  • “Combining Writing Modes: A Global Revision” “Preserving Your Originality: The Importance of a Creative Mindset”

    Instructions
This longer essay should draw on all the skills employed in previous essays. Your argument will be supported by personal reflection, descriptive narration, stylistic and/or formal innovation, close reading/analysis of a primary source, and integration of relevant secondary sources. In other words, I am asking you to combine the various writing modes that are usually associated with composition classes.
You should think of this essay as a global revision. You are required to do more than polish and correct paper three. Paper 4 will be significantly different even though it must be recognizable as a revision. As you add more source materials, you will need to rewrite sections for coherence. You may end up completely reorganizing all the material you keep.
    Some options:
You may keep the original pop culture source but change the argument.
You may retain your social issue and/or your personal component but work with different
    sources.
You may add additional primary sources that will also require a shift in your argument so that your reader is prepared for a larger argument from the outset. (I do not recommend tacking new material onto the end.)
All sources should be documented in MLA format.
This 6-7 pp. essay should allow me to assess your ability to combine close reading of a primary source, supporting evidence from personal experience as well as from at least two different kinds of secondary sources. You should have 4-5 sources overall.
    Elaboration on content
You may choose your own topic so long as you cover all of the technical and formal              elements listed above.
You may find additional inspiration in the assigned essays we will read over the next three weeks.
You will be allowed to use one of the assigned sources to serve as a primary or a secondary source.
Do not use more than one of the assigned texts because I do want to see you conducting research, finding what you need rather than simply using the materials that I’ve found for you. You are not required to use any of the assigned readings.
It is possible for someone who wrote on a television episode to choose a different episode from the same program for the new essay. Much may depend on your ability to find fresh angles in order to add more content to the longer essay. If you don’t think you can say anything new about your primary source, then, you may be shifting the focus to different episodes so long as you are still working with some of the previous content, which might be related to the social issue. Similarly, you might use different songs off the same album. Or you might use an adaptation of the same story. (For example, if a graphic novel was adapted for television, you might decide to compare/contrast specific issues with specific episodes.)
    Elaboration on source-type and documentation
I want to see at least three different types of sources being documented on your Work Cited page. Note that you are required to use 4-5 overall.
One will be the required primary (probably the one you used in essay three), then, you will have two other secondary sources that require you to consult and follow MLA guidelines provided via Canvas links. I specify two here, because you need to demonstrate an ability to document two different types of secondary sources. (If you choose an assigned essay from the textbook, you could find another source via a library database. An essay in an anthology and an essay in a database require different information in the final citation.)
The fourth and possibly the fifth source can be either primary or secondary. The primary source is the one you are analyzing (performing the original close reading of). The secondaries will be about the primary, about similar primaries, possibly in the same genre, and/or about the social issue/controversy you are using to connect your essay.
You need to maintain control over the essay, despite the number of sources. I recommend that you use your personal (reflective, descriptive) component to help you to maintain your originality.

I have attached the Ann Bib. and proposal for the research.
Once you have done the research, it’s time for the rubber to hit the road.  You will use your skills as a media and gender scholar to produce one of the following that addresses the question raised by your proposal.  Projects should demonstrate depth and breadth of research and a critical/cultural lens, as well as creativity and ingenuity.  Final projects could take the form of any of the following:
academic paper, 10 pages with full bibliography
    short film
    ‘zine
    short story
    screenplay
    public relations campaign
Or something else you would like to propose and get approval for
All written work will be turned in to the Blackboard Dropbox before class on 5/9. I expect college level writing, including full, correct citations on your bibliography. Please use TNR 12 pt font, double spaced and APA citation for all work in the course.

  • “The Controversy of Plea Bargains: A Violation of the Sixth Amendment?” My reaction to the fact that 95 percent of all criminal convictions result from plea bargains is one of concern and disappointment. While plea bargains may seem

What is your reaction to the fact that 95 percent of all criminal convictions result from plea bargains?   Do you believe this legal phenomenon is inconsistent with the Sixth Amendment’s guarantee of an accused’s right to a public and speedy trial by a jury of his/her peers?

