Write a 1400-1700 word essay where you evaluate the ways in which your subject film (s) or filmmaker(s) represent “independent” filmmaking. Focus on elements and perspectives that demonstrate how the film is NOT conventional. Certainly, some of your subjects will be “conventional” in some ways – just keep more of your focus on the way your subjects demonstrate their “independence.”
Try to cite specific examples – scenes, shots, lines of dialogue, etc. – to support your points. DO NOT write a long “synopsis” of your film or a “biography” of your subject – only refer to the plot points or historical facts that are relevant to your argument.
About the paper:
My final project will be focused on racial identities and the struggles that minorities face throughout the world. I will discuss hard truths like police brutality and discrimination. I will discuss films like “All Day and a Night” and “When They See Us”. I think films like these are important to discuss because they strive for social change and educate audiences about different social groups’ experiences, struggles, and triumphs.
Feedback:
Hone your thesis to explore how independent film provides a platform for these types of stories to be written, made, and distributed, allowing their important and authentic perspectives to be seen across the world. Additionally, adding context about what was happening in the world and in Hollywood when these films were greenlit, produced, and distributed will enhance the understanding of their significance.
In your essay, you can discuss how these films reflect the core principles of independent filmmaking, the role of indie films in challenging mainstream narratives, and the importance of diverse voices in cinema. Analyze the socio-political climate during the production and release of these films, considering how events in the world and Hollywood influenced their creation and reception. By grounding your analysis in the context of independent film and its impact on representation, you will provide a comprehensive and insightful examination of this crucial aspect of cinema.

“Challenging Biases: A Reflection on Examining the Opposing Viewpoint” “Understanding the Other Side: A Reflection on Reading Articles from Different Perspectives” Throughout history, there have always been opposing sides to every issue. Whether it’s political, social, or personal, there will always be differing opinions and beliefs. In today’s
In the assignments Your Spot in the System, Voting: Left, Right, and Center (Chapter 7), and Media and a Topic of Your Choice (Chapter 8) you examined your own political biases and began thinking about a topic you have strong feelings over. You also began using the resources Allsides.com and Gale’s Opposing Viewpoints (TC Library).
For your TERM PAPER you will build on those assignments to do an unusual type of paper. Whereas you may be used to doing research and looking at all points of view, for this paper, you are going to look at an issue you are very passionate about from the point of view opposite to your own. It is an intellectual exercise in which research, purposely looking exclusively at the “the other side” and then reflect on what it was like to do so.
You will also practice using correct MLA Formatting and Citing for this paper.
Detailed Directions/Steps:
Refer back to the topic and resource you selected for Media and a Topic of Your Choice (Chapter 8). You will need this to help you write your introduction, title, and to build your works cited.
Create a title page for you paper. This should have your name on it, the course, the date, the term, and your title. Your title include the name of your issue and indicate your political stance. An example might be something like this– Gun Control: A Liberal Considers Conservative Views. Make sure you have a title page that is separate form your paper’s text. It is my way of throwing you 5 easy points so don’t miss out. Here’s an example of what it should look like: Sample MLA Title Page.pdfDownload Sample MLA Title Page.pdf
Create a Works Cited page for your paper. It should be MLA formatted and have all of your articles alphabetized by author. It should look like this: MLA Works Cited Example.pdf Download MLA Works Cited Example.pdf Add the source you used for Media and a Topic of Your Choice (Chapter 8) to your works cited before going any further, so you don’t forget it. If you are not sure how to format your citation, please use this resource: https://www.bibliography.com/mla/mla-format-and-citations/Links to an external site.
Go to Allsides.com and/or Gale’s Opposing Viewpoints. Select 5 articles that are on the side opposing your own personal views. For example: If you are liberal, find conservative articles only. If you are against gun control, find only articles that are in favor of gun control, etc. Use 4 articles if you would like a A. If you are ok with a maximum grade of B, you can use 4 articles. If you are ok with a maximum grade of C, you may use 3 articles. Take notes on your articles and add each article to your MLA formatted Works Cited page.
Use Media and a Topic of Your Choice (Chapter 8). to write your introduction paragraph. In this introduction, you will need to introduce the reader to your topic, give an unbiased overview of the topic, and state your personal point of view on the topic. Then explain that, for the purposes of this paper, you are going to review articles form the opposite point of view only to test your biases.
Write a paragraph summarizing each of the articles you read (a paragraph per article). This is you letting the “other side” speak without interruption. Therefore, you are not doing commentary or proving analysis at this point, just summarizing and paraphrasing. Please do not use quotes. Be sure to cite your source somewhere in the text of the paragraph. Not sure how to do this? Check out this resource: https://www.bibliography.com/mla/creating-mla-in-text-citations/Links to an external site.
Now comes the best part of all– the reflection. This section should be a paragraph at minimum should reflect on what it was like for you to only look at sources that you, in theory anyway, disagree with. Please be specific in this section– this is where you can refer to certain things said in the articles (and you would again cite them in-text in this section). Do you see similarities and differences in the articles? How so? Did you learn anything new about what the “other side” thinks as it does? Have you come to any greater respect for the “other side?” I am not expecting your mind to be changed, but I do hope you learn from the exercise of letting the other side speak and actually taking the time to listen and identify any commonalities you may have with them.
Turn your paper in. -

