the most vulnerable to STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis (CDC, 2021). Moreover, African Americans and Hispanics are especially at a greater risk of getting these infections compared to Caucasians. In addition, the analysis shows that males are more affected by some of the STDs than females, thereby showing the inequitable distribution of the diseases based on gender.
    Evidence of Disparities and Rationale
Differences in risk behaviors alone cannot explain the variations in STD rates between ethnic minorities and the LGBTQ+(CDC, 2021). Various systemic factors include discrimination, environmental issues, social status, and health issues. These populations experience challenges like the inability to afford health insurance, high levels of stigma, and a reduction in the number of culturally sensitive physicians, which reduces the likelihood of using the services to get tested and or begin treatment.
Biases and Barriers Contributing to Disparities
In California, some of the biases and barriers contributing to these disparities in care perceived statewide include racism in healthcare settings, leading to under-utilization of services based on mistrust. In addition, some socioeconomic factors include poverty and lack of education, which make preventive care and health education largely unattainable (Chan et al., 2021). The stigma attached to STDs and sexual orientation acts as a deterrence to seeking necessary medical care.
    Comparison to National Rates
Comparing STD rates in California to the overall rates in the U. S., California has higher rates of infections, especially in large metropolitan areas (CDC, 2021). This highlights the need for prevention and intervention programs, specifically dominant health campaign campaigns addressing the state’s difficulties. Measures have to be implemented to control the interaction between risk factors associated with the increased STD rates, including population density, migration, and catchment characteristics, to reduce STD spread effectively.
    Person-Centered Actions for Nurse Practitioners
To promote STD self-care management among marginalized clients, nurse practitioners can:
Enhance Education and Awareness: Culturally and competently educate clients on STD prevention, symptoms, and the need for STD testing (Healthypeople, 2020). This can be done through organizing awareness campaigns within the community and working with other organizations in direct contact with minorities.
Facilitate Access to Care: Create mobile clinics and telemedicine to provide easy access to testing and treatment to clients in remote areas without discriminating against their status.
    Opportunities for Interprofessional Collaboration
Addressing disparities in STD rates requires a collaborative approach:
Public Health Collaboration: Collaborate with public health departments to design and launch targeted prevention strategies for at-risk populations (Healthypeople, 2020). This includes awareness creation, testing fairs, and vaccination drives.
Social Services Integration: Collaborate with social services to address social factors that can affect STD rates more indirectly, such as housing, education, and employment (Healthypeople, 2020). The implication is that health can be enhanced by providing comprehensive care that addresses these elements.

    Please respond to question below:
Great discussion on STDs in your community Keileshia. You did a great job discussing STDs in your state.  Based on your discussion, do you feel that there is a higher incidence of STDs in African Americans and Hispanics; do you feel that in addition to not being able to afford insurance that education would play a part in this result?

  • “Executive Orders: Agreeing and Disagreeing with Current Policies” “Examining Executive Order 14043: A Controversial Mandate for Federal Employee Vaccinations”

