    Purpose:  The purpose of this portion of the project is for students to complete a research project which combines historical research about a social justice issue in American history with knowledge of its current ramifications. 
    Knowledge:  Students will learn about the historical basis of a social justice issue or movement that exists in the present day.

    Through the completion of this project, students will acquire the following skills: 
    Identifying an academic vs. a non-academic source.

    Composing an original thesis as the basis of your writing assignment.

    Tasks: 
    Identify the social issue you would like to research.               
    2. Conduct background research on your issue.
    This is where you gather more information about your movement, narrow down your focus and choose  the sources that you will use for your research. 
    You must use a minimum of 5 academic sources.
    Examples of academic sources include the following:  books, academic journal articles, websites (reputable websites typical end in .org or .edu), newspaper articles, magazine articles, documentary films, and interviews. 
    As the purpose of this project is to gain experience on college-level academic research, encyclopedia articles should be avoided. 
    Under no circumstances should wiki sources be used (these are not peer reviewed)! 
    If you have questions about whether or not you have chosen an academic source, please consult with the professor. 
    3.  Compose a thesis statement.   
    Make an argument about the social movement you are researching (this should address why the movement is still relevant today).                                  
    4.    Create an outline for your essay (this does not need to be handed in—it is just a step in the writing process).
    The outline should begin with an introduction (where you will present your thesis statement).  
    The first section of your essay will discuss the historical background of the social movement you have chosen (3-4 pages). For this section, discussion should engage material dating back more than 20 years. 
    The second section of your essay will discuss current issues related to the social movement (2-3 pages). 
    For the third and final section of this project, write a conclusion reflecting on how your historical research enriched or affected your perspective on the issue you researched and/or discuss any contributions you may have been inspired to make to the address the present issue (1-1 ½  pages).

  • “The Power of Rhetoric in Selling Bad Boys Ride or Die: A Rhetorical Analysis of the Movie Trailer”

    Rhetorical Analysis Essay
    Purpose: To write an essay that conveys and supports an original claim about how rhetorical elements create meaning.
     Learning Objective: To closely examine the ways in which the rhetorical moves of a text shape information; and to construct and support an original claim based on that examination. 
    Analyze a Movie Trailer. 
    Your job is to watch the Bad Boys Ride or Die movie trailer and offer a detailed analysis of the rhetorical moves of the trailer. 
    Process:  Watch it a few times and note your initial reactions. Watch the trailer again a few times and this time closely observe the elements. The trailer relies in part on pathos; the trailer is hoping to elicit emotion in the viewer. Examine at least three rhetorical moves (music, scene editing, lighting etc.) that the trailer uses in its attempts to bring forth this emotion and how these are working. Make sure you are clear on both what the emotion is and how it is created. 
    Synthesize your findings into a thesis-driven essay that makes an argument about your chosen trailer, a message it conveys, and how it succeeds at selling the film. 
    Avoid stating the obvious. For example, statements that an action movie trailer is appealing to fans of action movies, or that a cartoon is for children, are not compelling arguments. Instead, examine how your chosen trailer appeals to varied audiences in different ways. Finally, consider this, the trailer you’ve chosen is not only trying to elicit feelings in viewers, but it is also connecting that emotion to a message. Why does this matter and how does it sell the larger film?
    Remember: your job is to analyze the trailer, not the film. The trailer’s purpose is two-fold: to convey a message and sell a film. Analyzing a whole film requires a different approach. I recommend you choose the trailer of a film you have not seen to avoid completing this assignment incorrectly.
    Audience: Your audience is someone familiar with the trailer but not familiar with the deeper meanings of the trailer. Your job is to explain to them how the trailer creates meaning and what the underlying meanings of the trailer are. 
    Format: Minimum 750 words, typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, with MLA (or APA) heading, pagination, and title.

Some stroke symptoms include sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; confusion; difficulty speaking or understanding speech; trouble seeing in one or both eyes; trouble walking; dizziness; loss of balance or coordination (Khaku et al., 2021). This exposure has a profound impact on patients and their families, often causing long-term physical, emotional, and financial challenges.
    Stroke patients can experience cognitive impairment, speech impairment, emotional instability, and partial or complete paralysis. These deficits significantly affect their autonomy and require maximum rehabilitation and assistance with daily living (Poomalai et al., 2023). There is a corresponding psychosocial burden resulting from frustration, depression, anxiety, the family burden of care, loss of income, and witnessing the suffering of a loved one because of the disease.
    In that respect, nurses play a very significant role in supporting patients post-stroke about their psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs. Education about the condition reduces fear and uncertainty. The nurses give emotional support by listening to their concerns and validating their feelings, thus providing security and understanding (Poomalai et al., 2023). Spiritual care is integrated with respect for their beliefs and values where healthcare providers give access to spiritual resources if needed.
    For instance, the “Statement on Human Flourishing” gives a holistic approach to human development, which involves physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being. A nurse can embody this by convincing a stroke victim to set realistic goals in recovering, instilling hope and motivating such a client towards recovery (Tanlaka et al., 2023). They provide an environment that enhances human flourishing, dignity, and thus, autonomy and connection. By looking at all the aspects of the well-being of a patient, nurses develop a more compassionate care experience.
    Ultimately, the residual characteristic findings of stroke significantly modify the lives of patients and their families. They introduce complex challenges, which a nurse, to a large extent, must play their role in overcoming these challenges to facilitate the psychological, emotional, and spiritual development and well-being of patients toward human flourishing.
