“The Influence of Music on the Turbulent Era of the 1960s and 1970s” “Music and the Social Movements of the 1960s: A Reflection of Change and Protest”
The Music of an Era
For this writing assignment you will select at lest 3 of the songs we played
during class from Chapters 27 and 28 on the 1960s and 1970s, then briefly write
your thoughts of them, as well as, how they appeared to influence the era in question
and those beyond. Think of these songs as primary sources that offer insight
into key events and movements of the past. Use them as a window into the
thoughts and feelings of this volatile period in American history, whose
participants were fulled by the changing events and music around them.
Your complete response should consist of at least a paragraph on each
track, that discusses its lyrics and sound, the perceived meaning or message
within the period in focus (1960 -1979), the band or singer behind the work,
and how the song came to influence those listening to it, or became symbolic of
the era. What does this song show us about the era and how does it represent
some of what we’ve seen in class?
You should begin your
essay with a brief introduction that provides a bit of background information
on the topic as well as stating your thesis, while also mentioning and
outlining what specific sources you are going to use in your analysis
to respond to the question / questions being asked. Next, work
on using each source to illustrate your argument, serving as evidence to prove
your statements and assertions. When referencing each source within your
response, be sure to also provide a basic introduction for it that analyzes its
influence within the context of our class. You will want to be sure to discuss
who the author? Who was their audience? What was the source attempting to
accomplish, and how? (use specifics) What was going on in the nation during the
era in which the source was produced that sparked its creation and how was the
source received by those it was intended for / its opposition / those
undecided? What influence did the source have on the events in focus? Be
sure to use key terms and supporting details from class and your readings to
really tie these speeches and addresses into the larger events of the era we’ve
focused on this unit. Finally, what is the lasting legacy of these ideas
or arguments on American history? After addressing the topic while also
analyzing 3 to 5 of the provided sources in your content paragraphs, be sure to close your
response with a conclusion paragraph summarizing or recapping the major points
of each source and also restate your thesis statement that addresses the
question / questions being asked.
While you
are only required to use at least 3 of the sources, be aware that all of these
sources could easily be used to provide insight and make a detailed argument on
the subject should you also choose. Be sure to make the best argument possible
knowing that many of your fellow classmates will utilize several of available
sources for this assignment and those responses using less than 5 sources
will have difficulties earning full credit. Remember you will not
necessarily just contextualize and provide background on each source, but also
use them to help analyze the controversial era in focus within that chapter and
answer the questions being asked in the paragraph above.
Your
completed response should total at least 750 to 1000 words (Although you can
certainly go longer if needed) and are due in Canvas on Monday 5/6. Formatting
for this assignment is not specific so you are welcomed to use MLA, APA, or
Chicago / Turabian, as long as basic attempts are made to cite specific
references, or at least one general citation per document used at the end of
the paragraph it is first discussed, ex: (Bob Dylan, The Times They Are a
Changin’) or (James Brown, Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m
Proud). Additional outside sources are not required and you can cite the
textbook by using the author’s last name and page number, ex: (Shi, 997). Do
not include a work cited or references page.

Title: “The Power of Volunteering: Why You Should Get Involved in Your Community”
This assignment will examine your mastery of persuasive speech delivery. You will select a persuasive topic and attempt to advocate for your topic in a 5-6 minute speech. A total of at least two outside sources are required to back-up the claims made throughout your speech. You will use Monroe’s Motivated Sequence (MMS) to structure your persuasive speech: Attention, Problem, Solution, Visualization, Action. There are several steps to this assignment.
Step One: Pick a Persuasive Speech Topic.
As soon as possible, pick a persuasive topic you would like to create your speech on. Choose your topic with your own interests and your knowledge of the audience in mind. However, you will not be allowed to pick the following persuasive topics:
Persuading the audience to stop smoking cigarettes.
Persuading the audience to not drink and drive.
Persuading the audience to adopt and not shop their pets.
Persuading the audience to not text and drive.
Persuading the audience to exercise more.
Persuading the audience to not support fast fashion.
Persuading the audience to recycle.
Persuading the audience to eat healthier.
Persuading the audience on anything political (e.g. 2nd amendment, abortion, global warming, marijuana etc.)
Step Two: Research and Collect Data for Arguments.
After choosing a persuasive topic, begin to research it and collect supporting materials to use and include in your speech. As you know, the material you include in your speech needs to be credible and recent. Therefore, find research that has been published from 2013-2024. You are required to verbally cite once in the Problem Step and once in the Solution Step. You may use the Internet, library, and journals when finding reliable data for your speech.
Step Three: Outline and Create your Speech.
