  • “Exploring Quantitative Research: Formulating a Research Question and Identifying Methodologies and Data Collection Tools” Title: “Impact of Health Care Setting on Data Collection Tools and Strategies for a Research Project” Introduction In any research project, the choice of data collection tools and strategies is crucial to the success of the study. These tools and strategies are

The quantitative method is the original scientific method. Quantitative research methods can be subdivided by various designs that researchers use to answer their research questions. In fact, the wording of the research question must match the methodology and may contain the words that indicate the design. Quantitative research identifies what happened, but not why it happened. It identifies causation or relationships.
The relationships in a quantitative research study are similar to those used for a qualitative design. There is still a relationship between the theory, problem, purpose and, now, the research questions, hypotheses, and design. This week, you will continue to expand your understanding of this framework by analyzing and evaluating research questions and hypotheses in quantitative studies. You will also learn about various quantitative research designs that researchers use to answer their research questions.
In addition, you will continue to analyze the interrelated elements of a research study, making the connection among theory, problem, and purpose, and research questions, hypotheses, and design.
For this assessment it is suggested that you build upon the work that you did in the Research Problem and Purpose Statements assessment.
The assessment has two distinct parts:
    Part 1: Quantitative Research Question
    Relevant Scoring Guide Criteria:
Formulate a quantitative research question and associated hypothesis.
Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and respectful of the diversity, dignity, and integrity of others and is consistent with expectations for health care professionals.
For this section, you will formulate a research question that is appropriate for a research project that will use quantitative methodologies.
Remember the HAC that you used in your Research Problem and Purpose Statements assessment. Additionally, your research question should align to the problem and purpose statements that you developed at that time.
Keep in mind that a well-written research question should be a single statement.
When examining or creating quantitative research questions, the following checklist may be useful:
    Quantitative Research Question Checklist
Does the purpose statement fit logically with the problem statement? Are there similar words, or does it seem to address a different topic?
Based on the problem statement, do the research questions align with the method and design of the study? Do questions seek to describe responses to the variables described in the study?
Do the questions include words like compare, correlate, or other words that indicate a quantitative study?
Do the questions include identification of the independent and dependent variables?
Does the hypothesis fit with the research questions?
Do the questions and hypothesis identify the participants for the research study?
Do the questions and hypothesis specify the participants and the research site?
Part 2: Quantitative Methods and Data Collection
    Relevant Scoring Guide Criteria:
Identify relevant quantitative methodologies that will support answering a research question.
Describe quantitative data collection tools or strategies that are appropriate for answering a research question.
Explain the importance of methodologically relevant data collection to a research plan as a whole.
Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and respectful of the diversity, dignity, and integrity of others and is consistent with expectations for health care professionals.
For this section, you will draw upon your readings about quantitative methods and data collection to first identify specific quantitative methodologies that will enable you to answer your research questions. You will also discuss specific quantitative data collection tools or strategies that are appropriate for this purpose. Questions to consider when looking for strategies and tools include:
What is your research question specifically trying to answer?
How does the specific HAC impact the types of tools and strategies that would work best?
How does the health care setting that the research project will be occurring in impact the types of tools and strategies that would work best?
Lastly, this section should include a review of why it is important to a potential research plan as a whole to ensure that your data collection plan is relevant to your chosen methodology.
This section should be 2–5 pages in length, depending on the level of detail required to fully present your methodologies and data collection tools and strategies.

Tip 2: Draw from other reputable sources (e.g., CDC, NIH, SAMSHA, NIOSH, FDA, etc.) to support your topic but you must choose a peer reviewed article as the main focal point.
If you need help, take a look at the “Research Self Guides” or contact the librarian for “Research Assistance” at least 1-2 weeks before the due date.
Step 3: Create a PowerPoint based on the information within the article.
Minimum of 10 slides- Include graphics, pictures, etc.
Slide 1: Student Name, Course Name, Number and Section, Date and Topic
Slide 2: Outline- A general list that summarizes what you want to say to an audience. It lets you organize your thoughts, group ideas into main points and present your material logically. Ex:
    Introduction/Background of HIV
    Disease Transmission
    Disease Stigma
    Disease Treatment
    Book and Article Summary
    Opinion of the Topic
    Disease and College Students
    References
Slide 3: Background/Introduction of the Topic
Slide 4-6: Main Points of the Article

Slide 8: Discuss your opinion of the topic and/or article
Slide 9: How does this topic apply or can apply to college students?
Slide 10: References (must include a minimum of 3)- MLA or APA format only-One reference must be the article and the other the e-book.
Step 4: Record yourself presenting the information within the PowerPoint.
Step 5: Write a 1-page double spaced summary of the article. The summary must include the following:
    Background
The summary should focus only on the article’s main ideas and important details that support those ideas. State the main ideas. Identify the most important details that support the main ideas. Summarize in your own words. Do not copy phrases or sentences unless they are being used as direct quotations.
Step 5: Upload the following files within the assignment:
    PowerPoint (Format- PPT only)
Audio file (if you did not record over the PowerPoint)
Article from the database (do not provide the link- only the PDF)
Summary of the article (word or PDF)

  • “Developing as a Writer: Building on Strengths and Overcoming Challenges in My Academic Writing Process” As a college student, writing is an integral part of my academic journey. From essays and research papers to lab reports and presentations, writing

Assignment: Write a 1000-1250 word essay in which you explain to an audience of college professors how you plan to work on your writing this semester by building on strengths and/or overcoming challenges.
Describe your current academic writing process in detail. This will be your introduction paragrapgraph. Then, focus on a specific area or feature of your current process–the argument about your current process will be your thesis. Explore the extent to which this feature of your current process improves your writing or presents a challenge: is it an area of strength on which you want to build? If so, how? Does it prevent you from writing as effectively as you want to? If so, in what ways might you change this part of your process? To answer these questions, compare your current process with the ideas or strategies discussed in at least two of our class readings: consider ideas or strategies that help explain why your writing process is effective or how you can overcome challenges in your writing
process. To write the body of your essay, you will be summarizing the readings about writing process and responding with your opinion. You may use the paragraphs you write for the discussion posts in your essay.
Note: This assignment does not assume that your writing needs improvement. It only asks you to explore ways to develop and grow as a
writer this semester. And while it is meant primarily to help you develop your academic writing, don’t hesitate to mention any non-academic writingin which you engage, such as texting or creative writing. Consider how these may be relevant to your academic writing process. As part of your final portfolio, you’ll evaluate the extent to which you achieved your hopes for growth as an academic writer.