“Developing a Personal Philosophy of Nursing: Comparing and Contrasting Definitions, Addressing Current State and Integrating with Plaza College’s Philosophy”
PHILOSOPHY OF NURSING GUIDELINES
A philosophy of nursing is a statement, sometimes written, that declares a nurse’s beliefs, values, and ethics regarding their care and
treatment of patients while they are in the nursing profession. Although the philosophy may seem solely academic and too cerebral to
be of any use, it is vital to approaching your profession in an appropriate manner. When you develop a personal philosophy of nursing,
it benefits your career and the lives of the people you provide care to and their families.
Requirements:
A formal paper, using APA format, describing the student’s values and philosophy with each of the items listed below addressed.
Creativity and reflection in presentation of ideas is encouraged. No abstract is needed. Heading and level headers are required as per
APA guidelines. The paper should be 3-4 pages, double spaced in length.
Items to be addressed in the paper:
1. Compare and contrast: ANA’s, Florence Nightingale’s and a selected theorist of your choice definitions of nursing along with
Plaza College’s Nursing School Philosophy. How do these definitions compare/contrast to your definition of nursing? What
is your definition of nursing? Has your definition evolved and how?
2. Define the current state/condition of nursing: For example, as it relates to politics, image, professional standards and the
future of nursing. Adding some workplace issues, along with ethical and legal issues that you have observed in your
preceptorship would enhance your paper.
3. Finally, what is your philosophy of nursing and how is it integrated with Plaza college philosophy of nursing? -
“The Heroic Journey of Achilles in the Trojan Cycle: An Analysis of Character Development and Themes in the Iliad and Other Classical Sources”
Choose one episode, character of aspect of the Trojan cycle that you would like to discuss. Make sure it is
a narrow and defined topic (“The Iliad” is not a good topic; but “The Shield of Achilles” is, for example).
The draft needs to be no 500-800 words and provide a good overview of your arguments. You should also
mention here at least one Classical text that you plan to discuss and quote. You should include at least
two quotes from the ancient texts in your draft. You should also here list at least two scholarly sources
that you will use. The best source to find them is the MSU library website. Choose preferably those
marked as ACADEMIC JOURNAL or ACADEMIC PERIODICAL. Each article should be at least 10
pages or so (not 1 and a half, for example). You can also use scholarly books or chapters of books, but not
textbooks, encyclopedias or compendia. They have to be full articles, not reviews of other books or
articles. WEBSITES ARE NOT ALLOWED AS SOURCES AND SHOULD NOT BE LISTED. When
you list an academic source do not provide the web address (unless the journal is published only online),
but rather provide author, date of publication, place or publication and publisher. Entries should look like
this:
Salzman-Mitchell, P. and Alvares, J. (2018). Classical Myth and Film in the New Millennium. New York:
Oxford University Press. (book)
Sharrock, A. R. (1991). “Womanufacture.” Journal of Roman Studies 81: 36-49. (article. Note that for
articles you should provide the name of the journal, volume and page numbers)
Feeney, D. E. (1990). “The Taciturnity of Aeneas.” In S. Harrison ed., Oxford Readings in Vergil’s
Aeneid. Oxford University Press: 167-190 (chapter in a book. Note that you need to give the page
numbers for that specific chapter.
-Note that titles of books and journals go in Italics. Titles of chapters or journal articles go in between
“…”
GUIDELINES FOR THE TERM PAPER
-Follow instructions for the draft of the term paper.
-The term paper should be about 1000 words.
-Make sure you incorporate the professor’s comments to your draft.
-You must include and discuss at least four quotes from the Classical texts you are working with. When
you refer to Classical sources give book and verse numbers or number of the passage in the original text
(not the page number of the translation you are using – if possible)
-You must include, refer to (in footnotes or in the text) to each of your bibliographical sources at least
once. Every time you refer to scholarly sources you must provide the page numbers from where you took
the quote.

“Critical Analysis: Examining Key Ideas and Arguments in Assigned Articles”
In addition to the exams, all students will be required to write two three-page term
papers on articles that they must read on their own. You must choose one article to read for
each paper. I want to see three pages or more of writing in each of these papers. The term
papers should be typed and double spaced, using a Times New Roman font of 12. There
should be a title page and one-inch margins should be utilized throughout the paper. Students
will be given a list of articles to choose from that will be posted in the class web page. All of
the articles in the list will be posted as PDF files in the class web page. You should be able
to open each one to look at an article. You must not use other sources to write these
papers. These papers must be submitted as Microsoft Word file attachments in the
Assignments page of the class web page by June 14th and June 21nd. I will not accept any
papers that are sent to me by e-mail. I will not accept any late assignments or extra credit
work. In regard to the term papers, students need to discuss what is the article about, what is
the author trying to argue, and what are your thoughts. I will not accept any late work. Also,
please make sure to use Microsoft Word when you type your papers. If any other word
processing program is utilized, I may not be able to open your file and grade your work.
Unless I indicate otherwise, I take off one point for each error that I see and that includes
grammar, punctuation, spelling, errors in spacing and incorrect margins. I also do not want
to see any quotes or quotations in any paper that is turned in to me. I take off two points for
each quote that I see in a paper. Also, plagiarism will not be tolerated. Anyone committing
this offense will be given an F in their paper. Any paper that you turn in to me must be
written entirely in your own words. Which means that the use of any Artificial Intelligence
(AI) will also not be tolerated. -