  • “The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health: A Comprehensive Analysis”

Based on the research that you have done this semester (at a minimum, you must reference the four sources that you selected to read about your topic), submit a final paper or project about your topic.
Papers should be at least 8 pages or 1500 words. The citation page (where you list the sources used for your paper) does not count toward the minimum number of pages or words. A title page (if you choose to include one) also does not count toward the minimum number of pages. Papers should be double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font. Citations may be in any format but must contain at least the following information: the author’s name, title, publication (press or journal title), year, and pages. Students are encouraged to be creative with their final projects; consider creating a website, artwork, or other alternative methods of displaying information. The project must contain information that is equal to at least an 8-page paper. Final projects must also have a list of citations. Citations may be in any format but must contain at least the following information: the author’s name, title, publication (press or journal title), year, and pages. Citations can be incorporated into the project itself (i.e.- listed on the website or video) or a separate citation page can be uploaded to Canvas.
If you have difficulty incorporating information that is equivalent to an 8-page paper into your project itself, you should submit a short paper explaining how your project displays the information that you learned in your research along with your project. These short explanation papers would be appropriate if you, for example, created a collage, song, or poem for your final project.

  • “Project Mountain: Overcoming Challenges and Delivering Results” “Designing a Sustainable Water Purification System using Reed Bed Filtration: A Project Management Approach”

Group Project Part 3:  Market Research and Needs Assessment  Objectives:
    Brainstorm and finalize design concepts.
    Plan the design phase.
    Understand the project’s risks.
    Module 3:
    Ideation techniques.
    Planning and resource allocation.
    Deliverables:
Create a 6-10 slide Briefing PowerPoint (you will update this in future modules and could/should form the basis of your final briefing in Module Six with preliminary drawings (see attached document) and technical specifications (see attached document).
Include a summary of module one’s deliverables (scope to include budget, goal, et. al.).
Put the six-month (module) project timeline (include a simple, customized Gantt chart) on one of the slides, as well as a customized Risk Matrix for the project (see below).
Include a Risk Matrix showing the probability of risk and the impact of risk on at least six possible risks (e.g.: supply chain delay).
    Scenario:
Emma finally closes her laptop, signifying a transition from planning to actionable steps. “Now, regarding deliverables, we need to complete a Risk Matrix by Sunday midnight, and then the Lindsey Wilson Project Team will coordinate with the Engineering team to prepare a PowerPoint summarizing the prototype’s current state. These are non-negotiables; they will help us recalibrate our expectations and tactics moving forward.”
Lisa nods, acknowledging her role as Chief Engineer. “Sidd is out today and I know we’re behind. I expected to have the technical solution to the Lindsey Wilson Project Team by the end of last week, but it didn’t happen.  The focus will be on the technical setbacks we’ve had, what alternatives we’re considering, and the most feasible paths forward.  We’re still cautiously optimistic.” Emma appreciates Lisa’s straightforward approach; it’s needed during this trying time.  She hopes the Lindsey Wilson Project Team will not be too upset with her for the delay.  “Also, we are going to be over budget, $510,000 for R&D instead of $500,000.”
Ignoring Emma’s slight grimace, Tim adjusts his tie and interjects, “Please make sure that the geopolitical events in the Middle East are on the Risk Matrix.” With his legal background, his stoic face doesn’t conceal his concern but underlines the gravity of the situation.
Maria, ever pragmatic, chimes in, “I’ll continue to monitor the non-profit’s financial situation. As soon as I have something definitive, I’ll let the team know. Meanwhile, shifting budgets should also be in the Risk Matrix.”
Raj nods, “So should potential supply chain issues.”  He motions to Lisa.  “Our proof of concept testing will be in India, as it has the most modern infrastructure.  Initial components are already on the way.”
Emma leans back in her chair and surveys the room – each person absorbed in their respective challenges but bound by a common goal. “Excellent. Remember, the Risk Matrix and the PowerPoint presentation are essential for our next steps. These deliverables are more than just assignments; they’re critical tools that will inform our strategies and decisions moving forward.  Lindsey Wilson Project team, you are the ‘quarterbacks’ of this effort and I’m confident in you.”
The atmosphere is tense but energized, each member understanding that the project’s aspirations are as immense as its hurdles. Emma concludes, “We’ve got a mountain to climb to meet budget, schedule, and performance objectives, but remember, the view from the top makes it all worthwhile. So let’s buckle down and get this done.”
A chorus of agreement fills the room as everyone begins to pack up. They leave with a mixture of trepidation and resolve, but above all, a sense of purpose that reignites their commitment to the project.
******Late in the week, Lisa, the Chief Engineer comes up to you, the Lindsey Wilson Project Team, with an apology and the initial product design.  “I know it’s late, but the scope change made us rework the prototype.  Also, Sidd is now out with a broken ankle.  Football, ugh.  Anyway, here it is.  We are pretty certain that reed bed filtration systems will be the best technical solution, so please let us know what you think.”See the attached document:
Open Source Conceptual Design of a Compact Water Purification Unit Using Reed Bed Filtration.pdfLinks to an external site. Welcome to the accelerated six-module Water Purification Project!Your task is to leverage project management and system design principles to address an urgent issue – providing clean water in rural communities. Working in teams, you will research, design, and present a technology-enabled water purification system capable of producing at least 500 gallons of clean water per day per unit. With a generous budget of $1 million for 1,000 units, you’ll focus on scalability, efficiency, and sustainability.
Use your textbook and PMI.org resources to prepare your deliverables.
Your evaluation will be based on the feasibility, scalability, and quality of your deliverables, as well as your final presentation. Good luck!

