  • “Analyzing Advertisements: Uncovering Stereotypes, Examining Culture, and Exploring Social Science Perspectives” Exploring Social Science Perspectives Through Advertisements: Analyzing Assumptions, Values, and Global Issues

    Directions
Complete this project by addressing the criteria below. You will work on parts of the project in each module and receive instructor feedback. Your final submission will be revisions of the work you do throughout the course. Be sure to incorporate instructor feedback from each assignment along the way. Read these guidelines and rubric criteria closely, and reach out to your instructor if you have any questions.
    Part One: Advertisement Analysis
In this section, you will analyze the four advertisements you selected earlier in the course. Use social science approaches to gather specific information from them. As you conduct your analyses, think about what these advertisements say about the companies selling the products, the organizations making the ads, the people purchasing the products, and society as a whole.
Determine how individuals and groups are represented in the advertisements.
What audiences are the advertisements trying to reach?
What unspoken or underlying messages do you think the ads might be sending?
Identify stereotyped group behavior in the advertisements.
What are the advertisements saying about the behavior of the groups represented in them?
What underlying messages do the advertisements send about the group behaviors in them and the audiences they assume will be consuming the products?
Determine how different cultures are represented in the advertisements.
How do the ads represent culture? Are any stereotypes being used?
What unspoken or underlying messages do you think the ads might be sending about culture?
Discuss how ethical issues in the social sciencesimpact advertising. Look beyond the economic effects of advertisements and consider the following questions to help address this prompt:
Do the ads confirm biases? Do they rely on stereotypes? Do they support social change? Do they stay neutral on social or political movements? Should they get involved in social or political movements?
Why might it be important for advertisers and companies in a diverse world to be as inclusive and unbiased as possible?
    Part Two: Social Science Questions
The answers that come from an analysis can often lead to more questions. In this section, you will use the information you found from your advertisement analyses to ask a broader social science question. You do not need to answer the question, but you do need to talk about how you might study your advertisements using the skills and knowledge you’ve gained in this course.
Propose a finalized social science research question based on your analysis of the advertisements you chose.
Think beyond the minor details from your analysis and consider what the ads say about individuals, groups, institutions, or society.
What is the meaning or significance of the ads? For example, you might be interested in ethical issues related to advertising. You might want to explore how current events influence the content of ads. Or maybe you would like to ask how common themes in ads could impact an audience’s self-concept.
Discuss how you used a social science perspective to develop your research question.
Explain how you used social science concepts, perspectives, or approaches to write your research question.
Explain one major development in the social sciences that may have influenced your research question.
The major development could include an important event, a discovery, the rejection of an old theory, acceptance of a new theory, or a change in culture that affected the field.
How might these changes in thinking and research have affected the conclusions drawn about your advertisements and the questions asked about them?
    Part Three: Reflection
In this section, you will reflect on your experience using social science perspectives to analyze advertisements and ask research questions. You will consider how your personal beliefs, assumptions, and values influenced the question you developed, and explain why knowledge of the social sciences is important to understanding yourself, other people, and the world around you.
Describe how your assumptions, beliefs, and/or values influenced the way you analyzed your advertisements.
Consider how your perceptions of the social world may have influenced the way you viewed your advertisements. Did it/they cause you to make assumptions about the people in the ads? Did you focus on certain advertisements, or parts of advertisements as a result? How might someone with a different set of beliefs view your advertisements?
Discuss how social science perspectives or approaches could be used to process information.
Focus on the social science perspectives or approaches you feel would be the most beneficial for analyzing the information you are presented with every day.
For example, would analyzing ads on social media from the political science perspective help you better understand a company’s political stance on issues? What perspective would help you determine if there was a possible link between the length of a commercial and its intended audience? Would examining an ad targeted at caregivers from a sociological perspective help you understand the meaning of family in various cultures?
Explain how looking at the world from social science perspectives may impact your personal life.
How might using social science skills help you process and understand the information you use in your life?
Explain how examining issues from social science perspectives may affect your community relationships.
Think about challenges or opportunities in your community. How might applying social science perspectives to those issues benefit your community?
Discuss how being more informed about the social sciences may help you understand global contemporary issues.
Consider how understanding the ways social scientists examine human behaviors could influence the way you approach global challenges and questions.

  • “My Personal Research Journey: A Reflection on the I-Search Process”

