  • Title: “Exploring the Impact of the Civil Rights Movement on American Society: A High School History Class” Introduction: The Civil Rights Movement is a pivotal event in American history that took place between 1954 and 1968.

You are invited to teach a 50-minute class at a local high school on any major event in American history between 1914 and 1991. In a clearly organized essay
explain how you would organize the class.  How would you attempt to get students interested in the event, and what historical context would you provide?
Make sure that you do not discuss events before 1914 or after 1991.  Please keep in mind that the Cold War is an era (not an event); however, you can discuss individual events from the Cold War.
When you quote or paraphrase, you must provide citation.  Common questions about citation are clearly answered in Mary Lynn Rampolla’s A Pocket Guide To Writing In History, which is available at the library front desk.
You should avoid the passive voice whenever possible. Here is an example of passive voice: Independence was declared by the revolutionaries. Correct version: The revolutionaries declared independence.
You should avoid colloquial expressions (e.g. “the final straw”).
    You should avoid contractions (e. g. don’t, it’s, isn’t, aren’t, won’t, shouldn’t, etc.).
You should watch out for word repetition (e.g. repeatedly using “very”).
Make sure that you include page numbers.

  • Title: Descriptive and Definition Paragraphs

For this week’s homework, you will write two descriptive paragraphs and one definition paragraph.  Each paragraph should be its own separate writing.
Paragraphs 1 and 2: Write two descriptive paragraphs about a topic of your choice. Remember to be specific and descriptive. Use sensory writing (include what is experienced with your senses). You want to make the reader feel as if he/she is experiencing this with you. If you are struggling to choose a topic, consider any of the following:
    a favorite place
    a favorite meal
    a favorite pet
    a favorite person
a favorite room in your house
    a haunted house
    a huge mess
Paragraph 3: Choose a word that you can “define” without a definition, by illustrating examples in your writing of what this means. You may wish to use a thesaurus to find a lesser-used synonym. When appropriate, you may also wish to use sensory writing in this one, as well, as it may make your writing more effective at explaining to the reader the meaning of the word through examples. (You may also choose to put the dictionary definition in your writing, as the book example did; or you may choose to simply let the examples/nonexamples explain the meaning of the word to the reader, as demonstrated in the presentation.
Be sure to follow the general principles of writing paragraphs and the specific principles of writing descriptive and definition paragraphs discussed in our textbook, presentation and the resource found above.
