My topic is Jackson Heights Queens VS North Williamsburg Brooklyn.
EXAMPLE: Jackson Heights being the citys most diverse neighborhood and North Williamsburg being the most gentrified neighborhood. They are a bridge apart but a world away. In Queens you can find migrants waiting in line outside of a food pantry and in Brooklyn, brunchgoers wait in line for a white chef to cook up Asian cuisine.
Begin to gather historical and statistical data on the neighborhood. Some considerations might include: when did a particular group begin arriving in NYC? According to the last census, what is the population of this group in NYC? What religion do the majority of people practice? What occupation(s), if any, are more prominent than others? Finally, begin to formulate the problem or question under consideration.
In doing the fieldwork you should identify and interview no less than two people from whom you can get information about the community or the ethnic group. Take into consideration how these people have been influenced by the theories of emigration, immigration, assimilation, urbanism, etc. that we have discussed in class. Digital recording would be the most practical means of recording this series of interviews. Failing that, detailed field notes can be submitted with your final research paper. (Ongoing research)
