Diabetes is a long-term health condition that affects how the body converts food into energy. The main types of diabetes include Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body does not produce insulin, requiring a person to take insulin daily. Type 2 diabetes is more common and usually diagnosed later in life, in adults. It occurs when the body doesn’t use insulin effectively; oftentimes, there are no noticeable or severe symptoms. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes later in life for both the mother and the child. Effective preventive measures for diabetes include healthy eating, physical activity, and taking the recommended prescribed medications to prevent complications such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], n.d.). As stated in the article, there is no cure for diabetes, but using the proper preventive measures will help improve overall health.
Preventing heart disease involves maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which includes eating nutritious foods, engaging in regular physical activity, and avoiding smoking. A diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables and low in fats, including saturated fats and trans fats, helps prevent high cholesterol. High blood pressure is one of the most common factors for heart disease. Regular exercise, at least 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity activity per week for adults and one hour per day for children, is important (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.-b). Smoking has been identified as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (Lakier, 1992).
In conclusion, many people with diabetes are at severe risk of cardiovascular disease. It is important that people with diabetes strongly consider the risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Nutrition plays an important role in the management of diabetes and the prevention of heart disease. For individuals with diabetes, maintaining balanced blood glucose levels is crucial, and this can be achieved through a well-planned diet. Eating a variety of foods, including vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains, helps provide the necessary nutrients while controlling blood sugar levels.