I am in need of a 400 word discussion post as well as two 200 word responses.
Discussion: Pick a current Executive Order, one that you strongly agree pick another current Executive Order that you oppose. Discuss both. Be sure to include information on why you feel the way you do about the particular Executive Orders and what makes you feel the way that you do. Include the number of and the title of the Executive Orders in the heading. https://www.federalregister.gov/presidential-documents/executive-orders
Response #1 (Powell): Hello Everyone, For this weeks discussion, I have chosen Executive Order 14120 as the doctrine in which I can agree and Executive Order as the one I disagree with. Executive Order 14120 was published on behalf of the First Lady of the United States and the Biden administration as a means to counteract lackluster women-specific health research methods which, according to this Executive Order have long been in place. Many of the medical advancements that face out modern society originated around men. After having two relatives suffer from conditions such as PCOS and cervical cancers, it is tempting to believe that medical research for women is inadequate, and could a serious revision. Many doctors will emphasize their work as “practice” and this is often due to our limited understand of medicine as it pertains to absolutes and cures. With the the vast physiological differences between men and women, the need for female specific medical practice is beyond overdue, thus earning my concurrence. Executive Order 14092 was set in motion to reduce gun violence. I feel as if it is important to address this from the same administration to emphasize my neutral stance on politics. Gun violence is a significant problem in the United States, without question. Gathering analytical data to support both sides is easily accomplished. This Executive Order seeks to reinforce the Biden administrations stance on assault weapon and high capacity magazine bans. As someone who has been in law enforcement for more than 10 years now, I can confidently say that the vast majority of violence that plagues our society is not from these high capacity magazines and assault weapons, but rather, handguns. I have taken an obscene amount of these weapons from convicted felons, minors, in conjunction with narcotics, etc. and have seen first hand how this Executive Order misses the mark. After living in Europe for a period of time, I have learned that the total withdrawal of guns, does not equate to less violence. Violence will find a way if desired and sought after by someone. I disagree with the bans mentioned in this Executive Order as actions should be taken to increase punishment for those who disobey (significantly) as the repercussions, while they vary state to state, are often inadequate when seen objectively. Creating a system tailored to reducing crime rather than monetizing it should be the best temporary solution until change on a larger scale can be made. I hope you all have a great week!

Response #2 (Brian): For this discussion, I chose to write about Executive Order 14113 – one which I agree with. This Executive Order, signed by President Biden on December 26, 2023, makes an adjustment to certain rates of pay within the Government. This Executive Order is usually signed by the sitting President every year just before the end of the calendar year. This Executive Order gives pay raises to Government employees. It is designed to ensure that the salaries of Federal employees remain fair and consistent with the rate of inflation and the competitive market. One reason why I strongly agree with this order is that it is what gives the uniformed military members a pay raise every year. With the rising costs of goods and services, it is extremely difficult for many military members to make ends meet. This Executive Order, while not a complete solution, gives military members and federal employees the chance to keep up with the economy and ensure that they can afford the basics of living.
One Executive Order that I don’t necessarily agree with is Executive Order 14043. This Executive Order, signed by President Biden on September 9, 2021, made it mandatory for all federal employees to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. I do not agree with this Executive Order because I feel that it infringes upon the employee’s rights to decide what type of medical vaccine and treatment they want to receive. I don’t think that the government should have made this a mandatory requirement. At a time when people were financially suffering and there were many unknowns, people did not want to lose their jobs or face reprimand because they refused to get the vaccine. This Executive Order was later revoked through Executive Order 14099, where government employees were no longer required to receive the vaccine. While the COVID era was confusing and a learning opportunity for everyone, I strongly believe that Executive Order 14043 was unnecessary and did not allow American citizens to make choices on what to do with their own health and body.

