On pg. 58 in your textbook, in chapter 3, the author considers the issue of the diversity of moral views. Different cultures have different attitudes to behaviors such as cannibalism, sexuality, and war. Typically, the diversity of moral views leads to a form of relativism, which reduces moral views to the perspective of a culture or individual. But, the moral objectivist, who believes in universal or absolute moral values, can still believe in universal values, in spite of the diversity of moral views. Explain how, first, (1) a seemingly moral disagreement may actually be a factual disagreement (see the discussion about CO2 emissions). Then, (2) address the point that disagreement about ethical views does not necessarily mean there is no exact and correct answer to ethical questions (see the example about George Washington’s death).
