  • “Ethical Dilemmas in Early Childhood Education: Applying Utilitarianism or Deontology to Controversial Parental Requests” Applying Ethical Theories to a Real-Life Case Study: A Reflection on Ethical Dilemmas

    TOPIC: #5 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Early Childhood Education encompasses a broad time span ranging from infancy to first or second grade.  The age ranges of children in early childhood education makes for very different ethical issues.  Many of these issues arise because of requests or concerns on the part of parents such as parents requesting their infant not have an afternoon nap to parents requesting their child stay indoors due to allergies or fear the child may be hurt.  When choosing this topic, make sure to focus on a narrow and specific issue such as indicated in these two examples.

Current Issues in the Field of Early Childhood Education

Attached is a PDF for an article (resources)
    ______________________________________________________________
For this assignment you will create a new case study based on a new set of topics and resources. You will also apply an ethical theory to the case study in ways that show how the core principles of the theory are relevant to the case study, and how someone using those principles would answer the ethical question. The Week 3 written assignment should be an essay and include the following sections with headings in bold font:
Part 1: Introduction, Case Study, Ethical Question
In this section, present an introduction to the general topic, explain the case study, identify the central moral controversy at stake, and articulate an ethical question that describes the central moral controversy at stake. This section must include one quote from one of the resources provided with the case study. To complete this section,
Choose a case study from the selection provided by your instructor in the Week 3 announcement titled “Week 3 Case Studies.”
Present a brief introduction to the case study.
    Discuss background information.
Identify the central moral controversy at stake in the case study.
Articulate an ethical question based on the central moral controversy.
This section should be around 300 words.
    Part 2: Reading Philosophy Reflection
In this section, choose one of the philosophical texts associated with your chosen ethical theory listed in the Philosophical Texts Download Philosophical Textsdocument. Copy and paste the text into this section of the paper. After applying the reading philosophy steps from the Week 1 discussion,
Explain the key ideas in the text.
Discuss how your understanding of the text evolved after multiple reads.
This section should be around 150 words (excluding the philosophical text).
Part 3: Explanation of Utilitarianism or Deontology
In this section, describe the ethical theory of utilitarianism or deontology and explain its core principles. This section must include one quote from the provided resources on the ethical theory. To complete this section,
Discuss the historical background of the ethical theory and the philosopher(s) associated with it.
Explain the core moral principle of the theory, or if there is more than one, the principle that you will focus on in applying that theory to your question.
Demonstrate how the theory and its core moral principle(s) apply to an ethical question that is different than the topic of your case study. For example, what would deontologists say about the morality of lying, and what principle would support their statement; what would utilitarians say about the morality of using animals in medical research, and what principle would support their statement?
This section should be around 350 words.
Part 4: Application of Ethical Theory
In this section, apply the core principle(s) you articulated above to the central moral controversy in the case study.
Explain how the core principle(s) of the ethical theory apply to the case study. This might include considering which facts or features of the case study lend themselves to analysis by the ethical theory.
Apply the core principles of the theory to the central moral controversy in the case study by showing how someone using the theory would answer the ethical question addressed by your case study.
This section should be around 350 words.

  • Transforming School Counseling: Addressing Attendance and Academic Challenges through Collaboration and Data-Driven Interventions Case Study A-1: Improving Daily Attendance Rate As a transformed school counselor, it is important to take a leadership position in addressing Title: Applying Counseling Theories to Support Academically Underperforming Students