    Paper
NON INTERNET SOURCES! For this essay, you will be doing a version of an essay usually known as the “I-Search.” This type of assignment combines research, analysis, and narrative; you will use first-person as you explain your way through the research process. Remember: not only do you get to use first-person, but for this essay you will interject yourself continually. You are writing about yourself and your personal experience with researching a specific topic. You are investigating and interacting, so this paper is as much about you as it is the sources! What’s going on in your head as you progress?
Part I, your introduction, will also introduce the reader to any knowledge, experience, or background you already have about your topic, before you start researching. What do you already know about the topic? This can include some of what you have learned from your previous essay on internet sites, but try to personalize it. What attracted you to the topic? Was there anything about your topic that touches on previous interests you have? Perhaps you’ve seen a movie that mentions the topic, or you remember as a child hearing a story about your topic. Perhaps you didn’t know much about your topic when you signed up for it, but the little you have done on the internet has deepened your interest.
Part II will detail what you want to find out about your topic. List questions you have come up with since you began looking into the topic. These are the questions that you find most interesting, that you are most curious to have answered. What are the perspectives you are looking for, and how do you want to examine them? Are you hoping to come to a firm conclusion about your topic? How difficult of a time do you anticipate having in forming a strong opinion? This section should help focus your search because you are not randomly combing through sources but seeking for specific information. Not only will these questions guide you as you research, but in all likelihood they will determine the types of sources you choose in the first place.
Part III is the search itself and will consist of a section on each source. First, how did you find the source? What kind of source is it? Report on what this source has to say about your topic, using summary, paraphrase, and quoting, but also be sure to include your opinion on the source. Do you find it persuasive? Were you skeptical when you first began reading but eventually had your mind changed? Were you excited at first by what looked to be a great source but came to disagree with it? Does your source go any way towards answering your questions? Are you satisfied with the results of this search, or do you believe you will have more research to do before your fifth paper, the final one on your topic?
Part IV will function as your conclusion and summarizes what you have learned. Reflect upon the research process and explain not only the knowledge you have gained but how your perspective may have been changed or confirmed. Think of the process as a journey, a quest for truth. How far have you come? How much farther do you need to go? Are you satisfied with the progress you’ve made, both on your topic and as a researcher?

  • “The Paradox of Choice: The Impact of Decision-Making on Mental Processing and Consumer Behavior” Title: The Decision-Making Process: Evaluating Choices and Reflecting on the Outcome

    The Paradox of Choice
Psychology teaches us that choosing, perceiving, remembering, and other cognitive activities involve complex processes that compete for limited mental resources. The human brain is an amazing thing, but even when that brain is young and working well, it can reveal its limitations. Interesting research provides some insight into how our brains manage decision-making. Do you think that making a choice puts big demands on our mental processing system? One line of research suggests that it does.
Let’s examine an experiment that was conducted at a small local grocery store by Sheena Iyengar, a graduate student at Stanford University. She set up a table for tasting jam near the front of the store. Sometimes the table had 6 types of jam; other times there were 24 types.
Iyengar and her colleagues measured two things. First, which condition—6 jams or 24 jams—was more likely to get people to stop and taste the products? And second, which condition—6 jams or 24 jams—produced more sales of the jams that were sampled?
    Details of the Study
The experiment took place in a small but popular grocery store near the Stanford University campus. A tasting booth was set up in the store on two consecutive typical weekends. Customers were invited to “come try our Wilkin and Sons jams.” Shoppers were given a $1 off coupon to purchase a jam. The jams were priced between $4 and $6, before discount.
At different times, the booth offered either 6 types of jam or 24 types of jam to try. Jam was not sold at the tasting booth. If a person wanted to buy jam, he or she had to go to the shelves, find the jam from a set of 28 flavors of the Wilkin and Sons brand, as well as other jams regularly available. In other words, purchasing one of the jams required the shoppers to make the effort to find a particular jam on the shelves, just as they would on a typical shopping day.
The two experimental conditions in this study are:
A table with 6 jars of jam to sample
A table with 24 jars of jam to sample
A total of 242 customers approached the booth when there were 24 jars on the table.
A total of 260 customers approached the booth when there were 6 jars on the table.
Which table do you think had more customers stop and taste the jam? Take a look at the results below.
60% of the 242 customers (142) stopped at the 24 jam table
40% of the 260 customers (104) stopped at the 6 jam table
More people (and a higher percentage) stopped when there were 24 jars on the table than when there were only 6 jars. This suggests that lots of choices capture our attention and draw us in. Interestingly, customers actually tasted about the same number of jams in the two conditions: usually one or two jams.
The real test in this experiment is found in the amount of jam that was sold. Which table do you think sold more jam? Take a look at the results below.
Of the customers stopping at the 24 jam table, only 3% (4 customers) used the coupon to buy jam sometime in the following week.
Of the customers stopping at the 6 jam table, 30% (34 customers) used the coupons to buy jam during the following week.
Statistically, there is a very strong difference between these two outcomes.
This result is called “the paradox of choice.” You might think that more options leads to greater likelihood that you will find something you like, and consequently you will be more likely to purchase something under those conditions. But Iyengar and Lepper found the opposite. An extensive number of items seemed to shut people down, making them far less likely to make a choice to purchase one item than when their list was very limited. Why would people buy fewer products when they were given more choices?
For this assignment you are to submit a 2 page response using essay format. First, explain the results of the experiment described above. Why do you think more choices made it more difficult to make a decision? Second, describe a time in your life when you had to make a decision and found it difficult to do so. How many choices did you have? How did you go about evaluating these choices? In the end, what decision did you come to? In hindsight, did you make the right decision? At that time, if you had more or less choices, do you think your decision would have been different? Explain.