While you research, you will also need to outline and construct your persuasive speech. Refer back to the MMS lecture slides for guidance. Write your outline using full sentences and paying attention to the correct MMS format and include a reference/work cited page of the sources you include in your speech. The outline will need to include the five steps of MMS: Attention, Problem, Solution, Visualization, Action. -

instructions from professor: SO, the paper! Plus quotes! Plus controlled citations! The thesis! We’re looking for a 5 paragraph essay similar to a comp 2 paper. You’re going to have an introductory paragraph ending in a thesis. The thesis needs to be a statement of your opinion, it needs to be in some detail. In other words, “a subject and then an opinion” about that subject. Probably based on one of your discussion posts, some of the ideas and opinions you developed therein. Maybe it is on Cervantes: Don Quixote since you are devoting so much time to that and energy to that book.
I will provide you two or three outside sources, e-books (e-books that you can use for secondary sources: and no others).
So this is a 5-paragraph essay. The second third and fourth paragraph are body paragraphs.
Your conclusion should start with a re-statement of your thesis and then go on to expand the scope of your thesis probably by making statements about how the work of literature has impacted your life or how you see it applying in the real world. Each paragraph should be 200 words as a goal. As a goal, however, 300 words would be better.
You are also welcome to have 4 as opposed to 3 body paragraphs if you want, that will also make your paper longer and more substantial.
Your thesis together with your topic sentences taken together should form an outline. Roman number one, a, b, c.
….Or a,b,c,d if you have 4 body paragraphs.
Citation will be standard MLA 9th edition: make parenthetical in-text citations and also a list of works cited at the end of your document to include your textbook as well as the two e-references.
please let me know if there is any questions . -
“Exploring Knightly Ideals: A Comparative Analysis of Don Quixote and Marie de France’s Works”
The goal for this project is to look at how two different kinds of texts (not the same genre, two different genres), probably from different times and places, talk about the same subject.
I’d start with deciding on one text I know I want to use (maybe something that you’ve already read for class), and then go looking through the other genres we’ve done to see if something else there contains a similar idea or theme in the content. Did you have a favorite or most interesting non-epic (remember, no epic allowed for this assignment)? Start with that and choose a key concept, theme, or idea that you think kind of makes or breaks, or otherwise really affects how you liked and understood that text. Then consider if there’s something else we’ve read that talked about the same thing that’s of a different genre.
For example, say you really enjoyed Don Quixote , which means then you should think about locating something that’s not long fiction that contains either chivalry, love, travel, friendship, satire, etc….; let’s say Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales(not assigned, but there is an excerpt from this in the textbook; Marie de France might similarly work and that was assigned), and then going on to look at how the idea of knightly leadership are handled in both. Your thesis then becomes something about how either the genres of the story collection and long fiction work to present their subjects, OR how you might learn something about the subject by looking at the two different genres.
For the two texts, use the Don Quixote and the Marie de France works that are attached.
NO PLAGIARISM or AI Use.
Please take your time with this assignment and follow all guidlines/grading criteria. Good work will deserve a large tip. -
“Critical Thinking and Latinx Studies: Applying Concepts to Address Sociopolitical Issues” “Unpacking the Intersections: Latinx Struggles for Justice and Liberation”
Critical thinking is the skill and practice that lies at the center of Latinx Studies, and other Ethnic Studies fields along with Gender and Sexuality Studies. Generations of scholars, artists, and activists have invested tremendous time and effort to develop ideas, frameworks, and theories that aid you, me, and everyone to better understand prevailing power dynamics, the inequality and violence they produce, and what is needed to build and create a new, more equitable and just reality. Unit 3 represents a brief introduction to some of these foundational ideas, themes, and topics within Latinx Studies. The concepts and ideas we have covered both help identify the various frameworks and systems that have been used to manage and control Latinx people, while others have aided in our understanding of how Latinx people have responded to and confront the dehumanizing systems that seek to exploit, harm, and at times, kill them. Why have scholars, artists, and activists invested so much energy in the development and dissemination of critical ideas? Simply put, if we do not develop critical thinking skills and grow our ability to use and generate critical concepts, we then become more easily controlled and more willing to accept dominant narratives and the social inequality they produce. In short, without critical thinking, we almost always become the agents and maintainers of White supremacy, patriarchy, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, fatphobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, and class exploitation. One of the core commitments of this course is to provide you with the tools and analytical prowess to move in this world in such a way that you can be effective contributors towards the creation of a future where everyone is truly free, safe, supported, and protected. A world where there is no longer Haves and Have-nots, but one where there is only a We and an Us. In this paper, you are being asked to APPLY two of the concepts covered this semester to an issue/problem affecting Latinx people and communities. At least one of the concepts you use in your paper must be from Unit 3, the second concept can also be from Unit 3 or any of the other units from this semester. In your paper, you must demonstrate how the concepts you are utilizing deepen our understanding of the issue/problem (i.e., how do these ideas cause us to question or reject dominant explanations and arguments concerning the issue/problem), guide and inform thinking and action we can take that eliminates the problem/issue, or