The following case studies from Group A and Group B illustrate an issue or problem related to student achievement and school success.  How would you approach each of these student scenarios?
    Instructions:
Select Two (2) Case Studies to respond to, One (1)  from Group A and One (1) from Group B. Write an analysis for two of the cases demonstrating your ability to apply theory into practice and what you have learned about school counseling this semester. Make sure your paper clearly indicates which case studies you are responding to.
Your response must demonstrate your ability to think critically and analyze.   Take a position on the case selected and the student issue. Use at least four (4) citations and four (4) references for each case study to support your method and process for working with the situation presented in each case study.  Respond to the questions following each case study from a practicing school counselor’s perspective. Do not retype the questions. Use what you have learned this semester to identify the issue, and use data and resources to support your intervention.
Citations should reflect a variety of sources (textbook chapters, journal articles, websites, etc.). You must use sources in addition to your textbook.
Each case study should be answered in 3-5 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins (APA Format), and YOUR CITATIONS AND REFERENCES MUST USE APA style. References must follow each case. Therefore, your paper will consist of 6–10 pages (not including the title page, abstract, and references).  Please carefully proofread grammatical construction and spelling. Your citations and references must provide evidence of considerable personal thought and outside reading.
    CASE STUDIES A
After each case study, there are prompts to guide your response. Use the knowledge you gained this semester to examine the situation and address the issues raised.
A-1. Your school has been mandated to improve the daily attendance rate.  It has not increased in several years.  Attendance is a key component of the school report card and one of the elements by which your principal will be evaluated at the end of the year.  He/she is putting pressure on the whole staff to make it happen.
Describe how taking a leadership position on this issue fits into the role of a transformed school counselor.
What stakeholders would you collaborate with to address this issue?
What data would you collect, and how would you use the data to show accountability?
How can you use your counseling skills with students to contribute to this important initiative?
A-2. Ms. Bishop has her hands full with 25 high-energy second graders. Although she feels she has created a stimulating and challenging learning environment, at least four students have significant difficulty completing their assignments on time. Ms. Bishop thinks the difficulty is more with getting organized and staying focused rather than a possible learning disability. You offer to help her set up a positive reinforcement system, one that the whole class can benefit from.
Describe your approach and how it aligns with the role of a transformed school counselor.
What data could you collect to show that your services positively impact Ms. Bishop’s students?
Explain how you would collaborate or consult with Ms. Bishop and the other important stakeholders.
    CASE STUDIES B
B-1.   Maggie (Margarita) recently immigrated from another country. During the parent-student conference, you notice this seventh-grade student sending mixed messages. Maggie’s English language skills are excellent, as her dad was from the U.S.  Maggie verbally states her desire to succeed but is not doing anything concrete to get assignments in on time, either during class or homework assignments. Her mom talks about her procrastination, laziness, and even indifference to her schoolwork. Before Maggie moved to the U.S., she was a solid student but has had difficulty since starting at your school.
Select one counseling theory you would utilize to work with Maggie and describe how it would guide you.  What counseling techniques would you use?
How could you assist Maggie in identifying strengths and developing strategies to succeed in school?
In what ways might Maggie’s developmental level influence your work with her?
What biases or discriminations might this student face that you should take into consideration?
B-2.  Each morning, your “breakfast club” members stop by your office to touch base with you and get focused for the day. This ten-minute daily check-in seems to work well for you and these 12 academically underperforming students.  You remembered this morning that Raymond has not shown up three days in a row. You know he has attended school because you have checked the daily attendance list. When you ask the group if they have seen Raymond, one of the boys responds that he won’t come to the counseling office anymore because his friends are teasing him and giving him a hard time.  You wish the group a good day and decide to track down Raymond.  You see him hanging outside the front door with a small group of boys frequently seen in the in-school suspension room for cutting and fighting.
Select one counseling theory you would use to work with Raymond and describe how it would guide you.  What counseling techniques would you use?
How could you assist Raymond in identifying strengths and developing strategies to succeed in school?
In what ways might Raymond’s developmental level influence your work with him?
What biases or discrimination might this student face that you might need to consider?

  • “The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health and Identity: An Argumentative Synthesis”

Pick an issue affecting your future career field, your major field, your community, or anything else that interests you. Whichever option you choose, your assignment is to write an Argumentative Synthesis (a.k.a. research paper) on the issue you have chosen. In other words, you will be making an argument that presents YOUR POSITION (a.k.a. thesis) on the issue. However, you will present your argument within the context of what other people have already written about it. You will also be supporting your argument with evidence that you have found by doing library research.
    Here are the nitty-gritty requirements:
Must be at least six pages. (This does not include the Works Cited/References page, title page, or any other extra material.) Aim for 6-8. If you go over 8, that’s OK, but under 6 is not OK.
Must cite at least five high-quality sources, at least 3 of which must be scholarly, peer-reviewed sources.
Must be an argument. That means you are taking a position on something and providing evidence to support that position.
Your sources need to be making DIFFERENT arguments. There is no point in having five sources if they are all saying the same thing. Be sure that you include some sources that take a position with which you do NOT agree.
You must acknowledge and address counter-arguments to your position.
Keep all your sources. You must hand in your sources along with the research paper. (Electronic submissions are acceptable.) I will not accept the paper without your sources. Every time you cite a source, I will look it up in your source material to see if you cited it accurately.
THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS FINAL RULE. NO SOURCES = NO CREDIT.