This is the prompt and my outline as well as the sources I used cited in Chicago Format.
The purpose of this assignment is to help you pull together what you’ve learned so far from your research and to guide you to figuring the rest out. And, of course, to show me your progress. The goal here is to identify gaps in your research or progress so you can correct course or make any necessary adjustments to you question or research. Although I will grade in part for content, meaning you should be thorough in your answers and cite sources, completion counts the most. I want to see where you are in your project and where you’re headed.
Complete the following sections based on the work you’ve done and your plans for the final format of the project.
RESEARCH QUESTION—Clearly state your Research Question. Then, give me a little bit of context about what makes it historical and relevant to this course. For example, what change are you investigating? Why are the event(s) you’re researching significant in terms of the impact they had on the present or events that followed them? Or, what lessons does the event(s) or topic you’re studying offer for the present or future?
How has the Olympic Games’ commitment to Olympism and its ideals of promoting peace, mutual understanding, and fair play evolved over time across the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics?
PROJECT FORMAT—In which format will you present your research and what do you expect it to look like? For example, if you are doing a Timeline, tell me that and add details like the file format (e.g., PowerPoint, Word, Prezi). If you’re doing a Creative Project, tell me the medium and how you plan to incorporate the Historiography and other information.
I would like to do the project in the format of a timeline in powerpoint which will have a slide with all of the events I will be discovering as well as each slide dedicated to a certain date. I would also like to see if I can make it into a children’s book somehow.
DRAFT HISTORIOGRAPHY—Using your 5+ scholarly sources, identify the main themes, questions, and findings in the scholarly research on your topic. Then, describe how your research fits with this historiography (scholarly discussions related to your topic) with a particular focus on how your research draws from and will build on these sources. Think of this as your prompt: What have scholars already shown us related to your topic and how/what does your research question fit with, build on, or challenge their findings?  Insert a footnote whenever you refer to a source(s).
I decided to do my project on a topic that goes hand in hand with what we have done in this class so the main themes of my topic include politics in sports, the values of Olympism and how each host country either adheres to them or not, as well as the general relationship between the Olympics and politics and the effect they have on each other. So far I have not done extensive research, however, when I think back on what Zolov wrote in his article, he made a point that Mexico used the Olympics intentionally in a way that some people did not think was effective.1 Jennifer Parks had a similar article about the Moscow Games in 1980.2 Overall, the Olympics are an extremely powerful political tool used by many countries to this day.
PROJECT OUTLINE—Share what you’ve learned related to your research question so far and some ideas for structuring your answer. Don’t repeat what’s above, but add details. For example, you know the specific events you’re going to include in the Timeline, list those and add anything you know about what you’ll say. Add footnotes whenever you refer to a source. For a Creative Project, give me some examples of how your creative project shows your research. If you have other sections of the Research Report done, you can paste those here.
    Introduction
Define Olympism and its core ideals (peace, mutual understanding, fair play, etc.)
Thesis statement: Examine how the Olympic Games’ commitment to Olympism has evolved across different eras and global contexts.
    1936 Berlin Olympics
Historical context (rise of Nazism, racial discrimination, etc.)
Controversies and challenges to Olympic ideals (Berlin Games as a propaganda tool, exclusion of athletes based on race/ethnicity, etc.)
Efforts or instances that upheld Olympism despite the controversies
    1968 Mexico City Olympics
Historical context (civil unrest, student protests, Cold War tensions, etc.)
Challenges to Olympic ideals (Black Power salute, student massacre, political tensions, etc.)
Initiatives or moments that promoted Olympism (cultural exchange, international cooperation, etc.)
    2008 Beijing Olympics
Historical context (China’s rise as a global power, human rights concerns, etc.)
Controversies and criticisms related to Olympic values (censorship, pollution, political agenda, etc.)
Efforts to uphold Olympism (promoting diversity, environmental initiatives, etc.)
    2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics
Historical context (Brazil’s economic and political turmoil, Zika virus outbreak, etc.)
Challenges to Olympic ideals (doping scandals, security concerns, environmental issues, etc.)
Instances that exemplified Olympism (unity, sportsmanship, cultural exchange, etc.)
    Analysis and Conclusion
Comparative analysis of how Olympism was interpreted and prioritized across the four Games
Factors that influenced the adherence or departure from Olympic ideals (political agendas, societal changes, global events, etc.)
Overall evolution and future outlook for upholding Olympism in the Olympic Movement
PROGRESS REPORT—How’s your research going? Tell me what you’ve done so far and how much time you’ve been able to spend. What do you feel confident about? What are you struggling with? What questions have come up about the topic, sources, format—anything? What can I do that will be most helpful for you?
So far I have been able to find sources that cover almost all of the Games that I want to analyze in the paper. There is still a lot of work to be done, but I feel confident that I will be able to find more information and create a good timeline. Mostly, I just struggle with taking the time to find the information I need and being able to put that into writing on paper. I think a timeline format will definitely make it a little easier for me in that sense. The sources I have found so far are more about politics rather than the adherence to Olympism in the Games so I might change my question a little bit. If possible, I would like to see a sample of the project done with a timeline just to get a general idea.