both. You are free to choose any sociopolitical issue or problem. My advice to you would be to choose an issue or topic you already care about. For example, if you are passionate about climate change and environmental destruction, then you could explore and critically analyze how climate change and environmental destruction/pollution specifically affect Latinx communities (e.g., what are Latinx people’s experience with environmental racism?). Another example is if you care about labor rights and workplace safety, you could then look at what are the most pressing labor/work issues for Latinx people. Remember, you ARE NOT meant to ONLY tell me about an issue or problem affecting Latinx people and communities, you are required to demonstrate how the concepts, theories, and frameworks you learned this semester help you understand this issue better and figure out what can or needs to be done to address it. Find below the possible concepts you can use in your Paper 2; remember you must choose AT LEAST ONE from the Unit 3 list and a second concept from either Unit 3 as well or from any Unit in the course. Unit 3 Concepts: (choose AT LEAST ONE, no more than two) Assimilation The mainstream Segmented assimilation Differential inclusion Alien citizen Failed assimilation Borders Borderlands Mestiza consciousness Machismo Feminism/feminisms Latina/Chicana feminism Chicana insurgent feminism Chicana liberal feminism Chicana cultural nationalist feminism Reproductive justice Sex positivity Fat positivity Respectability politics White comfort White gaze Toxic masculinity Purity and modesty Machismo Revolution/revolutionary struggle Queer/Trans liberation Intersectional politics Transphobia and homophobia Mass incarceration Criminalization Abolition/Prison abolition Crimmigration law Data gap Unit 1 & 2 Concepts: (choose NO MORE THAN ONE, and only if you choose just 1 from Unit 3) Latinx/Latine Race/Ethnorace Latinidad White supremacy Racial formation Racial project Racial despostism Racial democracy Systemic inequality Hegemony Black-White binary Settler colonialism Latin Americanization thesis Pigmentocracy Blanqueamiento Mestizaje Tri-racial system Anti-Blackness Anti-Indigeneity Latino racial innocence One-drop rule Internalized racism Soft segregation Social distance Pan-ethnicity Latinx/e/a/o vs. Hispanic Racialization Citizenship Legally White, socially non-White Campus climate Intersectionality Aggression Microaggression Microassaults Microinvalidations Microinsults To help you develop your essay, I have included below a list of questions that will help you identify the parameters of your paper and which two ideas from the semester would be well suited for interrogating the problem/topic you have chosen. This is not an exhaustive list, so there are other questions you could ask, but these are a good place to start. Please use the following questions as guideposts for developing your paper: What problem/issue, related to the experience of Latinx people in the U.S., do you want to analyze and write about? Explain in depth what this problem is, how it specifically effects Latinx communities, and what the dominant narratives/explanations are for why this problem exists or justifies collective inaction to solve it. Does the issue/problem effect all Latinx people in the same way or to the same extent? Are segments of Latinx communities differentially impacted because of gender, sexuality, immigration status, class status, disability, body size, religion, etc.? What systems of power and subordination cause and/or contribute to the problem/issue you are focusing on? How do they cause/contribute to the problem/issue? Are there Latinx political traditions/histories that might help us understand the problem/issue better? How does Concept #1 challenge dominant or commonly held understandings of this problem/issue? How does Concept #1 point to possible solutions to this problem/issue? What wouldn’t be possible to understand about the problem/issue without Concept #1? How does Concept #2 challenge dominant or commonly held understandings of this problem/issue? How does Concept #2 point to possible solutions to this problem/issue? What wouldn’t be possible to understand about the problem/issue without Concept #2? Although you will use these questions to guide the development of your essay, it is important that your paper include an appropriate thesis statement and transition sentences that link each paragraph. You should not write paragraph responses to each of the questions and just stick them together. Remember, your thesis statement is a sentence at the beginning of your essay (though not necessarily the first sentence or even in the first paragraph) that answers the main question in a short, concise, and argumentative way; that is, your thesis takes a position/makes a claim you will explore throughout. The other questions are meant to help you tease out and develop a broad and full answer to the main question. The basic formatting requirements for the essay are as follows: Length: 5 pages maximum, 4 pages minimum Font: Times New Roman Size: 12 Margins: 1-inch margins all the way around Double-spaced lines Put your name and the date in the upper right-hand corner (this part does not need to be double- spaced) Citations should be done according to the APA style-guide The works cited list at the end of the paper, does not count towards the length requirements of the assignment

“The Role of Social Class in Contemporary Society: A Comparison of Friedrich Engels’ Ideas and the Reality of Income Inequality in the News Media”
In it you are to choose one thinker we have read at any point in the semester and highlight an aspect of the selection we have read by them, positioning it both in context with the other texts we have been reading, as well as in conversation with an item from the news media published sometime in 2022-2024. The paper should include at least two passages from the assigned text that you select to analyze in as well as a summary and a passage from the news item you have chosen put into comparison with your chosen thinker. Make clear how the thinker helps illuminate the issues raised by the current news item and how the concepts of your chosen thinker allow us to understand better what the news item exemplifies about our contemporary world. It should be an organized 4-5 page double-spaced paper with clear thesis statement and a Works Cited page.
The thinker I want you to write on is Friedrich Engels. I will send a picture of his writing from my book and you choose two passages from that text. I will also copy a link to the article I would like you to compare the text too.