  • “Understanding Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease: The Role of Neuroanatomy, Psychopharmacology, and Sensation in a Neurodegenerative Disorder” Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (CJD) is a rare and fatal neuro

    Writing the paper:
Once you have selected a neurological disorder (Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease) , it is time to start researching it! You need to use reputable sources – so Buzzfeed’s list of the top crazy brain disorders does NOT count. You need to find peer-reviewed journal articles, luckily you have access to the handy dandy online resources of the library and google scholar. Using those sources write a 3-4 page paper over your disorder. The paper MUST include: the brain region(s) or structure(s) implicated in the disorder, the supposed cause of the disorder, and finally how what you learned in this class helped you better understand this disorder. The paper should be double-spaced with 1″ margins, in 12 point font, and written using a professional and scientific tone (i.e. this should not read like something you would write for an English class or blog post).
Be sure to re-read and edit your writing! It should also be written by YOU and not artificial intelligence.
You are NOT allowed to use direct quotes, instead everything must be paraphrased and written in your own words. You do need to include citations when you are paraphrasing from your sources. These papers will be uploaded through Turnitin (on Canvas) to check for plagiarism. Please use APA format for your citations and include a references section at the end of your paper (not included in the 3-4 page requirement). You DO NOT need a title page or abstract.
    In-text Citations
    • Whenever you refer to ideas or findings that are originally from another researcher, you MUST cite your source.
    • Include the author’s LAST name and the date of publication
    • Do not include the title of the article or journal you used within text
    • Ex: Barton (2015) found cat purring reduces stress.
    • You are not allowed to directly quote your sources, you need to paraphrase instead.

  • Exploring the Role of Symbolism and Point of View in Building the Theme of Cultural Identity in Bless Me, Ultima

Analyze two literary elements in Bless Me, Ultima. Take a careful look at how Anaya builds a theme throughout his novel with the use of two literary elements.
Here is a list of literary elements: plot, character, point of view, setting, diction, imagery such as metaphor or simile, symbolism, and style. Be aware that if you take on plot you do not want to summarize the plot of the book, but rather analyze how the plot or sequence of events builds a specific theme.
In addition to using the novel, please locate two critical literary articles from the library’s database system to support your ideas. Databases that are specifically helpful for literary analysis include Jstor, Literature Criticism Online, and Literature Resource Center.
