“Your task is to identify someone who experienced a social, political, or economic change in the twentieth century or twenty-first century interview that person about his/her/their experiences, and then write an essay that situates your interviewee’s experiences in a larger historical context. If your interviewee directly experienced a major event, such as the Depression, a war, or a major social movement you could certainly write about that. But even the lives of people who weren’t directly involved in a major historical event or movement still changed as a result of those events or movements. You could also focus on an interviewees work, and explore how their profession has changed. For instance, my dad is a retired school teacher. I could interview him about his experiences teaching for more than thirty years and write a paper about how education has changed in America.
In addition to interviewing a family member/friend, your final essay must use a minimum of THREE secondary sources, to provide the historical context that helps us make sense of your interviewee’s experiences.”
I chose to interview my Dad, who has been teaching for over 20 years, about the changes to the American education system over his time both in school and as a teacher. I have attached a document containing all of the major bullet points from our interview as well as an outline for the paper that I was going to use. You can absolutely structure the paper differently from the outline, just make sure to use the information that my father provided as a source for the writing.
