Title: Assessment Tools for Monitoring Literacy Skills in Content Area Instruction

Requires Lopeswrite
Assessment Description
It is important for content area teachers to consider students’ literacy levels as part of instructional planning and assessment. A student who is struggling to demonstrate mastery in content area subjects may be experiencing challenges because of literacy skills deficits. For example, a student may be able to solve a geometry proof successfully but may not be able to justify the answer in writing due to difficulties with literacy skills. Having knowledge of how to use various literacy assessment tools to assess literacy skills in the content area helps teachers develop intervention and support strategies. Using research-based assessments and tracking tools, teachers can establish methods to accurately track student progress to make informed instructional decisions and determine how to best meet the needs of each student.
Part 1: Reading Assessment Tools
Using the topic Resources and your own research, complete the “Reading Assessment Tools” matrix as directed.
Part 2: Student Assessment Tracking Form
Develop a literacy assessment data tracking form that you can use in your classroom to monitor student progress. The form should include the following:
Content areas
Grade levels
Names of at least three literacy assessments that will be used, including one online tool
Data to be recorded for each student’s literacy assessment results
Explanation of each assessment’s data scale and how you (the content area teacher) will know if a student is making progress based upon that data
Submit the “Reading Assessment Tools” matrix and the tracking form you created.
Support the matrix with 3-5 scholarly resources.
