Please answer the following question (30 points). You will probably need about 3 pages.
1. Think of the recurrent themes we discussed early in the class
The Nature of Change (stages/qualitative versus continuous/quantitative change)
Nature versus nurture*
Active versus passive development
Normal versus atypical development
Culture and context
Briefly define and describe the themes. Additionally, take one of the topic areas we discussed (e.g. language, temperament, emotions, etc.) and discuss how these themes influence our understanding of infant development in that one area. Use the same area for the entire question.
Please answer TWO out of the following questions (15 points each). You will probably need about 2 pages per question.
2. Preterm babies suffer from a variety of challenges as a result of being born too early. Discuss two challenges that preterm babies face and describe the consequences of these challenges to development and outcome.
3. We know that vision is an important sense that helps integrate various systems. Discuss why this is the case. Also, discuss how vision might impact one of the areas of development (e.g. motor development, emotional development) we discussed this semester *
4. Piaget believed that circular reactions were the means by which infants began to acquire knowledge about the environment. Why is motor development important for this? Discuss the difference between primary, secondary and tertiary circular reactions. Make sure you include examples of each that are different than the examples used in the text or lecture.
5. There are many links between motor development and functioning in different areas. Define motor development, and discuss how motor development impacts functioning in two different areas of infant development.*
6. There are many links between theory of mind and functioning in different areas. Define theory of mind, and discuss how the development of theory of mind impacts functioning in two different areas of infant development.*
7. Discuss the primary function of attachment in young infants and briefly define and describe the three primary attachment styles. Discuss the infant and parental contributions to infant attachment style.
8. Perception is an area of study that is often used to illustrate concepts and answer questions about the relative proportion of nature and nurture in development. Using one area of perception (e.g. vision, taste), describe what the issues with respect to nature and nurture are (i.e. What does nature bring to the table? What is the influence of socialization/environment on this?).*
* = must not be on the same topic
