  • “The Essential Elements of a Functional Democracy: Perspectives from Schmitter and Karl, Berman, and O’Neil et al, and a Comparison with an Authoritarian Regime”

Schmitter and Karl, Berman, and O’Neil et al are very clear that we need to understand democracy in terms of what it is, rather than what we want it to be, and in terms of how it works. What are the most important elements of a functional democracy according to each text? Explain why each author highlights these elements. Finally, using one of the countries in the O’Neil et al book, show how an authoritarian regime is missing these elements.

  • “Optimizing Logistics Operations: A Case Study of Freight, Inventory, and Warehouse Management at ABC Company” Efficient Warehouse and Inventory Management: Minimizing Costs and Improving Operational Efficiency

Background: ABC Company is a medium-sized
manufacturing firm operating in the consumer electronics industry. The
company produces a range of electronic gadgets and distributes them
through various retail channels. As part of its operations, ABC Company
faces challenges in managing its logistics effectively, particularly in
terms of freight, inventory, and warehouse management.
Objective: The objective of this case study is to
analyze the combined effect of freight, inventory, and warehouse
management on the overall operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness
of ABC Company’s logistics operations. Students are tasked with making
integrated logistics decisions based on a synthetic dataset provided,
which includes data on freight costs, inventory levels, and warehousing
    expenses.
    Dataset:
Month Freight Costs ($) Inventory Costs ($) Warehousing Costs ($)
    Jan 10,000 20,000 15,000
    Feb 12,000 22,000 16,000
    Mar 11,500 21,500 15,500
    Apr 11,200 20,800 15,200

    Questions for Analysis:
    Why is Freight Management Important?
Research the open literature to identify and discuss the key reasons
why effective freight management is crucial for organizations operating
    in various industries.
Provide examples of how optimizing freight management can lead to
cost savings, improved customer satisfaction, and competitive advantage.
Why are Warehouse and Inventory Management Critical?
Explore academic and industry literature to examine the significance of warehouse and inventory management for businesses.
Discuss how efficient warehouse and inventory management practices
contribute to minimizing costs, reducing stockouts, enhancing order
fulfillment, and increasing overall operational efficiency. Focus on the
relationship between warehousing and inventory costs. DO not put the
    focus solely on inventory.
    3. Based on the data from Table 1, and knowing that you have two ways to analyze this: (a) for each 5% reduction in Transportation costs, by increasing the size of trucks, inventory grows 7% and warehousing grows 1.5%, up to 20% total possible reduction. Also, (b) for each 5% reduction in inventory costs,
by reducing the quantity to store, there is a reduction on warehousing
costs of 2%, but this relates to at an increase of 5% in transportation
costs due to more frequent transportation, up to a total reduction of
10% in inventory costs, and then it grows 10% every 5 extra points in
inventory cost reduction, up to a total of 25% in inventory cost
    reduction.
    What
would you suggest the ABC company to focus more on? Use references from
the open literature to help you answer this question.
Use infographics to show the AS-IS scenario (table values)
    Make
a small sensitivity analysis on the three components, moving the costs
down and up on each one of the three areas, i.e., Freight, Inventory and
Warehousing costs for the two cases given (a) and (b). Use infographics
too so as to show this analysis.
    RUBRIC:
Through this case study, students will gain insights into the
interconnected nature of freight, inventory, and warehouse management
and understand the importance of making integrated logistics decisions.
By analyzing the provided dataset and researching relevant literature,
students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the factors
influencing logistics operations and strategies for optimizing them to

1: You are working for a toy store during the holiday season. The hottest selling item is the Tonani Playbox 3000 game console retailing at $750. Your store has received 100 consoles and you want one, but the store policy states that employees cannot purchase hot selling toys until one week after the item has been made available to customers. Employees who violate this policy will be terminated. About three days after the consoles were put on the floor for sale, the store manager calls you into her office. She tells you that one of the consoles is missing and she believes that Harry, the games department manager who hired you, has taken it. You tell her you have no knowledge of this and leave the office. Later that day you talk to Harry who admits to taking the console before the one week waiting period. He also admits to not paying for it and asks if you could loan him the money. Harry tells you that he did not take it for himself but for his eight-year-old brother who is dying of leukemia. Harry asks that you not tell anyone that he took it. The next day the manager walks by you and Harry and says that if you hear anything about the missing console to let her know. Harry responds by telling the manager that he will tell her if he hears anything. Five days after the consoles hit the floor, they are all sold so you never get one.

2: You are the principal of Happy Dale Middle School. Two of your best teachers, Mr. Abbasi, and Ms. Chow, are newly engaged to be married and you’re invited to their wedding, which will be in one month. Since their engagement, each morning when they arrive at school, they hug in the parking lot then go teach their classes. While dropping off their children in the student drop zone, some parents have noticed other parent’s children starting to hug each other before entering the building. These parents have called for you to meet with them because they believe what they are witnessing between the children is sexual harassment. During the meeting, the parents tell you that the children have told them they are just copying what they see Mr. Abbasi and Ms. Chow do every morning. The parents state that Mr. Abbasi and Ms. Chow are encouraging children to engage in sexual promiscuity. Your school district has a strict policy against teachers dating and students engaging in public displays of affection (PDA). Teachers who are caught dating will be subject to termination and students caught engaging in PDA will be suspended for a week for each PDA violation. What do you do?

3: You are the hotel manager. Frank Farmer owns a smoke alarm company. His son, Francis, works for him as a salesperson. What Francis does is approach hotels that have smoke alarms that are past their replacement dates and tell the hotel manager that he will report the hotel if they do not buy fire alarms from him. If a manager tries to counter Francis’ “offer” by telling Francis that they will use a less expensive vendor for their fire alarms, Francis tells the manager that he will report the hotel to the city and county fire marshal who will not only assess large fines but will close the hotel immediately and until all alarms have been replaced which could take a month. Although Francis’ alarms are not the best smoke alarms on the market, they are the most expensive. Francis uses two-thirds of the money earned to pay for his college expenses and the other one-third he donates to pediatric cancer research. Francis approaches you and notifies you that your hotel’s smoke alarms are past their replacement date. What should you, the manager, do?

Philosophy is a creative discipline. Coming up with new arguments, ideas, and objections requires patience, an open-mind, and inspiration. This assignment will allow you to practice your philosophical creative expression. It will also exercise your ability to recognise philosophical issues in the world around you. When grading your work, I will be assessing the underlying conceptual content of the work, effort, execution, philosophical understanding, and originality.
If you receive a C+ or lower, I will give you the option to revise and resubmit your work. Please submit your project on time, to ensure that I can reasonably make this provision. Late work (even once revised) will be docked by one partial-letter grade per day late (e.g. B+ to B).
    Reflection
In addition to your project and discussion, I would like you to submit a brief reflection about the process of completing this assignment. Please include this reflection in the same file as your discussion. The reflection will not contribute to your discussion’s word-count, nor to your project’s final grade.
Some things you might consider: What worked well in creating this project? What worked poorly? Did I do enough initial research and reading? Did I plan my project thoroughly enough? Did I break the task down into smaller, more manageable tasks
first? Or did I just throw myself into in? Did I leave my project too late, or did I start early? Did I work after lunch when I was sleepy? Or after dinner when I was wide awake? What else was going on in my life at the time, and how might that have affected the result?
